I opened this thread to start discussing regarding HTC Desire's technical questions.

I was trying really hard to get some answers on the main HTC Desire thread, but everyone has gone gaga about their new toy, so no luck there.


I'll start:



Does anyone feel that the sound quality of the speaker (ear speaker), is slightly lousy?

The person on the other line sounds 'metallic', 'robotic'



Feel free to bring up other issues as well. Yes, this is an awesome phone, but let's be realistic and address some issues about it and try to work it out.

Hi, just would like to see if anyone share the same problem as i do. I am using Belkin N150 router and it seems that the HTC Desire unable to get connected to the router. However at once at another place, Desire was easily able to get connected to another router without any problem.

So... is it the problem with HTC Desire or just the router?

new issue to bring up: Power button

do you guys feel as if the power button is abit 'soft'?

As in there is no tactile feedback when pressing it, sometimes u cant tell if u press it or not, unless the screen turns on

or is it just me with a faulty power button?

yap maybe need to change the channel in router. heard that not all brand of routers compatible with Desire... not too sure about that.

mayb try using some 3rd party s/w...
this may happen in the bluetooth connection also...

Question about android market : does it got search function ?

I do experience the metallic sound.. espeecially during loud speaker calls.. shitty quality

yes. there is a magnifying glass icon on the top right.

or you can press the hardware search button when you are in market application.

loud speaker sounding metallic is pretty usual for phones...but what about your ear speaker?


anybody have any feedback on their power button? anyone find it not having enough tactile feedback?

Just tested on my Desire, no problem it seems; Sent a MMS containing pictures to myself and received it without problem. Btw, was using Handcent.

Also, I tried using loudspeaker when dialing, and the dial tone was very metallic

I reported to Maxis and confirmed that it is their issue. They had reset the setting for me and I am able to send/receive MMS now. The CS did mentioned about the MMS was activated long time ago and this might cause the issue. Lol

Anyone else facing the issue with voice calls being "metallic" as posted by Guardian?

I'm planning to get a desire today..but bad voice quality would definitely deter me from getting it. Any other major issues?

i m loving it hehe

only 100+ Mb of space to install apps.. but gud news is, the apps file size is very small.. rarely exceed 3-4MB... all big2 one normally games one..

other than that, this is one kewl phone... plenty of things to test & explore..

Hi guys, regarding the gps, I keep getting "your location is temporarily unavailable". Any way to improve this? Sometimes it does work though.

no issues with GPS at the moment. It actually locks on pretty fast for me. Using google maps. also using a-gps

hows the back speaker quality guys? mine is quite bad.. seems like no bass sound at all.. i got a faulty speaker? hmm .. mine is maxis set btw

I picked it up yday from a Maxis center. No metallic sound as feared Lasted 13 hours since unplugged..with a good amount of wifi, maps and calls/texting + live wallpaper.

The keyboard is abit off though..plus when in landscape mode, the Send button disappears..anyone else encounter this?

yup when in landscape mode the "Send" button is disappear but there is a back button at the very left bottom u can use after u finish typing message. And send

may i know how to take picture and video? I can take photo by pressing on the screen for few sec but sometimes it does not work. How about video?

How is the touchscreen of desire? I heard that it only support multi-touch up to two finger right? Does it really bring a great impact?

yup the touchscreen of desire is excellent it is very responsive
for android 2.1 only support 2 finger touch, i think it is enough as for typing message at most 2 fingers will be used, normal usage oso using 1 finger only.
Do you think how many fingers you can play with it at the same time? need other finger to hold the baby as well bro

the 2 finger multi touch purpose is for the pinch to zoom feature like iPhone...
more than 2, would be games but so far i havn't encountered one...
iPhone also got 1-2 games use more than 2 fingers like tap tap revenge(like o2jam)

my desire was just robbed at around 3 pm - 3.30 pm at Masjid Jamek staircase way down to Kelana Jaya LRT line. my wound has been treated and I have just terminated my SIM card. What else can I do? Please advise. Thanks.

You were robbed at 3-3:30PM at Masjik Jamek? Was there no one else around? Sorry to hear that man I read awhile ago there is a software on Market that you can use to track your phone, we might want to try it.

I thought it was my phone being faulty which upsets me a lot, but after a factory reset everything went fine. After trying to figure out what prompted that I tried calibration again, while holding my phone. Bingo, problem reappeared. Placed it down on a flat surface and did calibration again, and my phone is back to normal.

So, if you're facing problems when tilting the phone, perhaps you can try this. Again Golvin, sorry to hear that

The usual ear speaker is ok for me. But the rear speaker I find it not that satisfying to hear.

Anyone experience poor WiFi and Bluetooth reception with desire?

You mean SenseUI? I think custom roms doesn't have those. Rooting is double edge sword bro. You lose the SenseUI, but gain full control of the phone.

So in case the 5800 was stolen, anybody using that phone would send an sms unknowingly to me. That way, I know who is using my phone. I'm not sure if such apps exist in android market, but now that you mention your story, I'm thinking of looking for it.

Guys need advice here just bought ap set desire but startup with T-Mobile branding. Is it advisable to flash it to Asia stock Rom or the generic UK Rom? And wat is the easiest method to create gold card? Thanks.

if i want upgrade my memory to 16gb is it juz copy all the data from old memory card to new memory card then slot in the 16gb ?

I asked this on HTC Desire Official Thread but no reply. So, asking it here on this forum, hoping for some answers...

I want to ask how you can use a custom photo as your lock screen wallpaper. I used to be able to do it with my HTC Legend, but can't seem to find it on the Desire.

Some forums I read said that although it's included in brochures, feature list and user manuals, they forgot this feature on the Desire which might be fixed on future updates.

ie. Lock screen wallpaper is different from Home wallpaper.

It is WaveSecure - is free and worthwhile to install. Once your phone is inserted a new sim card, a password will be requested. If the password is incorrect, the phone will immediately send a message to another number ( which you set earlier ) to inform you another simcard and the number of the phone and its location- is easy to trace then the "new owner"

By the way it is the Number ONE app in the android world - also available for Windows Mobile ( not free )

Maybe your settings is wrong. This is for Nexus but is the same for ALL phones:

Celcom APN setting
1) Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Points Name
2) Menu -> New APN
Enter this
Name : Celcom 3G
APN : celcom3g
MMSC: http://mms.celcom.net.my
MMS Proxy : 10.128.1.242
MMS Port : 8080

People : Go to the contact , select edit contact, Tap the camera image at the top left corner - a popup message " Select Photo".
You must of course put the photos in your card , any folder will do. The Gallery will auto detect all photos

Add favorite : People - add group - select favorites - add contact to group

The benefits of Froyo ??? read my personal experience here on one of the earlier release FRF72 - you will want to root your phone immediate and upgrade to the unofficial ones available on the net :

is it saying copy the update.zip file to the goldcard?

Hmm .. i already try tapping the camera image .. but notting happen , no popup msg came out (and yes my card got photos ready)

under add contact to grp , it only shows contact fr phone and google link ... None fr my SIM (i got 417 contact in SIM , 30 in phone , 200 fr google )

I m planning to get a Desire fr maxis, but stil struggling btw iphone 3gs or Desire.

However, just to check:
a) Is GPS free in Desire? Preinstalled?
b) R there enuf apps for Desire as compare to iphone?
c) Is gaming the weakest link for Desire?

Wat do u guys think the strongest point of Desire over Iphone?

a) nope, i dont think so...
b) overall apps, apple still has the most, and currently even there are plenty of options for free apps in the market...depending on what you need, i would say currently the free apps on the android is sufficient for me...besides you can root to access paid apps...
c) i have to agree, but then i'm not using my Desire for it's gaming prowess...

instead of asking what the strongest point, what the main reason you are you getting the iphone or desire?
the desire / android strongest point may or may not be a positive for you...

After you converted your sim card to a gold card, then only you copy the update.zip to the card - this zip file will unroot the phone

Frankly I never like apple apps , most of time I find too basic. If you want games, Apple more choices, but I believe Android will catch up. So far for apps quality and details features, Windows is still the best

There is no " which one is better" - depend what you want. There is no best phone.

IMHO, regarding item (1) above, GPS in Desire doesn't require data charge unless you're using Google Maps (GM), and GM actually uses data to download maps, not to lock the GPS satellite.. I'm currently using CoPilot on my Desire and I can turn to Airplane Mode (network off) while navigating using the GPS function. This is the best part I like about Desire, unlike iPhone, where you need network coverage to use the installed TomTom

Yea, love to know about the Co-Pilot as well. How good is it? Currently on Ndrive, but coming from Garmin, its slightly hard to adapt

It all looks fine on outlook. I notice that things like brackets and certain text just disappear. Anyone out there have the same problem?

Nope.. still ok to me.. not as soft as you describe but i would say it's really sensitive to turn on.. just a single click and no need a long press to turn it on.. kind of troublesome to me though

guys, why i cannot acces android market?when asked tp sign in to google account it says cannot establish to server eventhough i can surf the web,check my gmail etc.

Try restart your phone and log back again?
