hihi,
I having a major problem in using a linux and i dont know how to fix it. So, i wanna find some solution, hope u all please help me smile.gif

I have a 80gb hdd and i installed linux redhat 9 to 20gb and 60gb is for window xp. one day, i changed my mobo and i find out i cant even access to my window and linux too.

so i decide to format. i using the Fdisk to remove the unknown partition and then format all space in my hdd, but end up, the Fdisk onli can detect and format the 60gb which i was install window xp.

now my 20gb which i was install linux redhat is locked. i using Fdisk to detect total space in hdd but the result is 60gb. i also using back the boot disk for linux redhat to test whether i can detect that 20gb space but the result also giving the answer NO. cry.gif

which mean now my total 80gb hdd become 60gb hdd already cry.gif cry.gif

so what should i do to detect and format that 20gb ??

Thank you.

quite odd indeed. when you were using the linux bootdisk, did u used fdisk to perform the partition detection? normally what i would do is to restart the linux installation CD, choose fdisk and proceed. but if u're saying that even with this, u've failed to detect your linux part, then maybe you want to try partition magic.
And another thing, what type of IDE support does your new mobo has compared to your old one. you might want to ponder on that as well. good luck.

maybe your mbr is screw up. boot xp cd. enter repair console and type fixmbr. some question to you, have u try to install xp yet? when xp is going to install, that the installation detect the 20gb? if it detect (probably named unknown partion) the u can try format it to windows partion. try it.

Linux partition is locked?

Fdisk can't detect the *unknown* partition too?

Have you tried booting using LiveCD?

Have you tried using the HDD Disk Manager?

Plenty of solutions.

Don't fret.

Cheers!

from win98 fdisk you need to delete Non-Dos partition
from winXP you can use disk management
from liveCD you can use qtparted

From Fedora or WinXP installation you should be able to see all partitions (linux or MS). If not try fixmbr.

Latest third party partition software should be able to remove Linux partitions unless it's the BIOS limitation.

yo

Partition magic will do, it will detect any ext*/reiserfs and swap partition on your hdd.

If the DOS fdisk detect the 20gb partition, then use Delete > Non DOS partition. It will detect and delete the linux partition on your hdd.

if still cannot detect, how about u insert your hdisk to other computer as slave and try to run disk manager or something that we all have suggested above. one more thing, to dual boot u need to disable the boot virus check in bios. i have discovered that u write earlier that u have encountered the boot virus. that the boot virus is couse by your action to do dual boot? smile.gif
