Figo: "No doubts about our strength"

ROME - Luis Figo commented on the 4-1 thrashing of Roma at the Olimpico. "We had no doubts about our strength and potential," he said. "We were highly efficient for ninety minutes and we had the fortune to be in numerical superiority for a long time. But it looked like we were going to win even before the dismissal of Giuly."

Asked if Inter are dependent on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Portuguese midfielder replied: "I'm happy that he plays with us, but all our strikers are very good. The attack isn't a problem for Inter because whoever plays scores goals."

Inter's next opponents are PSV Eindhoven in Matchday 2 of the Champions League. "Let's hope we do well again in the Champions League on Tuesday."

Cesar: "Thanks to Mancini"
Saturday, 29 September 2007
ROME - Brazilian left-winger Cesar gave another polished performance for the Nerazzurri in Saturday's thrashing of Roma.

"I have had many chances to play in this start to the season," he said. "I have waited for my turn with tranquillity and character. The coach has put his faith in me and I thank him for this.

"By playing like we did against Roma at the Olimpico this evening we satisfied the expectations of the coach.

"Was I surprised by the starting lineup? No. With myself, Ibra and Figo we were almost like three strikers.

"By now we know our potential. Today's victory shows we're on the right track."

Sunday training in Appiano Gentile

APPIANO GENTILE - After last night's victory over Roma at the Olimpico, Inter were back at the training ground this morning to commence their preparations for Tuesday's Champions League visit of PSV Eindhoven.

Those who played most of yesterday's match, including Olivier Dacourt and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, went through a warming-down session in the gym (massage therapy, cycling, exercises in pool).

The rest of the squad, including Cristian Chivu, Maicon and Inter Primavera trio Francesco Bolzoni, Dennis Esposito and Gabriele Puccio, trained on the pitch for over 75 minutes (warm-up exercises, aerobic work, tactical drills, practice match). The Romanian defender started and ended today's session with physical therapy and strength-building exercises.

Marco Materazzi (physical therapy, strengthening exercises, technique drills with ball), Patrick Vieira (physical therapy, strengthening exercises, aerobic work) and Nicolas Burdisso (physical therapy, aerobic work) trained separately.

Adriano, Cesar (not included in Inter's Champions League list), Ivan Ramiro Cordoba and Julio Cruz (disqualified for Tuesday's match) had the day off.

Champions League: Inter 2-0 PSV Eindhoven Tuesday, 02 October 2007

MILAN - In-form striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his fourth brace of the season to put Inter back on track in Champions League Group G.

The Swedish striker gave himself an early 26th birthday present, scoring his eighth and ninth of the season to put the Nerazzurri in total control by the break.

Cristian Chivu was dismissed for a second yellow 20 minutes into the second half and David Suazo was shown a straight red for an incident after the final whistle.

Tuesday's 2-0 victory moves Inter level with PSV. Both sides trail Fenerbahçe, who held CSKA Moscow 2-2, by a single point.

PSV produced the first chance of the game on 12 minutes when Perez tested Julio Cesar with an angled drive from inside the area.

Further first-half chances for the Dutch side were few and far between as Chivu, back in action after a three-week lay-off, and Samuel erected a dam at the back.

Inter edged in front in the 15th minute, Ibrahimovic sending Gomes the wrong way from the spot after being pulled off the ball by Kronkamp.

Hernan Crespo just failed to connect with Solari's fast cross from the left for what would have been a certain second goal on 25 minutes.

It was 'Ibracadabra' again in the 31st. Zanetti stormed down the right and served Figo who crossed to the far post where the Swedish forward sent a looping header from the acutest of angles beyond Gomes.

With a two-goal deficit to overturn the visitors upped their game after the interval, Addo's flicked header from Perez' right-wing cross their closest chance of a reply.

But Ronald Koeman's team failed to capitalise after Chivu was red-carded for a second bookable offence.

Roberto Mancini threw on holding midfielder Francesco Bolzoni (who made his first-team debut in last season's Tim Cup semi-final return against Sampdoria) for Santiago Solari and switched Cambiasso to a defensive role.

Inter diligently defended their advantage and could have grabbed a third through substitute Suazo who forced a difficult save from Gomes with a low 25-yard drive before firing narrowly wide from close range.

The Honduran striker soured his display after the final whistle when he received his marching orders after an incident with PSV's Salcido.

Both Suazo and Chivu will automatically miss Inter's Matchday 3 trip CSKA Moscow.

Suazo: "I didn't deserve red"

Wednesday, 03 October 2007

MILAN - David Suazo went close to scoring on two occasions in the final stages of Inter's victory over PSV Eindhoven, but saw red after the final whistle following an incident with Carlos Salcido.

"I hope the footage can help me. I unwittingly struck the PSV player with my head, not with my elbow as the linesman said. It's always disappointing to get a red card, even more so when you have done nothing to deserve it. I only tried to hit the ball with my head, and the footage will prove this. I absolutely did not elbow him.

"I'm sorry about it because I really wanted to play in the cup. Right now it's important for all of us to be there.

"As for the match, we earned an important victory and now we have to continue on this path to win first place in the group."

Mancini: "The boys did great"
Tuesday, 02 October 2007

MILAN - Roberto Mancini spoke on Italian television after the Nerazzurri's Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven.

"The boys did well because it wasn't an easy game, and we knew we had to win at all costs after losing the first one in Istanbul," said the Inter coach.

"PSV are a fast and tough team to face and we gave almost nothing away. Even when it was ten men against eleven they hardly ever had any shots on goal. The boys did really well."

Inter brushed aside the Dutch outfit thanks to a first-half brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. "He's a great player, he's a champion who is decisive," said Mancini. "He's the finisher in our team and it obvious that he scores when he's in form. Players like him who have more class are always decisive.

"Can he win the Ballon d'Or? He has the qualities to win it but he needs to win the Champions League because it's usually given to a player who has won the cup."

Returning to Inter's display against the Dutch outfit, Mancini added: "You always have to be focused in the Champions League and you can never make mistakes. We got knocked out after two draws last season and we mustn't forget this. It's a hard, fascinating and strange competition; we will see what happens."

Asked to comment on the dismissal of David Suazo, Mancini said: "I didn't see it. I think the fourth man made a mistake. From the replay you can see he played the ball and tried to move forward. He was caught off balance and there was a clash of heads. He did absolutely nothing wrong."
