Engine: Corolla EE80

Brand: Shell
Model: Helix (20w50),yellow bottle
Price: RM58
Feedback: Oil color turned yellow-brown at 5000km, I considered this as the best oil I ever use.

Brand: Castrol
Model:20w50
Price:RM45
feedback: Oil turned dark after 3000km. Ended up beh tahan the color then changed oil at 4000 km.

Brand: Shell
Model:X100 (20w50), white bottle
Price:RM42
Feedback: Color-wise, X100 last longer than Castrol, but still cannot beat Helix. Performance no comment.

Following the initial success in the marketing of Pennzoil products by UMW Auto Parts Sdn Bhd, Pennzoil USA in its major globalisation programme in1991, awarded exclusively the marketing and distribution rights of Pennzoil in Malaysia to UMW Holdings Berhad.

Dear friends, when you tell your mechanic you want a Pennzoil 20w-50 engine oil, please make sure it is blue-bottled GT Performance Plus.

There is another Pennzoil product with same SAE grade, named MGMO, usually cheaper than the former.

Pay attention to API rating on the bottle.
GT Performance Plus is API SJ
MGMO is API SG.

If the workshop don't have GT Performance Plus, go get one outside.

Here is another comparison among the obsolete Shell Helix Super, newer X100, and HX3.

Attached Image

It is apparent that the obsolete Helix Super is 'HO LIAO' actually, duno why stopped production.
Meanwhile, based on API ratings, X100 is actually 'as good as' HX3. Most probably the additive is the difference.

Their prices are:
Helix Super ,API SL, RM58
X100, API SG, RM42
HX3, API SG, RM48
Perhaps the price already tells something.

instead of buying that oil from the hypermarket, why not top up another RM25.00 to get a much better oil which gives superb protection, not taking any risk? That is.. if budget permits la. Still within budget if you guys wanna compare to paying RM160-230 for fully synthetic oils
*
RM160 and RM89.90 is a huge RM70 gap leh, how come you say top up RM25?

Esso/BHP/Caltex/Castrol 20w50 are still at API SG/CD, selling at RM55-65.

sorry my bad, castrol magnatec RM79.90, wht I meant is that you top up RM25.00 and you still can go for a much better SEMI SYNTHETIC such as LiquiMoly's 10w30 or 10w40(yes, PROVEN) which actually gives you the kind of protection you need.

And as per mentioned in earlier post, it's still within budget COMPARING to going for oils that are RM160-200 which falls into the fully synth category.

this sounds to me like "since you got budget to buy Forte, why not top up a bit to buy Altis; then, since you got budget to buy Altis, why not top up a bit to buy Sonata?", and so on...

A few days ago I changed engine oil at a workshop.
After pouring some, he turned on engine and checked dipstick oil level. The dipstick showed it was one-third full. Then he topped up again, checked dipstick again...until full.

but then, this morning i checked oil level before start engine, the level was 30% above FULL.

Had the foreman used the correct method ??
Any side effect if the oil is too much ??

Just change my Liqui Moly 10w40 to Liqui Moly 10w30 with half bottle of Tufoil, it's more slippery than KY jelly.  rolleyes.gif  rolleyes.gif

I too dare not try.
I am using Eneos 20w50.

how to test 1 by 1? both ceratec and lm xw40 are already in my car. and primer is before i oil change (and after oil change put new lm xw40 and ceratec) lol
*
1st oil change, flush the engine using Lambda Primer, then pour in ENEOS 20w50.
2nd oil change, use Lambda Primer + LM 10w40 ss
3rd oil change, use Lambda Primer + LM 10w40 ss + ceratec.

To complete the whole test cycle, don't know take how long rclxub.gif

why i want to pour in an inferior oil? if the specs and price is already under lm, i really have no reason to  go with it right? unless you're telling me to try something of a sidegrade/upgrade (such as giving my car torco/redline/chemlube/motul treatment)
*
In case my car still consumes engine oil when using LM 10w40 SS , shall I :

1. Go back to ENEOS 20W50; or
2. Use Ceratec to fix the void/gap.

Any comment?

neither.
because xw50 is just a matter of avoiding something that is there, it is not fixing the root cause of the issue. unless your engine default specifications requires you to use xw60 oil. if xw50, it is still fine to go xw40, just like what i am doing currently.

as far as i know, ceratec would not fill up gaps either, as the ceramic does not harden up completely to allow gaps to be sealed.

best is that you fix your car, be it top overhaul, or complete overhaul/engine rebuild. mainly gaskets/seals replacement.

when was the last time you've done that? and what is your current car mileage?
*
sweat...
I've done top overhaul, spent RM2k +
Still consume engine oil, but much less extent than before.

Before o/haul, I need to use up 6L (Initial pour-in 3L, then top up the remaining 1L, then buy new bottle and used 2L) of engine oil to keep it at FULL level, until reach next OCI.

After o/haul, to date already clocked 2600km mileage, engine oil level dropped from 100% to 80% mark. Hopefully the remaining engine oil in the bottle is enough to make it till next OCI.

Better to just fix it rather than spending more money on engine oils
*
I've done top overhaul already.
If not, each 5,000km will cost me 1.5x4L engine oil. Never had peace of mind when going outstation.

Top overhaul only? I think around RM2k, the whole engine can be overhaul including piston ring as this is the main culprit engine oil makan besides valve seal..
*
QUOTE(shinjite @ Feb 13 2012, 03:30 PM)
Top overhaul 2k+?
What else did you do?

2k+ = full overhaul loh
*
oh really?
Yes, the mechanic did replace new rings and seals. Cost a few bombs there.
I see....so, I did a full overhaul. blink.gif

after spent so much $$, still consume oil ! KNS mad.gif

bro, i did my complete engine rebuild for 2k weih. and now almost zero engine oil consumption. despite going redline in revving all day erry day. sad to say but i think your mechanic has done a bad job, and costing you a ton at that sad.gif
*
Yes , that mechanic is really sucks. Conned me 2k for poor jobs.
Must splash red paint at his workshop someday.
