EA Sports Locks Out Multiplayer Modes On Used Sales
EA tackles used game sales with new one-time only code.

QUOTE
May 10, 2010 - EA Sports is going after the used game market.

Starting with the release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the publisher will introduce a new Online Pass, a one-time registration code included with each brand new copy of the game. The code allows players to access "online services, features and bonus content."

Those who purchase the game used can buy an Online Pass for $10 or sign up for a free 7-day trial. The pass will be implemented for NCAA Football 11, NHL 11, Madden NFL 11, NBA 11, FIFA 11, and EA Sports MMA as well. The pass offers different features for each title, however, players will not have access to basic multiplayer features if purchased used.

"You will be unable to play multiplayer online game modes or use your downloaded content in online game modes," EA says. Online leagues, dynasty and franchise modes are also only available with the Online Pass. The break down for each title can be seen on the publisher's official website.

"This is an important inflection point in our business because it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhance premium online services to the entire robust EA SPORTS online community," said Peter Mooredoh.gif  ), President of EA SPORTS.

Despite being the leader in used game sales, retailer GameStop, which acknowledged it plans to focus on digital content in the future, supports Electronic Arts' new direction.

"GameStop is excited to partner with such a forward-thinking publisher as Electronic Arts," said Dan DeMatteo, Chief Executive Officer of GameStop Corp. "This relationship allows us to capitalize on our investments to market and sell downloadable content online, as well as through our network of stores worldwide."

They already tried in on BFBC2 with the VIP Codes. Heard Skate 3 will also implement the multiplayer lock.
How much will used games that have this lock valued after this?
Probability of other publisher following suits is very2 high. Who will follow after this? Activision? Microsoft? Ubisoft? Sega?

good, finally. xian see your psn id still pending in my friend list

but i don't see why implementing vip codes to access extras is not good enough. just make those extras really delicious., and people like me will prefer to buy new.

the way i look at it, denying online capabilities to 2nd hand user is not that fair coz there is no additional cost for online setup for the developer to accomodate the 2nd hand user. the maximum number of people going online is equal to the number of game discs out there. the introduction of the new 2nd hand user does not increase that cost in any way coz the orignal gamer can no longer play

from what i see, denying online capabilities for 2nd hand user is already very obvious. they are trying to earn as much as possible.

actually 2nd thoughts i see your point. especially for multplayer centric games. people buy new they make money, people buy 2nd hand they make money too. the single player group is too small to give a damn. think its perfect. no better way.

the vip codes to access extra items is like optional for for 2nd hand users, if you like it then you buy it.
but this is downright forcing it.

now it's only on EA Sports. but what would happen if FPS also follow? most of FPS have very short SP because it's main purpose is for multiplayer. 2nd hand copy for such game have to be sold at ridiculously low price coz who want to buy at high price for SP that last for 5 hours..

nobody is forcing. we have d power of choice. actually to me whatever lah, is their right to make more money. if the game i like i will buy anyway. if new pun new lah. i not so hardcore anyway. some games I seem to never stop playing them, so making time for a game is more of an issue to me then price. i use to buy 1 game every month, but i notice i have backlogs finishing them. so buying a new game every 2 months once that cost rm180, is like 90rm per month, which is affordable la. chin chai la bagi chan.

if you only buying new game then it won't affect you.
but still, when you want to sell those games, it will be more difficult or have to sell at very low price.

UFC requires code to play online

QUOTE
THQ  is the latest publisher to join the fight against the sale of used games.

The company confirmed PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions UFC Undisputed 2010 will require players to entire a one-time use code to access the game's multiplayer modes and features.

The code is available with all new copies of the game. If the game is bought used and the code has already been redeemed, then a $5 access fee is required.

"THQ is delivering a truly unmatched online gaming experience for fans of UFC and across all fighting games in general," the company said in a statement issued to IGN. "The main enhancement of UFC Undisputed 2010's premium online content is the new "Fight Camp Mode" in which players can assemble ranks of up to 40 people and train together.

"This is a significant value-add to the game as players can continually improve their skills by training with their friends and bringing teams of MMA specialists together."

UFC Undisputed 2010 is set for release next week. THQ said it will have additional details at a later date.

One-time use access codes continue to be a growing trend in the industry.

Electronic Arts plans to soon implement the "Online Pass," a code that must be entered before players are granted access to multiplayer modes in most of the publisher's upcoming sports titles.

Ubisoft has also stated it plans to combat used sales with a similar method.

ala, go all the way la since u developers having a ball doing this. do it for single player too. get the console players into this new paradigm too. bundle the consoles with internet. no internet no play. single player is for sissys anyway, who wants to play with artificial friends anyway. with this new buisness model i envision another great project from sony - the PS3 GO.

Sony did it with a PSP game a few months back(SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3)

related news(most probably the "official reason" for the hoohaa):
QUOTE
EA's controversial Online Pass for sports games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 was widely interpreted as a direct assault on GameStop's lucrative used game business. But GameStop, intent on getting the last laugh, claims that the pass could end up helping  their business, reports GamesIndustry.biz.

"There have been some questions concerning first user only content and the effect on our used business," said CEO Dan Matteo during an investor meeting. "We have not seen an impact thus far and as a matter of fact, we will turn this into a positive with our ability to sell DLC through our investments made in technology to market and sell this content in our stores."

Paul Raines, GameStop's chief operating officer, added, "We do not anticipate in impact to our used margins due to [Online Pass]. The amount of used game buyers currently playing online is low, and as it grows, our proprietary models will manage trade and sale pricing to reach margin goals."

Both executives referenced an upcoming program that will promote downloadable content in stores, to make it more visible to the average consumer. It's even partnering with Microsoft for the effort, and will sell the content directly to the customers. Raines even claimed the market tests will "bring the power of buy, sell, trade to the digital sale," implying that their used game business might somehow extend to digital content as well.

Whether GameStop is truly confident about EA's recent moves, or merely hoping for the best, is hard to tell. It does sound like the retail giant has plans to keep up with changing technology, so we'll have to see how they adapt as we move forward into a more digital age. Either way, it doesn't sound like EA's Project 10 Dollar is harming GameStop's trade-heavy business model thus far.
