Looking at all those wonderful galleries of DSLR pics, sometimes it feels like being a compact user is like bringing a plastic butter knife to a gunfight.

But what the heck, let's show em size doesn't matter.....So now open for business ...

Lowyat.NET -> Special Interest -> Photography, Digital Imaging & Video -> Photo Gallery --> Compact Camera Gallery.

So... let the pic spam begin and observe the subforum rules.

1) This subforum is for posting photographs and related discussion such as technique and execution (lighting, composition, posing, makeup etc.). Discussion about photographers or models is prohibited.
2) Photographs posted must not exceed 1024px in either width or height.
3) Only post photographs you actually took, not photographs other people took.
4) Spoiler up your quotes.
5) State your camera model at least. Compacts, Girly cams, Superzoom's... all small sensor also can except phonecam and webcam.

I start first..

Camera : Canon S90

Nice shot! Is that a water droplet on your camera lens though? tongue.gif

surprised it came out so sharp since you snapped at f8. Usually diffraction starts to set in starting from f6.3 rclxub.gif

@phillipe Awesome pics as usual =)

@RS42 Yup,surprisingly ISO 400 seems to work well. But that will be my limit already haha

@kiroz Pic 1 is good!Interesting angle there! For pic 2, i think maybe crop for a better composition?Pic 3: IMHO, uninteresting picture here.Perhaps a better angle or some leading lines? You can use the "seat/bench" there for a bokeh shot biggrin.gif

r3kahsttub Do provide your camera model and EXIF data ya =) Is that ISO 800? hmm.gif

You can use the "seat/bench" there for a bokeh shot biggrin.gif

r3kahsttub Do provide your camera model and EXIF data ya =) Is that ISO 800? hmm.gif
*
@kytz- About pic2, may i know how can i crop it for a better composition? Mind to show me how to achieve so? And about pic3, it's just to experiment one of the camera's modes - color swap, by turning all the light green in the orignal scenery to yellow.

Here're some of my photos using the same camera (Canon PowerShot 710IS),

after the merge on all 3 pics with the settings above, it turned out super noisy. must be something i'm doing wrong on photomatix(?).
*
It could be possibly happened after you tuned up the exposure or brightness in post processing. Why don't shoot with tripod? smile.gif

@philippecr: ND filter has actually been turned on already; believe that is the equivalent of a noise filter on the g10. i'll post the unprocessed pics later tonight: those had a lot less noise(!).

@chrisling: those actually have been shot with a tripod (albeit a cheap rm30 one). the noise appeared after i had use photomatix to process 3 shots of various E/V levels... will post up the original, pre-processed pics tonight...

Not really.. I use in-camera +1 sharpness, +1 contrast and +1 saturation. PP just balance and some vignetting effect.

S90 newbie here... please forgive my amateurish pics, but what more can you expect from an amateur?

Would love feedback on how to improve!
I notice many of my pictures seem noisy... am I using the wrong ISO settings? Or am I just pushing the lowlight comditions too far?

keeying: wow.... ISO800, 1250.... ^^"" u're breaking the compact camera ISO limit, tats why noise many. better keep it as low as possible. ISO400 below are quite acceptable. Use a tripod and longer shutter if u wan to shot in really-really-lowlight-situation.

I see ur settings... i guess u use AUTO izzit?

S90 auto ISO goes up to max 800.

But ISO800 to maybe even 1000 at a squeeze can be very usable.

Stimix, will share some of the TX5 shots later 2night. Am very happy with the TX5.
Few outstanding features about the TX5 is 10fps, sweep panorama, twilight mode and backlight HDR. Tested the waterproof, so far so good.
I hv the Panasonic FT1 before this but sold it to get this TX5.

Phillip, oh yeah.. the Exmor R sensor is something new and quite good in handling noise. I use the TX5 mainly for mountain biking la because it's shock and water proof. A fun camera to use esp. the 10fps burst mode.

Disadvantage? The pics quality not as good as those conventional lens. That's what I read on the net, but honestly, if you do a bit of PS, you can't tell the differences.

Added on June 16, 2010, 7:55 pmOk, stimix and phillip, these are the shots of TX5.

Yup.... sad to say... I've succumbed to the dslr poison tongue.gif

The 50mm is a loaner.. pinjam to play wan.. see whether I can get used to that focal length.

Nevertheless.. the S90 is still a keeper and there's so many situation whereby a compact is more useful than a dslr.

Hi guys, glad to see a thread for compact camera users, but even I am using compact, my compact is still is not as advanced as you guys. I am using an old model of canon powershot which is A590IS, it served me well though. btw my photos are just not good enough, but i feel like sharing lol.

spoiler it cause it is nowhere near the topic hahah sorry about that.

But few days ago I came up with a thought, buying a dslr, but with limited budget, my friend suggested me to get a used d5000 body + tamron 17-50, and i spent half of my day surfing here, and I saw great photos from canon S90, which is lots cheaper and not that bulky. My main purpose is just to take nice scenery and landscape since i will be traveling in the future, maybe some macro shoot as well. What you guys think? any suggestion?

@zs3889: those are nice pics, make me missing NYC already..btw regarding ur dilemma, if u only want a camera that is easy to carry around, take good pics and no further investment, than a compact like S90 or LX3 is already good enough for u..they can take great sceneries and good macros..but if dont mind to carry a dslr and have the money for it, it's up to you..picture comparison wise, the IQ and the depth of field of a dslr pics is absolutely better especially if u have great lenses..but having a dslr, it will burn ur pocket fast..first a body and a lens, then a flash, some more lenses,accessories..at least dat is how it goes for me tongue.gif last but not least, the more important thing is the man behind the camera..

Nice pics... with some PP, potentially great pics.

Regarding the cam issues, my humble 2 cent is that both formats has its place.

A dslr is great for those moment of zen.. seeing through the lens... isolated from the world.
It's great for phototrips whereby photography is your primary focus.

But for social outings/business trips... your other half/friends/collegue/other people will not appreciate you sticking a big dslr up their faces or you fumbling and wondering where to keep your expensive gear when everyone's already on the beach.

Perhaps you could look into the mirrorless cams like the E-PL1 or GF1.

Nawwww...

1- Kenot play telephoto for obvious reasons.
2- Underwhelming kit lenses .. my humble 2 sen is still that 24mm is too wide for general purpose use while as you know, the kit zoom too slow for low light. In good light, even compact will suffice rite?
3- Most importantly... its not cool tongue.gif

M43 lacks that dof but still got that uber nice panny prime as a do it all lens.

Hahahahahah

Thanks for the explanation, really appreciate it.

Well i don't think i'm gonna have any extra money to spend if im getting a dslr, getting a dslr is already a limit for me as i'm still a student. The idea of getting new camera came up because i'm working during my summer holiday so i'll have extra money. And i'll be traveling more in the future, so i seriously need a better camera than i'm having now.

Yea sniper I gotta agree with you, don't think i'm ready to have such a big company with me when going for trip, my main focus would be enjoying the trip and taking nice scenery as a memory, but not photography.

Reenz, where did you buy your s90? how much did it cost you?? are all those photos from your flickr taken by s90??

Thank you very much.

@zs3889: i think you already have your answer there, mate! great pointers from above! just to add on; if you're going to be taking pictures mostly in the day, then i think the s90 should be more than enough. if you're planning to take a lot (and i mean a LOT) of night shots, then you might want to invest in a dslr. both formats have obvious flaws (form/function) but i can see you're more than reasonable enough to determine what you actually want! smile.gif

anyway... here's one more for blurriness..

I bought it online from butterflyphoto.com for USD419 on the week it was released..dat was the cheapest i could get during that time..now i believe the price is around USD349 (same for amazon, B&H photo, adorama and newegg)

the photos in my flickr are from both my S90 and D90..but i separate them in two different sets, so just browse the ones in the S90 set smile.gif

Thanks, day shot or night shot, depends on my trip hahah. I've seen some awesome night shots taken by s90, but it was taken under long shutter speed, which means you probably need a tripod, wonder how i'm gonna use a tripod in the middle of times square or las vegas.

This is easy... S90 is small enough to rest on things like the control boxes on traffic lights... road dividers... tree branches etc. Or get the small gorillapod.

Adds another insect "blur"

Easy... put on a shaolin kungfu or karate kid pose and starecock with every passerby while waiting for the long exposure lor.
According to my calculations, this will reduce the possibility of camera getting snatched by 80%.

Sony TX5 - best part about this compact is you can choose the focus point, however unlike Isus, not too many flashy built in image enhancer.

Got it from Sg Wang..Boeing..RM1200 nia.. rclxms.gif But without casing & SD card..I walked to LYP & bought Kinston 8GB class 4 SD card for RM53 & also genuine leather canvas pouch for RM40..So actual price wth casing & 8GB car = RM1293 liao...Still cheaper than full package wth 4GB & pouch of ~ RM1350 smile.gif

Well.touted as S90 wth much compact & smaller size..me like it.. rclxms.gif Also F/2 mah Opening a new thread on this new Canon 300HS later..I originally wann Sony TX5 but after reading & comparing the reviews, decided on this ..Size is almost the same wth TX5 except abit curvy & thicker + no touch screen..Nice shouting damn good...

Thanks. I m looking this DC since last 2 month. All told me only avaiable jul or aug. Plan brought for my GF birthday.

I like it for low light capture, HD capture and high speed video. With this spec it come with compact type. Which mostly girl prefer.

Don't like Sony much. I hate the memory stick which more expensive. But heard new model have SD card liao. Don't no true or not.

It's not focussed on the sun.
This damage sensor thing centers around the same concept of starting a fire with magnifying glass. So if it's not focused or zoom into the sun, quick shots should be ok I suppose.

It's very blur.. but blur also must have a subject mar.

Motion blur.

Background blur

Or just artificially blurred.

It has to have a compelling reason to be blur smile.gif

This shot, the sky was quite cloudy that time. I can get the color out of the flowers, but just can't seem to get the cloudy sky. It looks overexposed on the sky because I adjusted the exposure to 0.70 (leave it untouched, wouldn't be able to get the flower's bright color). Very sad cannot get the sky color to the desired contrast.

Bingo! I used the highest shutter speed i've got and used flash plus manual focus... Canon S90 mah smile.gif
and no need billion times lar... if wanna take pictures of a droplet into water, maybe!

on a regular compact i think need plenty of lighting and must use flash to have fast shutter...

HDR is pretty simple. On your camera, just take 3 shots. 1 at 0EV, and another 2 more at +-2~3EV depending on situation. Then just combine them in Photoshop smile.gif

chickenducksoup , nice shot. I used to try shooting shooting from the top floor of the apartment on the right of your pic. Not as nice as yours!

Added on July 20, 2010, 3:11 pmI'm curious, how does the 'Miniature Effect' actually work eh? Pretty cool... I mean how to do it on a normal photo through self -editing?

Yeah nice nite shoot there..wondering what camera & setting he use bcos the EXIF detail corrupted liao hmm.gif Too bad i can't get this type of view here..haha..I think he set the exposure longer1-3 second?

Self Editing also can but mine was by the camera setting itself..Those latest Canon Ixus such as 300HS & I think Ixus 210 capable of doing miniature. But I think started wth Olympus PEN which they called it "Diorama" hmm.gif

I seriously don't understand why some folks insist on riding into this "sardine can" of a wet market.

woah! i've been missing awhile and it seems like everyone's taken it to the next level! a lot of tilt-shift attempts that turned out very good!

quick question - do any of you PP your images, and if you do, what software do you use? i want to give some of mine a more "vintage" feel, but can't seem to get it done properly. any help would be very much appreciated!

anyway... one from last night:

You're right... this spider has been steadily building its web for a week or so di. Very hard to get close and for the camera to focus properly with the small spider sitting in the middle of this huge web.

Here's another one.. taken on another day.

Quite underexposed and the WB is not right for "food photography" IMHO.You need bright colours not dull ones and do pump up the ISO when necessary biggrin.gif

Try looking around food photog like this one here

Or vkeong.com

@-kytz-: thanks for your input mate! the ISO was set to 400 and NR was already turned off; chances are at ISO800, the g10 will produce quite a noisy picture. unfortunately, lighting also wasn't very good in the restaurant!

as for the WB, i'd actually set it to 'cloudy' and 'auto' but i wasn't happy with the results at all, so ended up playing around with photoscape (cinema effect #2) laugh.gif point noted for the vibrance, though! biggrin.gif

people who shoot in RAW normally have too much time to spend in front of the PC. i'd rather get it right the first time.

shot RAW for the first time last weekend's trip to cameron, i can get more or less same result with JPEG, if i put effort while shooting it. but with JPEG i don't have to spend hours in front of the PC later

@r3kahsstub, then you can just go back and correct the WB la. I tot your WB lari dunwan correct.

@napee, i'm will not try to convince you to shoot RAW. But just so you know, converting RAW to JPG is just one click (well, CTRL+A and maybe a keyboard shortcut) away. Unless you have 1000's of pics, and/or a super crappy computer, it should take no time to perform the conversion.

and you'll be editing your pictures anyway (unless you dun review your pictures, which i dun understand why you would not).

shooting RAW doesn't make you put less effort into shooting. Rather, it makes your effort count. Imagine putting so much effort into a shot in JPG, only to realise your WB was screwed when you got home. Who's crying now?

Of course, if you do not have the option of RAW, you should by all means master the editing program you use.

Sei lor OOT already. Haha.

All these pictures taken from a digital compact camera? I need to brush up my skills with my Sony DSC TX1. Mine looks plain and dull. Sigh...Those pictures taken by fellow kentLKW are great! Love those street lights and their shimmering effect. Post processing involved?

Here's mine for a start:

Camera maker: Sony
Camera model: DSC-TX1
ISO Speed: ISO-320 (I don't even know what is ISO Speed...but what the heck, eh?)
