To all EPL Fans in Malaysia
As we all know Astro and ESPNSTAR secured the rights for all 380 LIVE EPL matches for the next 3 seasons starting from next season (2010/2011 season.) We also know now that we have High Definition TV now via Astro Byond.

Now, Astro have the rights to all the matches. How would you think will be the best way to broadcast the matches? My question is specifically on the package of the channels and how they are to broadcast matches that play at the same time.

My intention for posting this new topic is that I have on good authority that Astro guys regularly visit these forums sites. Im hoping that some of them could bring our ideas that we share to their bosses at Astro for consideration.

Here are some suggestions:

ANy other suggestions? I do not expect all the matches to be in HD. But I do expect all matches to be available through Astro and hope they do not go and show it via their mobile TV or any other platform.
Any price suggestions regarding the packaging is welcomed.
Thanks and lets share and spread our ideas! thumbup.gif

*UPDATE - John Dykes, famous host of EPL matches and programmes on ESPN such as Football Focus and First Edition has left ESPN STAR SPORTS..and it seems that a lot of football programmes on ESPN STAR SPORTS are coming to an end, not for this season only but forever. An example is Football Focus. If anyone has any updates on who will actually be doing the programming for EPL next season (Astro/ESPN) please note it here too. We could also discuss who should be doing the hosting job since John Dykes is moving back to the UK to pick up a job as the front man of a new channel called , The Premier League Channel.* icon_rolleyes.gif

Its pointless.... we all know that Malaysia only follow the Big 4....

who would want to watch Wigan vs Stoke? waste of time and broadcast money...
*
ur wrong there mate.. a lot of the other clubs have a huge following in Malaysia..
Newcastle, Spurs, Man City, Villa, Everton and may others have fans in Malaysia..
N there is no BIG 4 anymore..Liverpool are out of it, Man U are struggling, Arsenal are losing Fabregas..Chelsea are still strong..
So no..Malaysia do not only follow Big 4 coz there aint any more Big 4...

all lies!!lies i tell you!!

astro manyak tipu.cheats!!they know only to suck our money.dah la x clear, always 200% broadcast interruption and very lowya service for a freaking expensive fee.

the so called all matches i doubt they will show it, even if they did it will be at the expense of us having to pay more(sudah naik rm12 the sports package back then) or at less from other leagues.

pffffttt damn hard living here wth the communist type of provider.

should astro give us the chance to pick what leagues should be included in our sports subscription?

we need more coverage for eredivisie,Scots PL and J-league too
i'm a manchester united fan.no doubt about it,but i also watched birmingham city,everton,aston villa,manchester city matches
heck i'd rather watch english mid-table team matches than top italian club matches
*
most definitely right bout other leagues..i would love to see the Scottish Premier League and Eredivise come to Astro..
We Malaysians are already spoon fed with all the EPL now plus the all 280 matches next season..
That is y i think astro could probab;y start a football package where we could chose the league we would want in our package..
I think astro could make it compulsory for us to take the EPL since its on ESPN N Star Sports and the most money come in from EPL..
Then we could at least pick a minimum of one more league..so we could probably take a legaue we went than pay for league matches we dont want..

Can anyone here help me out add a poll to this thread? Teach me how to do it..I want to start a poll on what league should astro offer to football fans..

1 - EPL
2 - LA LIGA
3 - SERIE A
4 - FRENCH LIGUE 1
5 - GERMAN BUNDESLIGA
6 - SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE
7 - DUTCH EREDIVISE
8 - ENGLISH COCA COLA CHAMPIONSHIP
9 - USA MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
10 - JAPANESE J -LEAGUE
11 - OTHERS

Actually compared to our neighbour to the south, Astro is best cable provider there is. Imagine if there is another competition. You're going to be split in half and ended up paying more than what you intent at first. Their Byond package is also really neat and nice. For an extra measly RM20 i get HD and free world cup coverage on it. And i heard more and more channels will be in HD by year end right ?
You cant blame the provider for the inflation. Now i dont believe i can live without the extra channels we're having at the moment compared to what two years ago ? Now, with supersports 2, its even more worth it. Italian football has got more coverage for it. Why wouldnt i pay more ?
Imagine paying $80 for the world cup. Thats what singaporeans are paying.
The only minor fall is when it rains, other than that, i dont see any problem with it. Blame customer service? Heck give me a company which has a good customer service and is big in Malaysia.
*
i absolutely agree bro..
in singapore, the EPL is one one provider and the champions league is on another..
imagine that in happening here in malaysia..
paying two watch two best leagues but the price is definitely more expensive..
astro do provide more football nowadays..
if they were to make a football package alone, i bet most of us will take it eventhough they will be complaining
we dont see the goods of what we have now in malaysia unless we go to other countries that are worse..\
n ur right..most of the customer service in malaysia is crappy..!!! shakehead.gif

well ur right bout that..
from what i know, the comentators for the J league are astro's own comentators..crappy like..
for south american league its commentators from there..so cant do much bout it..
as for MLS, i dont know why..i get turned off just looking at how the scoreboard looks like from there..
n when i watch it, the video quality looks like form the 1970s or 1980s.. shakehead.gif

the graphic looks....umm,outdated maybe because they used different video encoding system(they used NTSC while most asian countries used PAL system)

it's hard to digitalized it in real time and we got it directly from the source (instead of going through the espn hq in singapore first) so don't expect a bpl-like graphic quality.

but i do expect a european(nay, english!) comentating standard.

ur right on that..it aches me to here the latin america version of English commentary..

Aside from Spurs, I won't say the rest have a "huge" following. Of that list, only Spurs have an official supporters club here in Malaysia. Think maybe Everton as well but it's a relative small following. Of all the football fans I know, 1 supports Everton, maybe 8 support Spurs but none support Newcastle, Villa or Man City. I reckon the latter has gained a small spike in following since they turned rich over night. The majority of fans I know, don't watch games not involving their teams which is why you often hear half assed comments and wonder if they were watching another team. I once had someone from ASTRO come to pitch a Premier League programme to us and he verified that Man Utd and Liverpool are ahead in terms of viewership. Chelsea have closed that gap recently while Arsenal are still lagging behind. Unless the other clubs you mentioned play against one of the "Big Four", they don't get much viewership. This is my understanding of it anyway.

The vast majority of Malaysian's still only watch games involving the "Big Four". Your definition of the "Big 4" is based on current form but Liverpool whilst not the giants we were before is still a big name and still have millions of supporters around the world. Hence, TV coverage of our games is still lucrative. Man U are struggling? They finished 2nd in the league. Arsenal are still constantly in the top four and English sides still consistently go far in Europe. Only recently have the likes of Man City, Villa and Spurs sneaked into the top 4. I therefore do not agree with your reasoning.
*
Well.. i appreciate ur views and comments but ur talking from ur experience when dealing with fan followings of EPL Clubs..i can tell u Newcastle do have a fan club here in Malaysia n im a mmeber of it.. and im sure other clubs do too..not only EPL teams, even team in the Championship have following here..Leeds, Nottingham Forest..heck.. Norwich City and Cardiff City even had Malaysian related owners so yeah they do have fans here..

Im guessing ur a Liverpool fan? Well if u havent realsied it, my comment that u quoted was from 19th of May..so yes..at that time I followed what the form book said..yes i might have gone wrong sayig other teams have HUGE followings..the word HUGE is probably inappropriate but to say Malaysians only follow BIG 4? Come on man..u as a Liverpool fan should realise that other teams also have fans..no matter if they are BIG 4 or not..

The point of my comment was as a reply to another forumer who said Malaysians only follow BIG 4 which aint true coz other follow their beloved teams even when they are not playing the BIG 4..maybe its only ur friends who support their team against BIG 4..

Yup..i have seen both ESPN STAR Spots promo for the month of August..
No mention of EPL
maybe astro might put it into their in house channel?
since they now have acquired the rights to produce their own programme and shows for EPL

Some bad news..4 me anyways..
I was watching Nadi Arena (Astro Arena's Sportscenter) today 22/07/10
They had some news on Liverpool's pre-season friendly..
At the end of the news, they showed a graphic on the screen announcing:
Liverpool vs Arsenal
15 August 2010
10pm on ASTRO SUPERSPORT!!!

WHAT??? NO more EPL on ESPN? Are we gonna get that Roshan guy hosting EPL shows? Or Jay Menon bringing us the latest news? or Rashid Salleh presenting EPL? Or even Shebby Singh?

Dont tell me we wont get ESPN regular pundits 4 EPL anymore like Steve Mcmahon, Paul Maefield, Ex Man U Paul Parker, Jamie Reeves, Andy Penders, and the some time irritating but cool Andrew Leci? Not to mention other A-Class former EPL managers and players as guest pundit? n no more Jamie Yeo?

With the exception of Jason Dasey who is decent (but not as good as John Dykes), Astro presenters sucks so much..look at them reading the news on Astro Arena..so many mistakes..

THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING!!!

6) "Football Fans" who love and support clubs they know little or nothing about.

If you ask me, hot chicks hosting football shows should limit themselves to wearing tight t's, and posing provocatively. They should not pretend to be a "fan" of a club and pretend they like and understand football and football fans.
*
i agree with u bro..how can u stand watching that Jay Menon talking football in her skimpy outfits when she cant even pronounce players name and clubs well..she's nothing more than astro's eye candy..the only club she knows inside out is man U..other than that she just reads whatever is fed to her.. doh.gif

It'd be interesting to note the format, hopefully the contract would not be too long for them to 'switch back' if it all fails horribly.  What's interesting is that SuperSport has 3 channels of which 1 is in HD.  So I'd think 2-3 matches simultaneously?  With only the 'selected' one in HD then.

As long as they don't use the other in-house english commentator, the chap who commentates on the MSL and J League, etc etc matches! He's quite bad IMO, not up to mark and doesn't do a lot of homework as well.  I've not heard the rest doing the commentary (Jason, Jay, Roshan) so am not too sure of the 'standard' thus far.  I just hope they use the actual feed from Sky or something.
*
Well bro..if u havent heard..the new contract that Astro and ESPN STAR won starts from this season and is for 3seasons!!! so if it does fail horribly, imagine 3 years without the ESPN guys..

U did point out an important thing though..Supersport has 3 channel of which 1 is HD..now if i am not mistaken, they said they will show all 380matches LIVE..but now all quiet on that front..

the thing is Supersport already catered so many leagues..n now they have added EPL..so look at their list now:

1. EPL
2. Spanish La Liga
3. Italian Serie A
4. German Bundesliga
5. French Ligue 1
6. English Coca Cola Championship

Now tell me what will they prioritise coz a lot of the games from these leagues will be played at the same time..unless astro does something simmillar like the World Cup and open up temporary channels on match days..EPL was alone on ESPN STAR Sports so u know all the matches will have no conflicts with other leagues..lets see what the geniuses at Astro do now..

N yes please let it be SkySports commentators!!! dont want any astro guys doing commentary..not even Jason Dasey..commentators should be at the stadium on site not in Asian studios..

3 years?!  Hopefully it'll be SKY feed then, or even BBC/ITV.  Not local ones, that's all we ask!
*
I fully agree..even last season when ESPN HD was introduced, Astro gave us the Premier League appointed commentators and not Sky ones
So for the big matches, we watched in HD but commentary was not from SKY
Even that sucked..
Cant imagine if all the matches did not get SkySports commentary feed?
If replaced with EPL commentators from the UK then its ok
But not Astro' version please..I pray to God endlessly for this not to be the case and we get Sky commentary cry.gif

Dump Steve McMahon... Too arrogant and thinks Liverpool & Man Utd are the only two football clubs in England...

Added on July 23, 2010, 4:19 pmAstro should seriously not create channel brands just for EPL... That'll give them an excuse to raise the price...

Instead use Supersports and Arena to focus Bundesliga... Most profitable league last season, increased viewership and there German football fans in Malaysia too... There is a market for it... ESPN & StarSports should focus on EPL oni...
*
The reason i started this thread was for us to discuss the various ways that Astro can use so that there wont be conflict or clashing of games on limited channels from all over Europe next season

I said earlier that Astro had said they have the rights to show all 380 EPL matches LIVE..I was speaking in the knowledge that EPL will still be on ESPN STAR SPORTS..now all the genius people at Astro seem to think they can cram all EPL matches to the Supersport channel that already consisted of Spain La Liga, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, English Coca Cola Championship and not to mention the domestic cup competitions..they wanna stuff all these into two channels and 1 HD channel? CRAZY!!!

I think unless they setup temporary channels for match days only and probably two repeats, like they did for World Cup, then the end result will be they will prioritise some big matches only..which is stupid of them since before this we could get all the matches regardless of big or small teams playing..

N they wont use Astro Arena since everyone who owns Astro has it..thye will want to suck money from people and put it in the sports package mad.gif

drop the french league channel, no one really follows French League. Instead, channel 811 and 816 can broadcast English game becoz i think Serie A and La Liga play diff time ryte?

Actually, why don't they open a chn for EPL like how they did for World Cup?
*
That might be the best solution.. I have been saying for a longtime..Astro should just open up temporary channel..lets say that channle will start 1 hour before a game..then show the match..then they show at least 2 repeats of the match then shut down the channel..next week another round of matches, they open the channel again..they wont open up an EPL channel I think coz its costly..

BTW, there are a lot of EPL games that have the same kickoff time with La Liga and Serie A..and I mean a lot! nod.gif

I don't see that's how its going to work... I thought it was only ESPN-STAR who won the contract... But we should be thankful it went to Astro and not TM... Imagine if had TM won da contract... Limited Unifi Coverage vs Massive demand for EPL... That would be nightmare for all EPL fans... lol!

I seriously think they should drop the French league... Who da heck watches Lille vs Lyon or Toulesse vs  Lorient... doh.gif

I don't find Italian league any lucrative either (sorry to the itallian league fans)... I just don't find Torino vs Reggina interesting...

Back to the topic, looking at the way they are going to promote, I see Astro Supersport being the main channel with 3 live matches simultaneously... So the coverage is spreaded out... As you can see, Astro is promoting FourFourTwo... Which only indicates their intentions to make the main channel... lol!
Cost... World Cup they can recover back the cost and plus its a shorter period... EPL is 9 months long... Imagine the cost involved to use the channel 9 months long... The English FA did mention about coming up with their own channel to broadcast EPL... But I think it got turned down... lol!
*
Bro..actually the EPL's own channel is scheduled to launch next month..yup..n guess who the head or the front man of the channel is..yes.. ESPN's own bred John Dykes..he left ESPN to move back to the UK to take up the position at the brand new EPL channel..the channel will be available all around the world but not in the UK itself..n id ont think the channel actually broadcast LIVE matches..probably the usual highlights, preview and special weekly shows as well as classic matches..no word yet on whether Astro will pick up the channel or not..

I know wht u mean by Supersport being the main channel with 3 live matches simultaneously..but try figure this out..before this on a Saturday night Malaysian time u had..

7PM - EPL ON ESPN

10PM - EPL ON ESPN
- EPL ON STAR SPORTS
- BUNDESLIGA ON SUPERSPORT

12AM - EPL ON ESPN
- LA LIGA/SERIE A ON SUPERSPORT
- LIGUE 1 ON SUPERSPORT 2

2AM - LA LIGA/SERIE A ON SUPERSPORT N SUPERSPORT 2

Now the biq question is one of the these leagues will become victim of Astro putting EPL on Supersport..yes it could be Ligue 1 but i have seen the Ligue 1 logo on the Torres advertisements..n i dont think Serie A will be dropped..the Serie A coming soon advertisement is the one i have seen the most times aired..

take a look at this link
JOHN DYKES IS BACK ON SINGAPORE TV SCREENS!!!

bro..the point is there is no more EPL on ESPN STAR SPORTS..astro actually won the rights together with ESPNSTAR to show EPL..while EPL will still be on ESPN STAR Sports in most Asian countries like usual (except for Sinagpore that is) we are not gonna get the same feed..Astro has decided to produce their own shows and everything related to EPL..so what u might get on ESPN STAR is highlights on Sportscenter and if we're lucky, Football Focus and Football Forecast..

But the big fact and issue here is there is no EPL matches whether LIVE or delayed on ESPN STAR..all will be on Supersport..so where does that leave us? 5 big European league crammed into 3channels..

Bro... You got it all wrong... I just check the August's AstroView magazine... All EPL matches are shown ESPN-Star... Nothing is on Supersports during EPL matches time... Football Focus has been replaced by Barclay's Express or something like that... Mon - Fri @ 8 pm if I'm not mistaken...

When they said Astro won the rights, it meant that ESPN-Star won the rights... The reason why its a victory for Astro is because Astro have an "Exclusivity Contractual Agreement" with ESPN-Star... The only other bidder for EPL rights for South-East Asia is TM Unifi... Astro represented ESPN-Star during the bidding process... lol!
*
is it so bro? then how come astro arena's Nadi Arena advertised Liverpool vs Arsenal 15August 2010 at 10pm on Astro Supersport?
its not only me who has seen it..
and another thing is that there's no mention of EPL on ESPN and Star Sports promo for August..usually they will put in in their promo..
haaaiiihhh..maybe ur right bro..who knows..
i tried checking online but astro only has July's issue on their page
can i ask u something? is all the matches in EPL scheduled to be live?
I dont mean the matches..i mean 1 round of matches = 10 games..is all the 10 games LIVE like they aid they would be back when they won the rights last year?
but astro for some reason are keeping so tight lipped on the issue..if it was on the normal ESPN channel, they should just say it..
instead on their FB they say they cant say anything yet..but their AstroView magazine already advertising so many things..
Well..lets just wait and see rolleyes.gif

if this link is worth anything, its an indication of something different

Admittedly, I haven't been following any football news since Inter lifted the Champions League but news that John Dykes has left the EPL is sad. He's the face of Astro's EPL coverage. I'll be happy if McMahon stays if it means I do without Andrew Leci. Please, for the love of God, drop Andrew Leci. He's like the male Stephanie Meyer of hosting. He's diabolical!

And if Astro ever stop getting SkySports feed, I'll unsubscribe the sports package and just listen to BFM 89.9.
*
I'd rather have Andrew Leci than the Roshan guy who hosted the World Cup on Astro..
I hate his presenting so much..please I pray to God its nit him that gets the job..just have Jason Dasey alone would be good..
Bet the Singaporean viewers will be jumping in joy having John Dykes back on their TV screens watching EPL..

NEW UPDATE FROM THE STAR..

QUOTE
Astro planning to beam all 380 games of upcoming season
By TEH ENG HOCK
enghock@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time, Astro All Asia Networks (Astro) is planning to beam all 380 English Premier League games of the upcoming 2010/11 season live into the homes of its sports package subscribers.

After the month-long FIFA World Cup “live” galore, the stage is now being set for a Barclays Premier League (BPL) “feast”.

The move will be significant, if it comes through, as only 120 BPL matches are shown live over a season, even in England.

Astro CEO Datuk Rohana Rozhan, who disclosed this to The Star, said the network was preparing to broadcast all BPL games live.

This would mean that local supporters of the lower-ranked teams in the BPL would get to see their teams in action every week.

The spotlight is now on glamour teams – Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool – with six matches shown live over the weekend and four delayed telecasts.

“Our aim is to show all 380 matches live. We’ll decide from those matches which teams to broadcast in HD (high definition).

“The big games will be shown in HD and maybe some in 3D,” Rohana said.

Rohana said the BPL matches would be aired over ESPN, StarSports, SuperSports 1 and SuperSports 2.

She said that Astro was also planning to create a SuperSports 3 channel for the purpose.

“Some matches would be streamed online as well as on Astro Arena, to allow access to our three million subscribers,’’ she added.

Rohana said there would be no issue over broadcast rights as Astro and ESPN StarSports had been successful after making a joint bid.

On whether there would be an increase in the sports package monthly subscription charges, Rohana said that would be “the last consideration.”

“We have to understand the fact that we have to make it affordable and customers must see value in that. Now we have to balance it against content cost,” she said.

Sixty per cent of Astro’s 2.94 million subscriber base are subscribers of the sports package, with RM66.95 being the minimum charge.

As for the other major European football leagues, Astro will air four matches each from the Italian Serie A and the German Bundesliga live each weekend, while Spanish Serie A fans will get to enjoy five live matches.

I am watching the CSI Trilogy rite now on AXN HD..
n during commercial break, they aired a new EPL Promo..
Not the usual Torres promo..
It a new one that they say more goals, more action and more games..
Weird that they say more games and not say all games or all matches LIVE like the Astro CEO Datuk Rohana Rozhan said in the article below..
But more importantly, at the end of the promo, they said EPL 2010/2011 on Astro Supersport, Supersport 2 and Supersport HD..
No mention of ESPN STAR Sports or Superport 3 like what was said..
Apart from one person who said EPL was listed on ESPN STAR in the AstroView magazine, its hard to find any other source.. sweat.gif

Well, I did see ads that say ESPN will also be bringing in some EPL content, so maybe it is really a collaboration between Astro and ESPN for the rights.  The only thing I can think of is that they will try to bring up to 5 to 6 games LIVE (ch 811, 812, 813, 816, 831, 832, etc) all at once, so that this frees up time for other league's games.  Maybe those not brought LIVE would be delayed or screened at a later time then.  My 2 cents la.

yes i forgot to mention that ESPN have changed their August promo..it now includes EPL and also Champions League qualifiers..I really hop astro show all the EPL matches..its not as if they dont have the rights..they won the rights spending more money than they had anticipated to beat of TM..if they dont show all the matches they legally can, it could be considered a marketing loss as they just buy the rights but dont use it..

Its just a matter of how they show it..they should implement the Red button function like they did for the World Cup..In the UK and even Singapore, the Red button function has long been used to show all the EPL matches that are played at the same time..

Hope astro dont push away other leagues just to fit in the EPL matches on their Supersport channels..thats why the Red button function is a MUST now.. nod.gif
