would like to ask, for the PS3, do we need the Sims 3 to play the Sims3 Pets(like an expansion)?

Or can we just start by playing directly with Sims3 Pets without the Sims3?

I haven't gotten the sims3 yet, and am hoping that I could just get Sims3 Pets instead of getting both.
