How you have your espresso? Single shot? Double? Sugar? Milk? One shot till finish or take your sweet time drinking?

As the discussion has gone beyond my original intention, I spoiler out my personal encounter of espresso wink.gif

Espresso is just a fancy name for 'coffee' or "cafe" in Italian. It is usually taken after meals and should be consumed as a double shot, with or without milk, and definitely without sugar.

Italians never have a cafe latte or capuccino after meals.

Fancy name only? I believe it is more than that. At least it doesn't look like the typical "coffee" we have in Malaysia. Anyway, this small cup of concentrated coffee gives me good impression blush.gif

mixed with latte? me too laugh.gif I mixed it with latte (milk) but then I thought what the purpose of getting an espresso if I'm making it into Latte? Anyway, it wasn't bad after all.

No offence to your comment though.

If you go to Milano, "cafe" = espresso i.e. coffee served in the small cup.

The iced latte you get in Starbucks is 1 shot espresso + milk + ice.

Enjoy!

wao so bitter also can drink ah o_O

i saw on travel and living (the coffee show, forgot what's it called) you take the whole espresso in one gulp, roll it with your tongue, and then after swallowing you clean your mouth with a cup of tea sleep.gif

actually some of the pros don't even drink the kopi, they just roll it in their mouths and spit it out in a general basin sleep.gif

Unfortunately, good coffee is almost non-existent in Malaysia. Our baristas just don't have the necessary skill, especially in establishments like Starbucks and Coffee Bean. I reckon only the hotels have semi-decent baristas.

Adding sugar to espresso is acceptable practice.

The first time i had my espresso, it doesn't really work as a 'force me to stay awake drink' like what everyone told me.

The second time i ordered a double shot. I can't sleep for 2 days (seriously, i toss around my bed for few hours, then doze off for 2 hour and i am awake again)

I swear to stay away from espresso, until last week where i was damn tired. Has another double shot, but it didn't work at all. I felt asleep shortly ... and coma for like 13 hours...

Cheapo way of making a latte is to buy one shot of espresso and ask for a cup of hot milk. Pour in together and walla, you got your latte with the price of espresso. I heard this from a friend who worked in Starbucks.

On the other note, the only way to know espresso gone bad is when it is a lil sourish.. So they say..

So, basically most of you guys here just get the espresso and dunk it down the throat?

Well, there is something I have learned from my first "encounter" with espresso: drink it while it's HOT!

BTW, this is my first Espresso (before mixing with other stuffs):

i think in msia they charge for milk... in the states it is free to get milk from the cordiment bar.. but most of the time the milk is not that fresh...

ermm.. some beans are more acidic than others... a better indicator is the bubbles or the temperature

So much trouble just to drink coffee. Truthfully you should be asking recommendation here. You be be down in the shop trying out the different kinds of coffee. It all depends on your taste and what you are eating. Everyone has different tongues, they can decide for you. For me cheap coffe taste no worse than expensive ones. They just taste different and it is a matter on when I want a certain taste.

Yes, I'm actually asking for recommendation here. I was clueless when I was served with an espresso. That's why I want to find out what are the "proper" ways (or recommendations) on how to enjoy it.

I only used to enjoy Nescafe.

Hhmm.. Come to think of it, yeah, certain coffee beans are more acidic. However, to one's tongue, coffee is supposed to be sweet and fragrant.

Try Espresso with whipped cream.

I personally don't fancy coffee...all coffee still tastes the same to me >_<

Its a highly concentrated coffee.
got 3 layers when it is brewed
crema, body and heart
good within 10 seconds, after that the taste will change

Espresso is a basic drink of the coffee. If you add a tip of frothed milk on top espresso with half packet sugar may taste good to me. If you want so fancy flavour, you may add flavour syrup like vanilla, hazelnut, irish cream, caramel etc. I saw few time where they served espresso not in proper way as
not up to the standard of espresso. I only drink the 1 i make smile.gif but it was several years ago.

That is actually more like a flat white. Latte's have the layer of froth on top.

Coffee connoiseurs will know that the last place to go for good coffee is Starbucks or any other mega chain. They rely mostly on automatic machines and volume rather than skill of the barristas. The coffee leaves a bitter aftertaste in your mouth that aren't supposed to get with good coffee. And personally, all that adding of hazelnut, vanilla etc simply destroys the taste of espresso tongue.gif

that's wrong.

Espresso is coffee that is made from pushing steam through finely ground coffee. It is pulled for roughly 23 seconds, and most barista time their shots every hour or 2 to ensure that their grind is correct.

Contrast with steeped or infused coffee, where the coffee grounds are put into a "sock" or sieve and left in hot water like the Malaysian style, or via plunger. The coffee produced is different.

Another coffee making style is siphon or vacuum brewer. I have one of these. Espresso is intense, full bodied. Coffee made with a siphon brewer is delicate and smooth.

I have an espresso machine at home, but nothing beats the La Marzocco that i work with at Coffee HQ(Monash Clayton). Along with the Mazzer grinder biggrin.gif heavenly.

i suck at latte art, though. the only things i can pour are the apple and the rosetta.

p.s.
and also, i totally hate the fact that Starbucks calls their staff "Barista". Barista is a honour given to those who complete 5 years of training in Italy. shouldn't be used too lightly.

little input .. correct to say that "pushing Steam' but need to consider to pressure bar ....

normal will be 12 bar .. to 16 bar ...

as for me ... starbuck or even some 5 star hotel coffe outlet cannot come " Close " to what i prepared for myself
( nespresso capsule machine N90 )

exspresso "tech" is to have high pressure bar machine .. and good coffee bean and most of all ...drinks it one go while is still 'warm"

so .. those people who go to starbuck or some luxury coffee outlet are NOT able to enjoy the real of Expresso ...cos
... they wanted to be seen by others or killing time or to spend time to so called "enjoy" the coffee....

the problem with these capsules is

a) beans aren't freshly ground
b) dont get to choose coffee blends

i've heard the N90 can hit >16 Bar though. but without fresh coffee , what's the point?

Well in my own personal opinion Espresso does not give me the "kick" anymore..I tried to have 6 shots in the morning..I'm a barista in Starbucks myself.Does not have the effect on me..but somehow the caffeince will just makes ur heart pounds faster..And yeah it always depends on who makes ur cup of Espresso in Starbucks. But now being some stores having the new machine..The quality of a cup of espresso seems more consistent but are more dilluted compared to the La Marzocco machine.

The action where people actually spit out the coffee without drinking is called cupping. It's a process for coffee conneiseur to taste and test the quality of a particular coffee.

A espresso serving size that is usually measured in shots, which are between 25 and 30 ml (around 1 fluid ounce) in size.

espresso also to becoming the base for other drinks, such as lattes, cappuccini, macchiato.

espresso contains approximately three times the caffeine content of regular brewed coffee (1.700 g/l (50 mg per fluid ounce) of espresso versus 0.50-0.75 g/l (14-22 mg per ounce) for brewed coffee). Compared on the basis of usual serving sizes, a 30 ml (1 fluid ounce) shot of espresso has about half the caffeine of a standard 180 ml (6 fluid ounce) cup of American-style coffee, which varies from 80 to 130 mg.

besides starbucks and coffee bean, u can try Illy coffee!

Never thought there's some activities in my old thread.

Well, it's been while since I had the time for a nice long coffee break in the cafe. What I got everyday are Nescafe or ready-made coffee in my office cafeteria.

Last time Starbucks served an iced espresso before (dont remember the name).... they put 2 cup of espresso into the shaker thingy( the container that bartender use to make cocktail and what not.. pardon my lack of knowledge...) and ice cubes then shake it and pour the drink into a small cup for you. Even the straw is way smaller than the regular you see these days...

I tried it once and it's quite good for me... though i think they do add a little syrup into the drink.... so it's no the pure espresso plus it's iced drink not the hot tongue-burning drink eh... i remembered that drink cost around Rm 7-9... anybody tried that before?

By the way anybody seen the korean drama 'Coffee Prince'? Do we have that kind of coffee house shown in the drama here in Malaysia? The one that serve the latte with the different foam shape thingy? I know Gloria Jeans do that kind of foam shape but im not very fond of they coffee actually..

I've tried espresso once, and frequently adds more espresso shots on my caramel macchiato. i can only take as much as 5 extra shots in a venti, while my friend managed to add 6 extra shots to it.

yeahh, we're coffeee crazy that way.

butt, the right way to drink an espresso is to finish it straight after it is being served, i.e less than 30 seconds. that's why most caucasions will wait for their espresso at the 'delivering counter', cause they will drink and go.

the wrong way is to take time and enjoy it. you can't really enjoy it because after 30 seconds it will become 'stale coffee'. not much difference on the physical of it, but tastewise, it will be different.

Espresso cant drink? haha..well for me i 50/50 agree lo...hahah. When i just started to learn about coffee basics.. that ws wat i think oso, but then i learned about it and started to accept it. smile.gif When on one learning session with my boss, i took like 5 shots of espresso, one after the other... to be shown how the taste can be affected... tummy does feel a bit itchy tho..hahha.. that's my highest record, 5 shots in a short period of time. Miss those days..hahahaa

Well, erm. to giv u a rough idea... its like u put about 3 teaspoon of nescafe and mayb like 3 tablespoons of hot water... stir it well, no sugar no nothing.. juz plain nescafe and water.. then u drink.. it's something like that la... but the exact taste of espresso and nescafe would not be the same.. juz giving u a rough idea/heheh. correct if i'm wrong guyz.

let's see... one shots, one mouth, one go and all the way;
one smell of it, one look at it, you can tell right away if the coffeebean is good, if the barrister is good.

without sugar, without hesitation
espresso is for those who's on the go
sadly those who's cheap in general will order espresso coz it's cheap
only to be shitfaced when they try not to waste it

thick and rough, strong and kicking, these are the character of a small cup of it.

if it's thin, taste icky, the bean is bad, the barrista know nothing about coffee, well sucks to be us where people dont exactly know how to sit down and enjoy, what exactly is the Art of such Brew.

[edit] record 9 shots. twice perday, it totally f***ed up my bio clock and i stayed awake for 36 hours and it was FUN kekekkekekekkekekekkekekke
note: my avatar is a coffee mug

Everyday I take double shot + Cigarette before leaving to work. I feel fresh entire day working for 9-10 hours . I bought espresso bean from starbuck and
grind everyday at home. More save!

For me Starbucks has better espresso bean rather than the other because its taste bitter, strong and extra bold. I prefer not to use sugar because it will affect the taste of bean itself. However you can choose to add some non sugar ice cream with your espresso.

and then drink it in one go
and that's it

if it's salty and something else? i doubt it's good coffee

p.s. drink it hot

Nice blog you have there. I'm prefer more on Espressamente than Segafredo. Have you try Illy coffee at The Westin? Their cappuccino are amongst the best.

Wondering what brand of coffee is good here in Malaysia ?

Have gone thru a "canister" of Nescafe regular, Nescafe Gold, IndoCoffee, and some designer Italian coffee since getting back. Not bothering with the Italian one since I got it in a hamper and havent seen it on shop shelfs here before.

I realize some take coffee drinking as an "art" , but I would really like to try some local brands here.

kopi luwak is cat shit. inconsistent but very expensive. 1 cup not cheap at all and doesnt require some funky machine to make.
the kopi u see there in other posts is expensive to cover the cost of the machine nia.
kopi luwak cat shit is the most expensive shit u will ever drink and doesnt require any expensive machinary to make its price sky high.

go google it. u will shit brix.

btw chinese tea more expensive than kopi.

I'm looking for coffee lovers. I love my coffee to death. Every morning I'll have a cup of El Borbollon pressed with a cafetiere http://www.elborbollon.com/

It is by far the best coffee I've tasted in my life. Everything I want in a cup is there - low (or none) acidity, dark roast, strong aroma, hint of cocoa flavours and an amazing aftertaste.

I am in Bristol, UK and there is an amazing coffee roaster here (Two Day Coffee - as the name implies, roasts are never more than 2 days old) that sells speciality beans (10% of the world's coffee consumption is speciality beans, the remaining 90% is commercial crap). This includes the Cup of Excellence, an award given to the best grown beans (can be quite expensive too! - about £2.95 per 100g). Thankfully the El Borbollon is cheaper at £2.50 per 100g.

What's the point of this thread? I'm looking for local roasters in Malaysia (KL/PJ) that imports and roasts beans of this quality.

Also, looking for coffee addicts.

Have a great day.

I'm just an addict. Coffee addict, that's it. I love brewed gourmet coffee but don't have the luxury to grab one everyday. For that, I usually settle for RTD (ready-to-drink) coffee to curb my addiction.

I even have a coffee blog for god sake. But, I reckon I need more coffee tasting session.

@hiphopstar, your blog doesn't have anything that interests me sad.gif

@vermins, I haven't really bothered to find out, but Kopi Luwak isn't in the cupper's dictionary. There's not a big fan base and it seems more like something of shock value rather than a speciality bean.

Coffex imports coffee. i know this coz it's my friend's organization.

illy's coffee machine costs around 5-10k and that is somewhat their average mid level range. all those gold plated this and that can go up to 50k per machine which is like ridiculous. if i wanted something gold plated it would be on my body.

How can a company claim to provide specialty coffees when they are not specialty coffees?

Guys, I'm currently paying RM42 for a tiny bucket of dark roasted illy beans. I assume this can be cheaper? I need beans for my grinder machine. Any ideas on where to go for good coffee beans? (also affordable).

Bought Trung Nguyen Coffee beans/powder total in USD 18 for 1kg as following when I was in Hanoi early January this year, very nice and highly recommended.

a) 500g Espresso - Coffee bean ( http://www.trung-nguyen-online.com/about-espresso-coffee.php )
b) 250g Creative Five - Coffee powder ( http://www.trung-nguyen-online.com/about-c...bica-coffee.php )
c) 250g Legendee - Coffee powder (Kopi Luwak) - the highest grade (grade 10) of Trung Nguyen range ( http://www.trung-nguyen-online.com/about-legendee-coffee.php )

I was lucky to get cheaper price compared to listed price in the web, I bought the above via hotel receptionist. If you have a chance to Hanoi, don't miss this opportunity to get few pack of coffee bean/powder back.

if you want to taste good quality coffee, you can find it only at these 2 special place espressamente and the coffee ritual. others are just too commercialised.

Agree.

Like Coffee Ritual, Typica Cafe in Shaw Parade also has syphon coffee and single origin blends, but is much pricier. They have some funky variations like 'pandan latte' and 'Soyaccino'; and some nice cakes too:

http://typicacafe.blogspot.com/
GL-08, Ground Floor,
Shaw Parade Plaza,

Also, try Haikara-Style Bakery & Cafe in SS16 for charcoal-roasted coffee (RM7) and Jamaican Blue Mountain (RM17):

Is the Blue Mountain really that good? A lot of hype circulating around those beans. I don't see my roaster carrying it.

I find these days Starbuck business not so good anymore. They are not so crowded anymore when compare with CoffeeBean. Maybe I observed at the wrong times?
Nevertheless, I prefer Coffeebean for the food, especially their Break'O'day.

Have you tried the Laos mountain coffee?
Some people like thick and dark, other light and smooth but all of them insist and swear by the aroma of freshly brew coffee!
You know sometimes even if same product from the same factory, the coffee also taste different!
There are a lot of factors affecting it like different handling and storage which is why different Starbuck also have different taste! sweat.gif

only black coffee u taste different in defferent starbucks coz its different coffee beans for brew of the day.. just ask the barista what coffee is brew of the day?
unlike americano its espresso with hot water..

besides starbucks using 2 types of equipment:-
1) La marzzoco - old school coffee machine taste stronger & prefer by most barista.. Attached Image
2) verismo - all new sbux is using it.. taste not so strong on ur latte.. extra shot of espresso is recommended.. for tall just said to barista " would u mind to add extra shot for my latte" after u paid obviously..Attached Image

Oddly, I didn't ask after paying. Normally, they will give it (extra shot) to you for free when you buy tall (small) size.

yea most of the time we'll give extra shot.. but no everyone likes it.. new barista will be a bit hesitant..
just smile n talk nicely to us we'll hav to give u what u want... hehe..

even though i work in starbucks.. i still drink old town white coffee too sweet at times.., kluang station is great too full body, high acidity..
early morning usually go for black coffee for the kick..

coffee house is with full service as in with waiters and kitchen for food..
where else cafe is simple coffee on the go.. pastries/cakes.. self-service..
but in general term its all call cafe..

Hi,

I know alot of people like coffee from Starbuck, Coffeebean etc. But I never have like the taste of it. For me, It too 'garing' and have taste of "hangus' and not that strong (pekat). I end up taking Nescafe in office and Kopi kangpung at my home. At my Office, we got the coffee maker which use 'strong' coffee bean but the taste is just the same with starbuck.

I like bitter but sweet plus strong smooth taste. How do I choose coffee bean as I see Starbuck offer wide range of coffee bean on the rack.

I know there is one for my liking as I always fall in love with coffee in the Concorde Shah Alam.

Would anybody advice me?

hey there.

i doubt you can find coffee blends that are sweet in nature to be honest - unless you add in the sugar yourself.

however, do consider starbucks' morning roast - its smooth and gentle, i love making my own lattes with them for lazy saturday breakfast. if youre unsure, you can always sample the smell - just look around the front-top 3rd of the coffee pack, and look for the tester. press the back side of the tester gently, put your nose close to it, and smell em hard. haha

There is a coffee house aka coffee bar in Malacca.

It's called Khaki Coffee Bar.
Serve only high grade coffee beans hand selected, and if you are lucky, you can see the roasting of bean live. smile.gif
The place is quite small, but it's a relaxing place to chill out.

Been there for 3 or 4 times already.
They even sell the roasted beans (which they roasted themselves)

Location: Opposite Carry-on steamboat, or near to Pure Bar in Malacca wink.gif

Price is reasonable, and you can talk to the owner. The shop is quite new and is setup especially for coffee enthusiast.

Never thought that my old thread has been revived until this extent.

Well, after these few years taking all sorts of caffeine drinks (mostly from office coffee machine / nescafe machine), I recently found my love in double or even double double espresso, pure black thumbup.gif

Once in a while, I would mix some milk for smoother experience but pure black is still my favorite now.

Still do not have the chance to get into a decent coffee cafe for different experiences, but the one in Malacca sounds interesting.

May I recommend this place? It's new and recently I had a ristretto there and it's really nice. Although ambiance is not a perfect 10, they do make some special coffee.

Had a wasabi espresso last Sunday, and the kick, (*imagine from 12am to 3am you're turning on the bed left and right laugh.gif )

Nevertheless, the kick of wasabi espresso is good enough to awake you (drank around 4/5pm, but kick last)

Their garlic bread is not bad either.

Where do you think has the best coffee in KL? I'm talking about independent coffee places, please don't even mention Coffee Bean, Starbucks, Gloria Jean's here, cos they're crap chain coffee.

I personally love the Espresso Blend in Antipodean Bangsar, beans sourced in Indonesia and roasted on site in this cafe right smack in the middle of Telawi.

Any other worth noting coffee places to share?

Personally I don't really fancy chain stores coffee. Although I might patronise them for the ambience and wifi but the coffee was never the reason. Being a local, I still prefers our 'Kopi-O kau'. The ones served in Pak Hailam in Low Yat is not bad. Also in Tanjung Malim, Yik Mun used to serve nice local brew but since they are near the R & R on PLUS, they are still OK with their dumplings. icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, typical china beng kopitiam serves good kopi.

I like those small stalls by Jalan Pasar. Used to drink it when i used to work part time for my dad there.

I like local kopitiam coffee as well but it's getting harder and harder to find in KL. Still a few good places in Ipoh though.

So far, I heard two places that serve good coffee; Ristretto (Mont Kiara) and Real and Wholesome (a.k.a. RAW) (Wisma Equity, Jalan Ampang). I personally have yet to try them. biggrin.gif

So long as the espresso drinks come with Latte Art and the temperature of the steam milk is just right..
I can safely say its made with Love <3 and its worth a drink!

Go for the local stores first... chain is more like a last resort when you really have no idea and would like a safe generally accepted fallback.
Personally think Gloria Jeans is good.

All coffee lovers,
I am doing a little survey here to hopefully grow a business from it

To find out:

Does the majority of people take coffee daily?
How do you like your coffee? Mild?Kau?
Types of coffee/coffee beans you prefer?
What is the most tastiest coffee you ever tried? Unlike the conventional Starbucks,Coffeebean kind.

Espresso is a based for every cafe drinks like cappucino, latte, machiato, shakerato, caffe vinnese and much more. It plays such an important role in a cup of coffee. Same goes to your milk. U will need years of experience to froth the right milk. Im using marzocco coffee machine. U will have the best opinion but not the best coffee. U will just keep looking for a better1. :-p

hey guys, talking about the coffee houses...
gosh, i just came back from Pacific Coffee in Puchong geh~ the services by the employees were so horrible. They were so rude.

I merely ordered an Americano coffee and I used the usual plastic stirrer and guess what the plastic stirrer melted. OMG~
I told the employees about this and they just ignore me and then i even asked them at what temperature they served the Americano coffee at, and they said they served to me at 120 degree Celsius. =.=

here's a facebook note about it >.< I'm not going back to Pacific Coffee house anymore. Starbucks is still the best for me.
