Engine: 1.6L Campro IAFM - P. Persona.

Brand: Shell Helix HXZ
Oil Type: 10w-40 Semi Synthetic
Price: RM99 per 4L
My Thoughts: Just alright. Engine gets a little lazy as it nears 10k KM.
My rating: 3/5

Brand: Toyota
Oil Type: 10w-30 Semi synthetic
Price: RM91 per 4L
My thoughts: Superb. FC was better, far better acceleration and far better engine response. Engine feels much willing to move then before. Still feels good even when its nearing 10k KM.
My rating: 5/5

Brand: Pennzoil Platinum
Oil Type: 5w-30 Semi synthetic
Price: RM89.50 per 4L

I hope this is the right thread to raise my inquiry here after I have search through F&F section.

Would like to ask SIFUsss here... What is the right procedure to check the engine oil level (by checking the dipstick)?  Or should I say when is the right time to check that?  Start or do not start the engine and check?  Cause I have this scenario :-

i. If the engine is off, I can't see any oil level when I take out the dipstick.

ii. If the engine is running, when I pull out the dipstick, I can see the engine oil level is near to the lowest level.

P/S - I am using fully syn engine oil and currently only clocks 5,500km.  By right it should able to sustain till 8,000km of mileage, at least.
*
1. Engine must be left off for AT LEAST 5 mins for oil level check. But best done first thing in the morning OR half an hour or hours later.

2. If engine running, no way you will get an accurate reading as the oil is pumped all over inside the engine for lubrication of parts.

3. If engine is in perfect mint condition, it barely consume any engine oil even when it reaches 10k KM.

Thanks for the feedback.  I think my engine oil is real low.  But I wonder where does the oil gone to?  So far no oil leak symptom observed around the engine area.  There is also no oil mark on the floor underneath the engine bay. That's why I am curious to find out.  I told my mechanic, he said might be evaporate d.  I was like rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif

1. If your engine underwent a lot of mileage in its life time, yes, most probably the engine is consuming oil OR leak.

2. Best to observe what is probably wrong with it. The first start of the engine in the morning, have someone or perhaps you standing behind and observe the exhaust emission (as soon as it starts). If there are blue smoke (even a little) then yes, your engine's valve seals are slack causing oil to seep through. And, if there are blue smoke while driving, most probably your engine's valve seals are gone OR piston rings are gone. And if there are blue smoke when you full throttle it..... same thing...... valve seals and piston rings.

3. If not, then there are possibility the oil is completely burnt even before exiting the car's exhaust. Have to monitor closely.

4. Most obvious (or not in some car models) engine oil leaks around the engine head, block and bottom.

A few days ago I changed engine oil at a workshop.
After pouring some, he turned on engine and checked dipstick oil level. The dipstick showed it was one-third full. Then he topped up again, checked dipstick again...until full.

but then, this morning i checked oil level before start engine, the level was 30% above FULL.

Had the foreman used the correct method ??
Any side effect if the oil is too much ??

1. First of all, this is the biggest mistakes MOST MECHANICS be it bawah pokok types and those "trained" ones from dealers. Never ever ever ever refill the engine oil to max level during oil changes. Never ever. It will always be overfilled the next time you check (eg. hours later or first think in the morning) I guarantee it will overfill. This is because, once engine oil is drained and refilled.... oil needs to travel through all the oil channels at the top of the engine, through a number of them in order to reach the bottom of the engine where the end of the dip stick is. Therefore, most mechs will immediately pull the dip stick right after refill which is completely wrong. Some will start the engine for the oil to circulate around and into the oil filter, shut down and immediately check the dip stick is also very wrong and inaccurate.

2. Best method will be after refill to about almost max and then start the engine for about 10 seconds and shut it down. Let it rest for about 5 mins AT LEAST. And then pull out the dip stick to check. And, next thing is..... do not refill to max. Just level it just under the max line or in between the mid and max line is perfect... as mentioned earlier, engine oil travels throughout the engine before actually reaches the bottom.....it takes a little time for the oil to settle.

3. Thicker engine oils eg. 20w 50 will take a longer time to settle down compared to thinner oils like 5w-30.

probably yes since you using fully syn. You may have to try semi syn. When you engine hot and oil evaporated, you should notice white smoke come out when you open your oil engine cap if im not wrong.

1. A bit of smoke coming out of the filler hole is quite normal when its very hot.... But not too much though.

XXw30 engine oils not normally for low cc engine only?
*
no. that is the most common misconception we have. actually its widely used on new generation engines nowadays. check out Peugeot, Citroen, Toyotas, Hondas and etc. They are now using xW-30 oils.

Can my engine 4g15 use XXw30 engine oils?
*
why not?? as long as ur engine is not burning the oil off since its lighter (thinner) especially when the engine has gone a lot of mileage in them (more wear and tear - more clearance).

The brand name is Toyota. It is produced by Toyota company. Can get it in UMW around RM218+- or get it at outside around RM145+-. Confirm okay for low milage because new Toyota cars are using it also.

I think my engine maybe dun have burn engine oil. Because the engine oil won't less. Got any other ways to check whether the engine got burn engine oil or not? My engine ady 110k milage.
*
best way is to monitor it by yourself. check the oil level monthly and if it drops very fast and needing top up from time to time till your next oil change... then you may have some oil burning right there. if its a little it is quite ok. but too much like as in to top up every mid month or so... then its not quite ok. like in new engines, driving it hard or normal till 10,000 km oil change, it does not burn any oil. well, i would not say does not burn at all but then the level remains more less the same throughout.

It's either 5w-30 Pennzoil Semi or 10-30 Toyota Semi oil for my Persona (2 1/2 years old / 70k KM). These two are fantastic engine oils. So much more smoother, more responsive and powerful / better torque engine due to less drag.
