Nah,Shane also already slowed down due to hurt his leg,plus they are running out of bullet and zombies have infinite stamina than the human. Obviously he gonna choose for his survival rather than giving his ass to walkers.
furthermore,you cant easily called him selfish when he is the 1 that volunteer to search for the medicine,he still have soft heart.
i remember there is the a trailer for 2nd season premiere that leaked about Merle still alive and coming back in season 2,so i did not surprised about it if hes coming back.
