Bro,

For this model, it does not come with a DVD player nor a Blue-ray player.

If you already have a PS3 and would want sound system for gaming and Blue-ray movies, I would recommend this. (If you don't have a PS3 but want one, there is a package price for both items).

If you already have a DVD player that has an HDMI output, then I would recommend this. If you only want to play DVD's and don't care about PS3 or Blue-ray, then buy a model that comes with a DVD player.

If you want to watch DVD and Blue-rays but don't care about PS3, then buy the model that comes with the blue-ray player.

Looks okay then. Dune got HDMI and Wii is using Analog right? (not too sure).

Sony shops I don't see them stocking on this unit. I think maybe need to order. But it is in their latest Sony Time catalog for RM1999.

honestly, if you're getting this you gonna need to either spend 2k for a 3D blu ray player or a PS3 Slim because I don't think model will be priced below RM3k... but it would be a nice match for the PS3 Slim...

From what I understand, If you have a PS3 or any other source which can decode DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD, this unit will be able to take the decoded input from PS3 and output the uncompressed sound.

this HT system doesnt comes with a BD player but you can purchase any BD player and hook em up.

you will get Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD.

example :

The BDP-S370 (BD player) supports both internal decoding and bitstream output of enhanced audio codecs, including Dolby® TrueHD and dts®-HD Master Audio11. These HD audio formats deliver lossless surround sound with up to 7.1 channels of discrete audio for uncompromised sound.

sorry, im not familiar with this dune prime 3.0

to summarize :

PS3 > LPCM > HT-SF470
BD Player > LPCM/Dolby TrueHD/DTS HD > HT-SF470

tested this set again...

using PS3+HT-SF470....this HT system can receive LCPM only. but still able to play Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD (as LPCM)

PS3 will decode them into LPCM > HT-SF470

hope this info can help other potential buyers outthere

i guess u dont really READ.... wink.gif

it has been stated many many times...

the AV receiver will receive LPCM. you will need a player (PS3/bluray player) to decode Dobly TrueHD and DTS HD into LPCM (HD AUDIO)

ok here goes my review...nothing great but if any questions do ask and ill reply...

Installation time :-

45 minutes to 1 hour as setting up the speakers is a real pain, everything else is just plug and play (color coded).
Rear speaker wires are long which helps in hiding the cables.

Room size: Roughly half a badminton court and open corridor.

Setup: PS3 to HT-SF470 to TV (Panny 50 inch Plasma)

Testing material: Avatar BluRay

Audio Feedback :-

Confirmed HD is only via LPCM. The amp itself does not decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD. Avatar's audio playback was simply amazing. With medium audio levels (25 to 32) I was able to hear clearly and loud. The front speaker manages speech nicely without any sound distortion. Even after pumping to max volume (40). Bass in my opinion is adequate. Would not say its powerful but it gives enough punch as expected from 160 odd watts. The auto calibration tool is very simple to use and without fuss.

Am still waiting on my B.yond installation before I can test regular TV usage. Unable to test via Astro as I don't have optical audio cable or does my TV support ARC and since am going to B.yond won't be getting. Will update once B.yond finally gets installed. God only knows when. cry.gif

Also need to test playing games on my PS3. Was busy yesterday so haven't had the chance. Will try and provide feedback soon.

thats all folks...

cheers... thumbup.gif

Thank bro for your review. Will get one once i move to my new condo...

QUOTE(sbd18 @ Jun 15 2010, 12:13 AM)
ok here goes my review...nothing great but if any questions do ask and ill reply...

Will try and provide feedback soon.

thats all folks...

cheers... thumbup.gif

finally setup my HT-SF470 biggrin.gif

Installation : Look complex at first, as u go on and read the Setup Guide/Manual, its pretty straight forward. Wires plug and play to receiver. The only tedious thing is unpacking the stuff tongue.gif and setting up the Speakers with the Stands (need screws, etc)

Sound/Bass : Pretty decent, no complains so far.

Receive : LPCM HD Audio, Dolby and DTS.

Still going through the manual and playing with the settings...smile.gif

Interested in this set. Just wondering can the speakers be detached from the stand and wall-mounted? Doss this set comes with wall mounting kit? Thanks.
*
QUOTE(sbd18 @ Jun 15 2010, 12:19 PM)
yes can be mounted via screws or hooks...

no kit included...
*
hi guys, some updates here biggrin.gif

mounted my rear surround speakers on the wall...

its pretty easy,

1. just get 4 screws (with rounded head and compatible size)
2. knock them on the wall (check your user manual for info)
3. hang the speakers

attached some pics here

Sony HT-SF2300 that u see in www.sony.com.my website is 2-3 years ago model.
HT-SF470 is the latest one, just release last month.
The upgrades are:
- 3D Pass-Through
- Audio Return Channel
- Wireless S-AIR ready

design and firmware also better.

just compare http://www.sony.com.my/product/ht-sf2300 and http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores...#specifications

ok william42... when will ur condo be ready? happy.gif

linking.. is using BRAVIA SYNC and VIERA LINK.
it's actually HDMI-CEC, see this link => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#CEC

every brand just rename this thing... but certain function might be proprietary and can only be used when linking with same brand items...
eg: Sony BRAVIA + Sony PS3 Slim ... the new 2010 Sony BRAVIA LCD TV can now access the the menu of PS3 (TRIANGLE button) ... others i think can only access (O and X buttons) ... smile.gif

*
3D Pass-Through = ability to allow Blu-ray Player with 3D movie to pass through Home Theatre System (HTS) to TV via HDMI cable

Audio Return Channel = allow TV to return audio sound back to HTS via HDMI cable (conventionally u need to use composite cable or optical cable to output TV audio back to HTS for sound... so with this ARC, u can use Sony BRAVIA's Theatre mode with just one HDMI cable from TV to HTS. so now this HDMI cable has audio traveling both ways -> HTS to TV and TV to HTS .. cool right? happy.gif

but when i set up my ps3, i change the sound setting in ps3 to HDMI and choose auto but it detects only LPCM 2ch. this does not allow surround. weird.

but if i set to manual and select everything, then it works.

can anyone help me with which settings to choose in ps3?

when u choose AUTO, it suppose to detect all possible audios (which includes DD, DTS, LPCM 2.1, LPCM 5.1, LPCM 7.1, etc)

anyway, here's my settings on PS3 :

VIDEO SETTINGS :
-Audio Output Format (HDMI) - LPCM

AUDIO SETTINGS :
-HDMI > Auto

when u set this settings on PS3, make sure your HT-SF470 receiver is ON...

Hi guys, I am about to purchase this set. Just wanna confirm the speaker wiring. The connectors on the back side of the speakers are just the normal 2 wire positive and negative right? I have concealed wires for the surround speakers all ready done up and it's the 2 wire type. Just wanna confirm that the speakers connectors are not any kind of proprietary type. Also, has anyone tried hooking up this system with PS3 and WDTV Live?? Confirmed it can decode DTS over HDMI for PS3??

Hi, thanks for your reply. You mean the included speaker cables are proprietary type? Whereby the end connecting to the receiver is a proprietary plug connector and the end connecting to the speakers is the 2 wire positive negative type? Let me try downloading the soft copy user manual and see. If it is proprietary then I need to re-consider getting the pioneer HTP-819SW instead which will cost me RM3.3k. Thought the HT-SF470 would be a cheaper alternative for me.

yes correct to both of your questions...

if u have the money i would go for HTP-819SW...i was thinking of that as well but wanted a cheaper alternative...i heard u can get it around RM3k at desa home theater but haven't confirmed it myself...with HTP-819SW u can confirm TrueHD decoding without any issues...

I know. HTP-819SW was my choice until I bumped into this thread and saw the specs for the SF470. I am from Penang, hence can only shop around Penang. The cheapest price I found for HTP-819SW was RM3299. Very pricey if comparing it to the SF470. Oh well, guess I'll have to shop around some more or maybe postpone my HT setup purchase. But thanks for your responses bro sbd18.

so high the volume settings? shocking.gif i am using SF2300 normally only set to 18 when playing BD and my wife already complaining. i see that this model is upgrade from SF2300, this should be a decent option for those who looking for low budget HT.

on separate note, since it doesn't decode DTSHDMA and DTHD, you can set it to LPCM together with PS3/BDP to get HD audio.

if u have the money i would go for HTP-819SW...i was thinking of that as well but wanted a cheaper alternative...i heard u can get it around RM3k at desa home theater but haven't confirmed it myself...with HTP-819SW u can confirm TrueHD decoding without any issues...

cheers...

Hi bro sdb18, I took the plunge and bought the SF470 anyway. Best Denki in Penang gave me a very good price for it. Got too tempted. Haha. But the only problem is they don't have stock and need to order. So, I am still waiting for my set to be delivered.

As for the proprietary connector problem, I figured I can just twist the included speaker cables with my concealed cables together and maybe insulate them using the black tape, and then connect the other end of my concealed cables to the surround speakers. Connectivity shouldn't be a problem I hope. Very eager to test it with my PS3 via HDMI and also my WDTV Live via toslink.

A quick update. Setup my set on Thursday after Best Denki sent it over. Plugged in my PS3 and tried GOW3 on it. Fantastic!!!! Then plugged in WDTV, no surround sound. I believe the WDTV Live can only passthru the DTS signal via HDMI and cannot decode it into LPCM prior sending it into the receiver. Tried it several times and still no surround. My cousin has his 1st Gen WDTV connected via toslink to his Pioneer AVR 818 and according to him it's the only way to get DTS surround. His AVR can only passthru the signal as well.

Now waiting for my condo to be ready and then I will mount up my plasma along with the front speakers and front speaker. This set is really a value for money set with 3 HDMI in and 2 optical in. No regrets over purchasing it. Just bought a 1.5m elcheapo toslink cable for RM15 in my hometown. Hopefully it works.

Added on July 12, 2010, 2:35 amLatest update guys. Just discovered that this set "does" decode DTS over HDMI. Don't even need an optical cable in this case. Tried this with the WDTV Live (need to enable the digital audio output in the settings) and it will decode DTS via HDMI. Wasted my RM15 for the 1.5m optical cable. Haha...

Is the price for ht-sf470 still selling 1999 ? I saw there is promotion in Sony selling this set of HtiB + PS3 for 2999. Was wondering is it worth it ?

If you haven't got a PS3 and plan on getting one, then the package for RM2,999 is definitely worth it. Otherwise, try asking around at other shops rather than Sony Centers e.g Best Denki because they'll give you a small discount.

Why use coaxial to connect to the HTib when you can have HDMI for Astro HD ?

It is my understanding that 5.1 sound does not go through hdmi, that's what the digital coax connector is for. The astro HD setup guide also recommends connecting audio to HT receiver via digital coax.

Also, to get 5.1 sound on PS3 I should connect audio separately via digital optical, this is my understanding........sorry, newbie here. Appreciate any HT experts' clarification. Thanks!

HDMI does carry 5.1 even 7.1, it carries both image and sound.

Time to wake up this sleepy topic.

I browse around, and find this topic, and read with utmost interest. Previously using ad-hoc solutions as my HT needs (Astro + AC Ryan connected to Creative DDTS-100 decorder output to Creative Gigawords 550 5.1 speakers) until the rear speaker starts making popping sounds (the infamous gigaworks problem).

I pm'ed bro sbd18 asked him few questions and his personal opions about this HTB. Convinced by his words, I reach out bro aaronwee, and he gives me good price, together with TDM-BT1 bluetooth digital media port attachment. Make order through him, and collect the whole things from him at cyberjaya last monday (great seller tho! really recommend him if you are looking to buy any sony products. he will immediately register you with online warranty during COD. thumbs up!).

That monday night I spend nearly three hours dismantling my current setup, unboxing, installing and testing the whole things. My cable clutters and power plugs drastically reduced, manual is well documented, and overall experience was butterly smooth. Configuring back my Harmony 880 remote, and all things are ready to entertain me.

My verdict? Much better sound reproduction (albiet a bit boomy, but can toned down) that my existing setup, and correctly decode all Dolby and DTS sounds coming in from my AC Ryan. Bluetooth playback from my Macbook Pro and Iphone also very good.

A great affordable HTB, and can't go wrong with it if you are looking for a good 5.1 system. As for me I don't have any MKV's with HD audio, and my LCD is only 32' size, so I think this box suits my needs well. Plus this box support 3D passthrough, so its a bit future proof if i decide to upgrade my tv later.

u will have to check with Sony Styles or Sony Centers.

they might not carry this model anymore unless they keep old stock.

anyway, there's a new line of HTIB from Sony, ranging RM1.5-2k.

Hey guys / sifus,

I have these devices at disposal:-

(i) HDTV - Sony KLV-55EX500
(ii) PS3 - 320GB
(iii)Astro B-Yond Box
(iv)WDTV Live Hub

So if..let say I buy this Sony HT-SF470, will it solve my problem of getting 5.1 surround sound? From what I understand...there is no need for digital coax or toslink, right? Just thru HDMI...will achieve full surround...

What will the connection look like?

And, is there any price update on this model?

Thanks in advance for all replies......

Cheers..

yes, there's 3in / 1out HDMI for HT-Sf470, you can connect multiple devices to this receiver. besides that, there's composite, component and optical input.

i saw this HT system bundled with Sony PS3 package (Hari Raya brochure), not sure whether they still sell "standalone" for this model...u can ask them smile.gif

retail price is RM1999...i guess now should be cheaper

sorry.. i just wondering, why u're asking about audio return channel (arc) for a tv? only 1 hdmi cable need to be connected from receiver to tv. there rest are at receiver. so it's all depend on the receiver capability.. no need to bother about the tv because audio and video signal everything is sent by the receiver..

oic...so it doesn't matter what kind of TV to be used with Sony HT-SF470...as long as it has HDMI port right?

Atih007, can you verify the connection type for my case, if I were to buy HT-SF470:

(i) HDTV<--------HDMI (Out)-----HT-SF470
(ii) PS3 (320GB)--------HDMI (In)-----> HT-SF470
(iii)Astro B-Yond Box--------HDMI (In)-----> HT-SF470
(iv)WDTV Live Hub--------HDMI (In)-----> HT-SF470

The connections above would make it possible to achieve surround sound, right? I mean all sounds would go out thru HT-SF470

Thanks in advance....
