I need some advice on DVD recorders. Basically I'm trying to capture S-video/composite based input and transfer it to my computer for editing. Currently I'm using a capture card, but the setup is not working very well due to the capture card being an extremely dated product which is almost 5 years old. It's not even fully compatible with my computer thus I'm getting rather undesirable quality with no sound because the sound drivers don't work.
I thought of getting a newer capture card, but the good ones are not widely available in Malaysia and I don't want to have to import. So I'm going with a DVD recorder approach.
The general idea that I have with a DVD recorder is to record my footage onto a DVD-RW, transfer that to my PC, copy the footage, then wipe the DVD-RW clean and repeat the process. I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work, but I'm no expert with DVD recorders so if it won't work, do tell me
Next up is the DVD recorder itself. Any recommendations on what model I should get? I'm looking for a budget level recorder that would give me great quality at a reasonable price. I realise there are some HDD-based hybrids and normal ones. What are the principle differences? I'm assuming the HDD-based ones need to be operated via USB to retrieve the recorded footage. But other than that does it make a huge difference in terms of quality or whatever?
Also, the setup I'm thinking of running is something like this:
[VHS/Astro/Basically any videos source] ---RCA cables--> [Video splitter setup]
Then from the splitter, one set of cables goes to the DVD recorder, another set of cables to my TV
--- 1st set of RCA cables--> [DVD Recorder]
--- 2nd set of RCA cables--> [TV]
So to sum it up, I'm hoping you guys could help me out with the following questions:
1) Will recording onto a DVD-RW, then transfering to PC, copying over the footage, then wiping the disc clean and reusing it work alright?
2) Recommendations on what DVD recorder model to get?
3) Any major principle differences between HDD-based hybrids and standard ones?
4) Will my proposed setup work well?
Thanks in advance
