Ascoli v Inter Milan

Mancini salutes players after fightback

Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini believes superior teamwork was the key to his side's Milan derby victory.

The Nerazzurri came from behind to beat arch-rivals AC Milan 2-1 on Sunday, bouncing back from their painful midweek elimination from the Champions League.

Former Inter striker Ronaldo had given the Rossoneri a first-half lead but Mancini's men reacted, with Julio Cruz equalising shortly after the re-start before Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted the winner.

'My players have shown a lot of professionalism,' said Mancini.

'It was a bitter blow for us to exit the European competition in Valencia.

'But my players have played well today and they deserved the win.'

The result allowed Inter to maintain their unbeaten run in Serie A this season and put them one step closer to defending the Scudetto.

Inter are 16 points clear of Roma, who beat Udinese 3-1 on Sunday night.

'If we continue like this, we can say that we have had an extraordinary season,' said Mancini.

'What we now have do is to continue to do even better because I don't think we will be able to repeat what we have done this season in the future.'

Former AC Milan striker Hernan Crespo admitted the win could not have come at a better time for the Nerazzurri.

'It has been a difficult week for us, considering what happened in Valencia,' he said.

'I think this derby has come at the right time and we are celebrating because it's an important result for us. We have won both derbies this season and we hope to continue to do well.'

Ronaldo, who got a cold reception at the San Siro from Inter supporters, was delighted to have scored in the derby but admitted Inter were the better side.

'I felt a lot of joy to have scored in the derby,' he said.

'Unfortunately, it wasn't sufficient because we lost but I am nevertheless happy with my performance.

'We have faced an Inter side that have done really well so far and I think they deserved to win - they played a great match.'

Rossoneri coach Carlo Ancelotti believes his team paid the price for their midweek Champions League triumph against Celtic.

Milan needed extra-time to narrowly beat Celtic on Wednesday.

'In the second half, we lacked aggressiveness,' Ancelotti said.

'I think it was due to the fact that we gave a lot against Celtic and the players didn't have much time to recover for this game.'

Ancelotti praised captain Paolo Maldini, who celebrated his 600th Serie A appearance on Sunday.

'Maldini has done today what he did in his previous 599 league games,' said Ancelotti.

'He has shown great character, great determination, strength and leadership.'

Ascoli 1-2 Inter Milan

two goals by Zlatan Ibrahimovic

ASCOLI, March 18 (Serie A) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit a brace as Internazionale beat struggling Ascoli to maintain their unbeaten run in Serie A and edge closer towards clinching their 15th Scudetto title.

The Sweden international twice got on the end of Adriano assists to help Roberto Mancini`s team extend their lead at the top to 18 points after Roma`s goalless draw at Fiorentina.

Massimo Bonanni`s injury time penalty meant no clean sheet for the visitors, but the points are all that count and Ascoli`s 15th defeat of the campaign leaves them rock-bottom, six points away from safety.

After last Sunday's 2-1 triumph against AC Milan in the city derby, Inter were quickly out of the blocks with Dejan Stankovic and Ibrahimovic looking particularly sharp up front.

Within five minutes, the lanky Swede tricked his way past Ascoli defender Riccardo Corallo, but his final touch saw him push the ball over Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos` goal from the edge of the penalty area.

At the other end, Michele Fini's darting run and cross from the left saw him deliver a teasing ball, which was well dealt with by the commanding Julio Cesar in the visitors' goal.

In the 16th minute, Maxwell`s shot from the left was from too acute an angle and ended up in the crowd.

Julio Cesar then did excellently to deal with Viktor Boudianski`s awkward shot from distance, before Sasa Bjelanovic hit a volley from 30 yards into the crowd as the action shifted from end to end.

Maicon then returned the compliment before Ivan Cordoba headed Luis Figo`s corner inches wide on the stroke of half-time.

At that stage the game looked evenly balanced with neither team looking to seize the initiative.

Figo then tried to inspire his team with a fine piece of footwork, but again the visitors were let down by poor finishing.

Another chance went begging on the hour mark when Adriano`s shot bounced inches wide, before the opener finally arrived in the 66th minute.

A fine cross from Adriano on the right picked out Ibrahimovic in the centre of the penalty area, and the first time shot gave Eleftheropoulos no chance.

Two minutes later Hernan Crespo's acrobatic effort was on target but not strong enough to trouble the Ascoli custodian.

However, the 74th minute brought the crucial second that all but sealed the contest.

In similar fashion to the first, Adriano again picked out the Swede, who this time had more time and controlled well before lashing the ball home from the left side of the penalty area.

Eight minutes from the end, an Adriano mistake allowed for a quick Ascoli counter attack which ended with a powerful Boudianski strike, but again, it flew straight at Julio Cesar.

Two minutes into injury time, Walter Samuel raised his foot too high on Bjelanovic leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty, which substitute Bonanni crashed home.

Serie A Report: Second Half Spectacle Gives Inter Win Two spectacular second-half goals by Maxwell and Hernan Crespo allowed Inter to beat Parma at San Siro.

Inter started with their customary 4-3-1-2 system with Figo behind Crespo and Adriano. Parma responded with a 3-5-2 system with Budan and Rossi upfront.

Inter had the first chance in the 4th minute as midfielder Cambiasso almost profited from a mistake by Parma´s Couto, but his shot finished narrowly wide.

Overall the home side have started the stronger, with Figo coming close in the 16th minute with a right-footed effort that sliced across the goal-mouth.

Serie A Update: Inter Held At Reggio In a highly balanced encounter, Inter were held by Reggina at the Stadio Oreste Granillo to a 0-0 draw.

Reggina started the game aggressively and had a decent chance in the 11th minute as Lanzaro's header from an excellent position finished wide.

Figo was having a good match and had some good moments in the first 25 minutes. However the best chances of the first half belonged to Reggina. Nevertheless the first period finished 0-0.

In the second half it continued to be a balanced match. There were two chances in succession for both teams within the space of a minute as first Julio Cesar made a brilliant save on a shot by Di Dio (63'), then on the counterattack Cambiasso almost found the opening goal for Inter.

Another chance came in the 76th minute with a shot by Dacourt that finished on the crossbar. But aside from that neither team managed to really set the match alight as it ended goalless.

Crespo Set To Remain At Inter - Report According to the 'Gazzetta dello Sport', Chelsea are set to free the Argentinean striker in order for him to sign for the Nerazzurri.

Crespo Set To Remain At Inter - Report

Hernan Crespo's desire to remain with Inter for another season might become reality in the upcoming days, as according to reports coming from Italy, the English club is set to free Crespo from his current contract, which would allow him to sign for the Nerazzurri.

The former Lazio striker is in fact still tied with Chelsea and is only on loan with the Italian champions, however if these reports are confirmed, then the attacker will finally succeed in signing a new deal with Inter which will tie him to the club for at least another season.

In other related transfer news, Inter are preparing to lure Deco from Barcelona to replace the departing Figo in a bid to keep the technical level of the midfield high

Inter Targeting Three New Stars - Report The Nerazzurri are already planning the team for next season to be able to compete in the Champions League as well as in Serie A.

Inter Targeting Three New Stars - Report

user posted image

According to reports coming from Italy, Roberto Mancini has prepared the shopping list for next season and has indicated three players as the main targets from the next transfer market, one for each department.

In defence, the main objective is Chelsea's Terry who is still undecided about his future. The Nerazzurri have already contacted the manager of the defender, but so far no steps forward have been made.

The most likely to wear the black and blue shirt is midfielder Diarra of Real Madrid who has been linked to Inter since last summer. He would be the perfect replacement for Vieira who is looking for a return back to England.

The biggest bet would be getting rebel Cassano, who might not have the whole backing of the dressing room, but would still add quality to the attack line.

These are probably the most realistic targets for Inter who want to bolster the squad in order to improve their Champions League campaign for next year.

Oriali: Important To Keep Crespo Inter transfer guru Lele Oriali admitted that keeping striker Hernan Crespo at the club is top priority.

Oriali: Important To Keep Crespo

Inter transfer market consultant Lele Oriali is optimistic the club will be able to keep Hernan Crespo for next season.

The Argentinean, contracted to the London club until 2008, is currently on loan in Italy with the Nerazzurri and according to reports Blues coach Jose Mourinho is adamant on bringing the player back to Stamford Bridge.

However, the Nerazzurri are hoping that the striker will still be a part of their plans next season.

"We have a clear agreement, one which was signed by the player as well," said Oriali on Friday. "Chelsea have the right to recall him and have until May to decide. If they choose not to take up their option then the player will stay with us for next season as well. We are optimistic, though, especially because he has stated that he wants to continue wearing this jersey. We are very happy with him and we hope this will happen."

Reports last week claimed that the Stamford Bridge outfit were ready to let Crespo stay at Inter after he admitted he wanted to end his career with the San Siro club.
