Anyone have experience in this business? Seems pretty lucrative. I am thinking of starting one in the next couple of years, doing feasibility study now. Any info on type of animal you've bred, techniques and most important of all, profitability would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like a specialise and high risk business to me. You would have a hard time swifting out the demand. Once you know that you may not have the skills for it as you are most likely zero knoledge on the technial skills. These are reasons enough for me to avoid it.

Well of course the technical skills need to be learned. And I have experience breeding a few types of animals, so I'm not exactly coming here with zero knowledge. I'd only like to know if its actually profitable running a business like this. Plus startup costs and anything anyones willing to share about it, really.

Well start up cost depends on what you are looking at. Dragon fish, jap coil are also deem as exotic. Cost varies with what pets you are keeping. If it is also you own pet, then is best to start as a home business.
I had a freind who sells puppies (that looks like pikinese dogs with a Japanese sounding name). It took him a while to get a b****. Once he got that he turn it into a business. After mating season he will put up pictures to sell the puppies. It is still a home business for him today.

Get your licensing first. The license will make you pocket bleed. Considering if you decide to import those animals from oversea.

Hi..... there are sections in PETS WONDERLAND dedicated to the many kinds of Exotic Pets with hundreds of enthusiasts sharing experience, knowledge and ideas... why not drop by and check em out. Maybe you could get a clearer picture of what's in and what's not...and who knows you could learn a few things too.
My 2 cents.

U wont earn much from selling life stock Especially if u are selling too many different type of pets, u will have a hard time taking care of them They died u have to bear the cost, so dont expect much Pet product will likely earn u more money compare to animals Besides, u better know wat u are dealing with Exotic pets are not as easy to take care as they are portrayed in the internet

RyoKenzaki: agree with u... pet product such as food, toy, clothing, accessories r a better deal.. lifestock is a hard line... u need to take care of their needs (food, health, water, supplement, and since urs is exotic u need certification as well). these needs, will cost u a bomb already b4 u can get back the return.. exotic animal trading is more toward the starter interest and enthusiasm in it.. if u r jus in it for the money.. u wont sustain long.. their "needs' will kill u off..

TS, do you have a degree in zoology? because this business requires a lot of knowledge and expertise regarding animal care and so on. You can't just jump in without proper knowledge.

First buy the pets and breed them yourselves first. Get the hang of it and then start selling. Know your risk and calculate the amount needed for all the expenses(You dont want to miscalculate and let your animal risk dying from hunger =.='')
Anyway, it's quite a lucrative market if you can market it well and let people know about this. Previously i did breed hedgehog but quit already now cause my housemate dont like me keeping those pets.
Anyway, good luck to your journey

Market price determine by demand and supply. If you can be productive and efficient enough, then you can get good margin.

Chincillas can fetch good price.. imho its better if u start from home. Be a home breeder and test the waters first.
I hear from business owners that say if u love to animals; its much better not to go into the business.. because you'll end up treating the animals like commodities/stock. In some cases you need to "dispose" some old stocks..
