I believe its a father instinct that he wanna make sure his son safe, so he did what he think necessary at that time which is no matter what he need to push away the walkers from the house. He didn't ask any help, he just went out the door and went crazy. But little he did know that the Heath, Michonne and the other guys went out as well to help them.

Only then he saw that there is a chance that they can pull it off. Soon almost everyone come out and did the unthinkable action before which is to risk their life and tried to save Alexandria. Then Sasha, Abraham and Daryl come with the madafaking rocket launcher which is epic.
