Materazzi: "When in difficulty..."
Sunday, 02 March 2008 23:38:29

NAPLES - Marco Materazzi captained the Nerazzurri in Sunday evening's Serie A clash against Napoli.

"We have to show what we're made of at difficult times," he said after the defeat. "I think we will show it in our next, important matches.

"We have had a lot of injuries this season, me included. We're trying to get everyone back and I think having them all available will be an advantage for Inter.

"We're not thinking about Liverpool. From Tuesday we just have to think about Reggina because it's an important match for the championship. After that, we will obviously focus our attention on the Champions League return leg, and we really want to make up for the defeat in the first leg."

On the referees, Materazzi commented: "I have respect for everyone, for Italians and foreigners, but I can't deny that there's a bit of nastiness towards me. I have paid when I have had to pay, but in other cases... On Wednesday Mexes was sent off, and it might have been dubious, and we spoke about it for three days. I was unfairly sent of in Liverpool, but I'm a world champion so I was judged as naive.

"Rather than talk about the referees and their decisions, I think there should be more balanced judgement."

Julio Cesar: "We will react"
Sunday, 02 March 2008 23:51:40

NAPLES - Julio Cesar made a series of fine saves after his error that led to Zalayeta's early goal at the San Paolo, including a vital penalty save from the Uruguayan striker in the second half.

He explained: "I had three things in mind when I made that mistake. First I thought the ball would move more quickly and that I could get it with my hands, then I thought of clearing the ball, and then I thought of giving it to Chivu, but unfortunately I did none of these three things, and gave it to Zalayeta.

"These things can happen, and I'm sorry. You can never make mistakes in my role. It's a pity we lost, but my mistake definitely influenced the game and I accept full responsibility.

"I calmed down after the error and made some nice saves. It wasn't a penalty at all, and luckily I saved it. I thought we could draw after that penalty save because I could see that it motivated my team-mates. We gave our all but we didn't manage to come back. However, Napoli played an excellent game. They counter attacked and made it hard for us. They were fired up in front of their fans and wanted to win at all costs.

"Now they'll start saying the championship race is re-open but we still have a lead. It's better to be six points in front than six points behind. We have to stay calm. We will talk about it among ourselves and we will react. This difficult time will pass. We have to pick up right away because we have some very important matches ahead of us.

"What worries me about the Liverpool clash? I know that everyone is waiting for this match, from the fans to our president. We can turn around the result from the first leg. It will be hard but we will play until the end, and with all the champions in this squad, we can do it."

Inter 100: Birthday Boys

Internazionale celebrate 100 years of existence today. Giancarlo Rinaldi wraps up a century of the Nerazzurri
Thank goodness the city of Milan has proved big enough for the both of them. In truth, the founders of the Football Club Internazionale di Milano could hardly have known what an amazing rivalry they were creating. Certainly, the 100 years which followed have seen them put their hometown so firmly on the footballing map that surely no other place on earth can boast a double act of more successful sides.

As with so many teams in Italy, there was a large slice of overseas influence in the creation of Inter. The exact details of the historic night of March 9, 1908, in a Milanese restaurant remain sketchy. However, it is clear that a large number of those present at the birth were from abroad - many of them Swiss nationals living in the city. A total of 43 names appear on the document which brought this new sporting organisation into the light of day.

It is hard to contemplate such romance now, but one of the prime movers of the time was an artist. Giorgio Muggiani was a famous caricaturist and would go on to be one of the pioneers of advertising. He drew up campaigns for world-renowned Italian brands like Cinzano, Pirelli and Martini. His greatest success, however, could arguably be said to be the matching of the colours black and blue in the Inter emblem.

Zanetti: "Calm and confidence"
Monday, 10 March 2008 20:23:16

MILAN - Inter captain Javier Zanetti spoke to the press ahead of Tuesday's Champions League round of 16 return against Liverpool.

"We're first in the championship and we have ninety minutes to try and pull off a feat in an important game," he said. "Liverpool are very experienced in this competition so it will be a hard-fought clash, so Inter will have to play a great game and try to make as few mistakes as possible."

Gianfranco Bedin, one of the Great Inter players who took part in the European comeback against the Reds in 1965, said he recognises himself in Javier. "I was very pleased to hear these words, especially from him - one of the greats of this club's history," said Zanetti.

"We're confident going into this game, we have a match to play. We have to try to stay calm and play a great game.

"We know Ibra is important for us. He can turn a game at any moment. But the whole team has to try and qualify, it would be a wonderful present for the president and all the fans."

Asked in which position he will play tomorrow, Zanetti replied: "I'm at the service of the coach and the team. I will play and make myself useful. We're hoping to have Chivu back because he's very important for us.

"We will have to be aggressive and be careful not to concede spaces. If it doesn't go well we shouldn't make a drama of it because we have a championship to finish. But let's wait before speaking. We're hoping to play a great game and qualify for the next round because anything can happen in football."

On Inter's Centenary celebrations, the captain said: "It was right to celebrate one hundred years of history. Now we have to concentrate on this fixture. The fans will be close to us, as always. They will be by our side tomorrow."

BREAKING: MANCINI QUITS INTER
Tuesday 11 March, 2008

Roberto Mancini has sensationally announced he is leaving Inter at the end of this season after their Champions League exit.

The Coach kept the news to himself during the interviews with Italian and foreign television stations, but at the start of his Press Conference with the Italian newspapers made the shock announcement.

"I think that these will be my last two and a half months on the Inter bench. After four years and even if I have another four years left on my contract, I will leave Inter. I have already told the players."

However, when interviewed moments later, Julio Cruz and Esteban Cambiasso said that the Coach had not said anything of the sort in the locker room.

Mancini was asked if the Champions League elimination to Liverpool had played a part in this incredible decision.

"No, tonight's defeat has nothing to do with it."

To add to the layers of mystery, he then refused to confirm what he had said when he walked back out past the television cameras, insisting he would only talk about the game.

Mancini declares Inter peace
Saturday 15 March, 2008

Roberto Mancini insists the tension with Inter and Luis Figo has been completely resolved ahead of the Palermo test and is by no means a truce.

The Coach sensationally announced he was quitting the club at the end of this season straight after their Champions League exit to Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

However, less than 24 hours later he changed his mind following a meeting with President Massimo Moratti and pledged to remain for the full four years of his contract.

"We had a clarification with the squad and they reacted well. The positive thing is that in this week we have talked about everything, but not the Champions League elimination. It went better that way," he joked.

There had been rumours that Mancio only agreed to stay after setting ultimatums for Moratti, which included the permanent departure of Patrick Vieira, Luis Figo and Adriano - all players who had touchline rows with the tactician.

"The confidence in me was reaffirmed. The meeting with Moratti was only about 10 minutes, as there wasn't much to clarify. We just confirmed our reciprocal respect and faith.

Mancio rails against ref
Wednesday 19 March, 2008

Roberto Mancini has blamed the referee for "unfortunate" decisions that saw Inter held by Genoa, but Gian Piero Gasperini wanted the win.

For the eighth time this season the Nerazzurri were reduced to 10 men as Pelè received two yellow cards in the opening 40 minutes.

Despite the situation they clung to the 1-0 lead from David Suazo's goal until a spectacular Marco Borriello equaliser five minutes from time.

"The red card affected the whole game. On the first booking the player made a mistake, but on the second you just need to see the replays to know the referee was wrong," said Mancini.

"We must start by saying that referee Gianluca Rocchi is unfortunate when it comes to Inter, as it is not the first time he has penalised us. He did the same against Sampdoria."

Mancio risked seeing his six-point lead at the top reduced to four with this result, but Lazio's last-gasp 3-2 derby win over Roma actually increased it to seven.

"Regardless of what happens in Rome, I am happy with the performance from my players. They fought until the 90th minute."

Genoa felt they deserved more than a point from the Marassi meeting and Coach Gasperini explained why he left Capocannoniere Borriello on the bench in the first half.

"We had the opportunity to win this match and we had done well in the first period, too. Borriello had never rested up until now and he definitely needed it."

Mancini: "The boys were exceptional"
Wednesday, 19 March 2008 23:11:42

GENOA - Roberto Mancini analysed his team's performance after Wednesday's 1-1 Serie A draw with Genoa.

He said: "We started very well and conceded almost nothing in the first half. But the sending-off conditioned the match. It would have been a different game otherwise.

"For his first yellow card Pelé shouldn't have reacted to the blow he took. I think the second booking was a bit excessive. We can't always play with ten men because we have too many midfielders out.

"We didn't play much but it was hard because Genoa attacked en mass and we had problems attacking back.

"The boys did very well and were exceptional. They fought until the end, and they have certainly accumulated more fatigue after playing many matches with ten men.

"We're still in front and it's better to be in this position. I would have been very happy at the start of the season if they had told me that with nine matches to go we'd be six-points ahead of the second-place team."

Cambiasso: "A positive end to the day"
Wednesday, 19 March 2008 23:38:36

GENOA - Ten-man Inter drew 1-1 at Genoa but move seven points clear at the top of the table as Lazio hit a late winner to defeat Roma 3-2.

"Playing against Genoa with ten men could have gone worse because they play very good football, but we did well and we only just missed out on earning all three points," said Esteban Cambiasso. "But when you look at the other results, it was a positive round for us.

"I'm happy to give my contribution to the team. The coach has always shown faith in me. Despite all the negative things that are happening, and that didn't happen last season, this team is showing it is strong."

When asked to comment on Pelé's sending-off, Cambiasso replied: "I never talk about the referees. We should leave them alone. We all complain even but suffer when they make mistakes. They only have a second to decide and there's no use attacking them if they get something wrong.

"Mancini has a different opinion? Each person has his own personality. Life would be boring if we all thought in the same way."

Mancio states Ranieri respect
Friday 21 March, 2008

Inter Coach Roberto Mancini pays tribute to Juventus counterpart Claudio Ranieri ahead of the Derby d'Italia and discusses team selection.

The old rivals redraw battle lines at San Siro tomorrow and there will be a typically fraught atmosphere in Milan.

However, Mancio has lightened the air of animosity by complimenting his opposite number.

"The Bianconeri have done very well so far and a great part of the credit belongs to Ranieri," the former striker declared. "He is a person with great human and technical qualities.

"Inter-Juve is a real classic at the top of the table and it has come at the end of a very tiring week for us."

Inter were held by Genoa on Wednesday evening and were forced to play with 10 men for 50 minutes after the controversial dismissal of Portuguese midfielder Pelé.

"It seems that the way games are refereed has changed in some ways," Mancio commented.

"Certain things that weren't even fouls in the past are now met with a yellow card."

Mancini finished by talking about his team selection for tomorrow's epic battle.

"We are hoping to have Dejan Stankovic and Patrick Vieira from the beginning," he revealed.

"They were both fine in training today, but we will know better what condition they are in tomorrow morning."

Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Rivas; Chivu, Cambiasso, Zanetti, Jimenez; Cruz, Ibrahimovic

Inter duo regret Juve loss
Monday 24 March, 2008

Javier Zanetti and Dejan Stankovic have argued that Inter can consider themselves unfortunate to have lost to Juventus on Saturday night.

The reigning Italian champions were defeated 2-1 at the Giuseppe Meazza in a tie which has allowed Roma to move to within four points of the Nerazzurri.

Although Juventus have been rightly praised for their performance, Inter were unfortunate to concede an offside Mauro Camoranesi goal in a tie which they also struck the woodwork twice.

"We could have done without the defeat," noted captain Zanetti. "Especially when you look at what happened in the game - we didn't deserve to lose.

"Unfortunately it went as it did and now we have to think about our next two matches [Lazio and Atalanta], which are both away from home.

"We'll have to work hard from now on, but let us not forget that we are still at the top of the League. We want to stay there..."

Stankovic, who hit the bar in the game with a first half header, was also keen to remind everyone of the League standings.

"Incidents like the offside goal can affect the outcome of matches, but we mustn't start crying about it," noted the former Juventus transfer target.

"It's a pity that no one saw it, but it's not right to start any controversy. Nevertheless, we reacted well and could have drawn the match.

"We're still four points clear at the top of the ladder and we must try to at least maintain that advantage.

"We now have a week to prepare for the Lazio game, a team who I know well as I played there for five years."

Mancini: "We're top and we'll stay there"
Friday, 28 March 2008 15:29:46
[FOTO Friday, 28 March 2008 15:29:46]

APPIANO GENTILE - Roberto Mancini spoke about the fitness of his players and Inter' lead at the top of the table in Friday's news conference ahead of the Serie A Week 31 trip to Lazio:

Mancini, what's the situation regarding Cambiasso, Cesar, Ibrahimovic and Vieira ahead of tomorrow's game?
"Cambiasso, Cesar and Vieira won't play, but Ibra will be called up."

Many of your players played for their national teams in the week. Wouldn't it have been better if they had rested?
"Those who played will come with us (to Rome), while those who missed the internationals will stay in Milan. We're all back together for the first time today because they came back in groups, but I think playing with their national teams did some players good."

It seems that many Lazio fans don't mind dropping three points against Inter, so that the result doesn't favour Roma. What do you think?
"No player goes on the pitch to lose. We will go to Rome where we will face a full-strength team that is in great form, and we know it will be a very hard game. Whether we play well or not, we have to win at all costs."

Massimo Moratti confirmed yesterday that Roberto Mancini will remain as the coach of Inter. What do you think about this?
"I'm obviously pleased, although there was no need for it because we had already cleared things up. I know exactly what he expects."

In such a delicate moment as this, which are the aspects that reassure you?
"It would be a delicate moment if we were four points behind Roma, but we're in front and the last two games have been a bit strange. We have eight games left and we can win all of them. It will be important to recover all our players next week. I don't think there's anything to worry about. Even when we had a bigger advantage, I always said the championship would go down to the wire."

[B]How is Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

"Ibrahimovic went to see a doctor for some tests and he reassured him and told him what kind of work he has to do in these days. He has come back in high spirits and he has been working very well for three days. I'm certain he will improve markedly and he will be fundamental if he continues to work in this way."

And how is Dejan Stankovic?
"Stankovic played an excellent match against Juventus. He has had lots of problems due to ongoing pain, and this has affected him. Just think that he was out for two months and he did everything to be there, otherwise we risked not even having eleven players. I think this is a great thing for a player and it's very important. He might not be at one hundred percent but right now having him below his best level is enough for us."

Serie A Week 31 - 29/3/08 (19.30 UK)

Lazio 1 - 1 Inter
Crespo 11 (I), Rocchi 59 (L)
Stadio Olimpico

The woodwork twice saved Inter in a 1-1 draw away to Lazio, as Hernan Crespo and Tommaso Rocchi keep the gap at four points.

It was turning into a familiar nightmare for the Nerazzurri, who famously lost the Scudetto on the last day of the season with a 4-2 defeat here on May 5, 2002. Their nine-point lead over Roma was reduced to four going into this weekend and confidence was low after a home loss to Juventus.

Olivier Dacourt, Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba were long-term injuries, while Pele returned from a ban and Julio Cruz was suspended. Marco Materazzi was dropped after a poor performance against Juve, while former Lazio stars Hernan Crespo and Dejan Stankovic started. Massimo Mutarelli was sent to the stands following his red card against Fiorentina last week. Curiously, these two teams will meet again in the Coppa Italia.

Lazio got off to a strong start with Cristian Ledesma blasting over and Valon Behrami just failed to get on the end of a Lorenzo De Silvestri cross to the back post.

However, Inter took the lead with their first opportunity after 11 minutes. Douglas Maicon got away down the right and crossed for Crespo's tap-in from six yards. It was Crespo's first Inter start in almost two months.

Emilson Cribari's header was smothered, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic was caught in possession as Ousmane Dabo forced another tough save out of Julio Cesar in the space of 30 seconds.

Nuno Maniche cut in from the left with a central shot comfortably held by Marco Ballotta, then Julio Cesar plucked a De Silvestri effort out of the air. Nicolas Burdisso's header from a Cristian Chivu free kick found Ballotta ready at the back post.

Ibra sprung the offside trap and charged forward on the counter, forcing Ballotta to take two touches to save it with Crespo hovering over the loose ball. At the other end Tommaso Rocchi's first touch let him down clear on goal.

Inter were now playing on the counter and Crespo avoided the offside flag for a shot too weak to really trouble Ballotta. However, Lazio were dominating play and a cracking Dabo screamer was palmed one-handed out from under the crossbar by the brilliant Julio Cesar.

Cribari needed a fine tackle to cut short Maniche's counter inside the box and a Ledesma snapshot was deflected off target by Burdisso. Chivu's sliding tackle on Behrami in the box cut short an important chance, then former Inter reject Goran Pandev dribbled past three players before Burdisso deflected his shot towards safety.

After the restart Ibrahimovic rolled back for Maniche to fire into Ballotta's arms, while another Dabo effort was charged down as Lazio notched up 10 corners without a single reply.

Inter were pinned back and only went forward on the counter, but Ibrahimovic wasted a golden opportunity when he hesitated, not shooting or passing to Crespo, allowing the defence to close him down.

Maicon intercepted a crucial Pandev pass that would have sent Rocchi clear on goal.

Lazio finally got a deserved equaliser just before the hour mark. Rocchi was left totally unmarked and onside by a matter of inches to gather a long Ledesma ball, kept his cool and slid an angled drive past Julio Cesar. The two central defenders were static and slow on this occasion, though the decision was extremely close.

Inter got their first corner a few minutes later and Ibrahimovic nodded off target, but Lazio continued to dominate.

On 64 minutes Julio Cesar performed an absolutely stunning save. Behrami's strike from the D took a deflection to loop into the air and the goalkeeper was at full stretch to fingertip the 'accidental' lob on to the crossbar!

Crespo: "Looking forward, not back"

APPIANO GENTILE - Hernan Crespo is confident that Inter can keep their Serie A lead over Roma and secure a third consecutive Scudetto for the Nerazzurri.

"It's the same as it is for cyclists - we have to look forward, because if you look back they overtake you," he told Italian television.

"Unfortunately it's a very delicate period for us. Getting knocked out of the Champions League shook us a bit, but the old Inter will return now."

He hasn't played as much as in previous seasons, but Hernan still has the chance to make a decisive contribution in the last seven rounds of the campaign. "I might have been selected less than I wanted, but this is right and it's normal," he said.

Inter travel to Bergamo on Sunday, while the Giallorossi host Genoa in their second consecutive home game following the midweek Champions League defeat to Manchester United. "Roma have a lot of 'enemies' because there are other teams behind them, so they have to be careful too," admitted Crespo.

"As for us, we just have to think about ourselves and get back to winning."

MILAN - Francesco Toldo believes Inter can take a giant step towards a 16th Serie A title with victory in Sunday's match against local rivals Atalanta.

"All the matches are fundamental, and I can assure you that this is not a cliché," the Italian goalkeeper told Sky Italia. "The points up for grabs on Sunday will be very important from now until the end of the championship. If we get them, these are three points that will give us an enormous advantage."

During his long interview for the Inter 100 e lode series, Toldo added: "If you're too relaxed in the role of second keeper it's hard to be ready when you're needed, but I'm always ready and I always try to make sure I'm prepared."

Mancio loses Ibra and Chivu
Saturday 5 April, 2008

Roberto Mancini is confident Inter can defeat Atalanta despite missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Suazo and Cristian Chivu.

The Serie A leaders have been going through an injury crisis and were already without long-term absentees Walter Samuel, Ivan Cordoba and Olivier Dacourt.

"Tomorrow will be the most important game and, if all goes well, even more decisive than the one coming up with Fiorentina."

It won't be an easy task, as Atalanta have an enviable home record and are fresh from conquering Milan at San Siro.

"They proved they are in good shape and played a fantastic game against Milan for almost the whole 90 minutes. Clearly the Rossoneri poured forward in the final stages to get back into it. Atalanta are a pacey side with very talented players."

Inter have been stuttering of late, picking up just two points from their last three Serie A games, but Mancio believes the situation has changed.

"It was very important to spend this last week training with all the players and returning to tactical work with the team, something we had been unable to do before because of the sheer number of games in our schedule.

"We have also got back some players from injury and I think our difficult moment in terms of fitness has passed.

"Unfortunately we had a few figures who had to get back in shape, but could only do that by playing instead of training, so that shows on the pitch come Sunday."

Mancini was asked about reports that Milan are set to snap up Ronaldinho - a player who has also been linked with Inter.

"I don't think Barcelona want to sell," he commented. "Ronaldinho is a great player going through a difficult time. With these players it always depends on them, as if they want to play then they can always make the difference.

"However, and I say this from personal experience, it is impossible to skip training and play good football. In the long run it's just not possible."

The tactician certainly has gone over this territory before when talking to Adriano, who will return after his loan spell at San Paolo.

"I don't know what kind of lifestyle Adriano is having right now, nor how he is training. He is scoring now and I have heard positive things over the past few weeks after some difficulties early on.

"In any case, I repeat that the most important thing for a player is to live the lifestyle of an athlete, but that goes for everyone."

Inter squad: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni; Zanetti, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Rivas; Stankovic, Figo, Jimenez, Vieira, Cambiasso, Solari, Maniche, Pele; Cruz, Crespo, Balotelli.

Serie A: Atalanta 0-2 Inter
Sunday, 06 April 2008 17:07:27

BERGAMO - Inter beat Atalanta to keep their four-point advantage over Roma with six games of the Serie A season remaining.

Patrick Vieira marked a return to top form with the opening goal after 21 minutes, Mario Balotelli adding a well taken second in the 74th.

Mancini called up just three strikers for the Bergamo trip, selecting Crespo and Balotelli in his starting XI and leaving Cruz on the bench.

Seventeen-year-old Balotelli combined with El Valdanito to perfection and it was the offside flag that kept Inter from going into the break with a big lead.

Inter went close to what would have been a stunning goal when Cambiasso crashed his first-time effort just wide of the woodwork after pouncing on a loose ball.

The Argentine marshalled the midfield brilliantly with Vieira and it was the Frenchman who grabbed a deserved opener when he headed in Balotelli's corner.

Crespo tucked home just before the break after latching on to Balotelli's deflected effort from Stankovic's brilliant cross, but the flag went up for offside.
