This is when your honesty is being tested. If you insist of NOT PAYING after they ask you to, you have foolishly gamble your reputation away. Continue staying in the firm won't get your anywhere. And resigning gracefully (now/future) still leaves a black mark in your resume.

yeah. Why CAN'T you pay them back instead of having them forcefully takes a cut from your future salary ? The only main reason would be you have spent what you earned (or over-earned). Even WITHOUT letting your firm know (its right or wrong ) , they will assume you're someone who is not good with $$$, which yet again another big blow to your credibility ,affecting your chances in get promoted next time.
