QUOTE(vr2turbo @ Dec 16 2011, 05:58 PM) SS as in Semi Synthetic..... Owhh I didn't know that term SS is Semi Syn, I mean 45% of lube remaining in the engine when reach 5k, 45% means halfway from top to bottom of the dip stick? Then for 5k km is okay, just nice for oil change.... I wanna try 15w 40 castrol modern engine, but the foreman say scare later the oil drain very fast because its thinner. |

QUOTE(vr2turbo @ Dec 17 2011, 08:12 AM) I don't understand your 45% balance. Engine oil level have to be kept in between the high and low mark on the oil dip stick. Ohh, my 45% balance means I assume between the High(100%) and low(0%), my lube stay at 45% between them at 5k...Can always try / test the oil. Just monitor the oil level using the dip stick. If not good, then go back to previous oil used.... Mayb I should try, and I duno the API thing for my car engine as well |

QUOTE(vr2turbo @ Dec 17 2011, 01:48 PM) Oh! then it is okay. 45% between dip stick high and low level is good...... THX Alot!! Your provided link and answer solved some of my puzzle in my mind all these years! Old car no need follow so closely the API. Oil now mostly SM, if not SL. Of course got some SJ and even the newest SN. But if old car can still use SL and SM oil, no problem. For your reading.... http://www.pqiamerica.com/apiserviceclass.htm So do you think which one and brand I should go and give it a try first? based on my current engine condition that eat a bit oil... QUOTE(vr2turbo @ Dec 17 2011, 08:08 PM) ha! ha! true also, but very few FS 20w-50...... I see... I do agree that FS 20w 50 too hard to find in the market... Or I should say I've never seen any of them. Added on December 17, 2011, 8:17 pm Normally SS 10w-40 can still be used. SS are still mineral oil based. Even Group 3 Hydro Cracked FS are made from crude oil. Mineral oil have higher viscosity (thicker) that is why the blow by into the combustion chamber is less, not because it does not clean. SS is Mid viscosity, starts with 5w or 10w and FS the lightest at 0w. If don't want to try SS 10w-40 still can try Mineral 15w-40 instead of 20w-50. As mentioned if not good, can just switch back to 20w-50. For my turbo, I did try 5w-30, found it too light so, after a week switch back to FS 5w-40.....my ride is a 1991 model. For my wife's Sonata, was on FS 5w-40, then I switch to 5w-30 also can use and that is a 1996 model Now on SS 10w-40 because cheaper and her car is NA so no need FS oil..... |

QUOTE(vr2turbo @ Dec 18 2011, 06:58 PM) Yup, mineral. As named modern engine so slightly lighter in viscosity..... Thanks for your guidance! Then i'll try the castrol modern engine 15W 40 for my next change, hopefully FC and power increase Added on December 18, 2011, 6:59 pm Yup, Either Carrefour or Tesco, when on sale is cheap. Local ones are RM100 plus.... |
