Yes, but then they will try to sell you theirsavings /investment/ insurance plans on the spot before opening a new account from you. 
They will then tell you they will need to justify in letting you open an account with them. The above reasons would do just fine.

i've opened mine at MBB Bandar Utama. Perhaps you can try there? 

You can try. I know that they only accept dbs/posb officially. I don't think can go through as its third party name. Not under your name. But I know they accept other sg banks. Only deposit takes longer like 3 days.
