If you want to get an ADSL modem for linux, it would be best to get a modem that uses an ethernet connection to connect to the pc. As long as the modem uses PPPOE to dial into the Internet, it should be usable under linux.
So far I have managed to get Mandrake 10 to use such a modem to dial into the internet without much much hassle. Just need to create the necessary connection for PPPOE and it should work fine. |

second reco for eventless. get an ethernet-based modem. usb is mostly proprietary to windows as the driver is os-dependent.

Yes. Your ethernet card is quite likely to work on Linux, while a USB ADSL modem may not necessarily be.

PPPoE means, point to point protocol over ethernet. All dynamic ip streamyx are pppoe based. Hope it helps. Cheers! |

Hey there.
you are using LAN Card, well, is your modem a router? Or you dial up to the internet? If the modem is a router, than you can just set the gateway's IP to the router's IP, and tadaa.. you're done. If you dial up to the net, I'm afraid you'll need software like roaring penguin's rp-pppoe. I'm not that familiar with SuSe, maybe you can do a search whether you have rp-pppoe installed in your system. If you have that installed, everything else is very straighforward. If not, get rp-pppoe here. Cheers. P/S: Just reply here if you need any help. |

i'm not sure about my modem. but that model seem to have adsl modem and rounter also. how to know my rounter's ip? and how to set the gateway?
on more thing, i think i get confuse. what do u mean that my modem dial up or not? u mean dial up like we use to do on 56k modem? i not sure of it. in windows, i refer to the manual and manage to go online after i put in my username and password for my stremyx. what i do is something that post here when i do it the same way in linux, it show that my modem is connected. but i just can't surf the net. why meh? |

I'm sorry to confuse you.
Well, I mean, simply, inside Windows, is there an icon for you to click (like those icon for old 56k connection) that will prompt you for username and password before you can go online? Or you can straight go online without doing anything? You mean inside Suse you can see the modem is connected to the net through web browser interface? Or.. And, please attach an output of ifconfig Cheers! |
