Its not really a problem with finding a room, just finding one which fits your budget and location of preference is the main issue everybody faces.Working Life in Singapore V3a, new version...

QUOTE(reign226 @ Aug 16 2010, 09:46 PM) Adding to this, my own company (shipyard) is also filled with Malaysians. When u ask any singaporean working here, they will say life in shipyard SUCKS, many are just there for the experience or just to get the money, then everyday complain about the stuff they have to deal with. Well, the sucky part is getting there on time at 7.30, so one wonders what time you have 2 wake up, and then wait for company transport. But the bonus is very good btw. If your the project engineer, you just sit at the office and ask the foreman to report to you most of the time while you just check paper work. Once in awhile if something needs your attention then you venture out into the open. For one thing the working hours is really tiring (730am to 430pm, usually OT till 630pm or beyond) and its a lousy environment (for their standards). I've heard of people commenting that they would never venture to this part of Singapore because they can feel the air being very different. Well, there's a job and somebody's gotta do it... Worst off are the menial foreign workers who toil rain/shine from 7.30 to 6.30 coz they need the OT. Shipyards and some refineries in jurong dont even provide basic drinking water for those workers. So far the only which does is sembawang. The rest drink from corroded pipes which look like from the 80's. Plus they have seperate bathrooms, like those for whites and blacks. |

QUOTE(reign226 @ Aug 17 2010, 06:01 AM) Usually wake up around 530am, then go to office sleep haha. AFAIK, the PJE in my company all complain...they have to go on site, attend VSCC, commissioning meeting, etc. N as PJE you have to have a general idea of what's going on if not kena shoot by your superior if anything happen. Big responsibility. Engineering better...sit in office unless got site issue hehe. But that's why PJE paid higher...if not they will just quit. Keppel also provides drinking point and also open toilet. Pee while looking into Jurong Island at 100ft above sea level =P. But yea life is definitely tough for them. I used to do some jobs for shipyards but keppel treats contractors like dirt. Shifted to overseas, offshore, opl and refineries. Better pay without the bullshitTampines ah...quite far as I stay in Lakeside, but where to play? I guess as long as in Green Line it should be OK. My friend told me CC you have to book 2 weeks in advance. Where you staying? I know CC got badminton courts but not sure about tennis. Usually only see those in high-class condos. =P |

QUOTE(Lester1987 @ Aug 17 2010, 11:37 PM) the best way to get a cheap and nice room is use ur friend's network. Don't you have any friends or relative in Singapore? I am sure if you rent from a friend's relative or your relative's friend, you can get cheaper than market rate room. Saving agent fee is one thing. A fussy landlord in singapore is almost a given.Just like mine. Common room in Sembawang, All in fees only $400 monthly. i got a 10mb Singtel line to use also. somemore my friend's aunty will clean my room for me. Its actually a win-win situation for both owner and tenant. When you were referred by your friend to his relative, it means that your are a good tenant so the owner wouldn't have to worry that they will get a bad tenant and as a tenant, you don't have to worry that the owner is fussy bcoz definitely the owner will give face to your friend not to make life difficult for you. Most importantly, both of you can safe on agent fees. Added on August 17, 2010, 11:43 pm QUOTE(woshikurt @ Aug 17 2010, 10:25 PM) Hi all, AMK couple for 600 is value for money for that particular area unless its a co-opt residence.Does anyone got a common room for rent? I'm looking for common room in bedok/AMK.... A couple will move in... budget 500-600... thanks! This post has been edited by crapp0: Aug 17 2010, 11:43 PM |

QUOTE(wseng @ Aug 30 2010, 01:59 PM) Hi everyone, Thats the reality of the typical singaporean. Its how they have been brought up.I'm currently going to move out of my place in Clementi. Thinking wanna get a whole unit to share with some of the forumers here. Very fed up of staying with owners... too calculative. I'm looking for possible locations around clementi / jurong east / or areas nearby. I'm still looking. Location is not too much of a constrained. |

QUOTE(tailtwist @ Aug 31 2010, 10:06 AM) Well i dont really agree with that....so far i've been staying with 2 different landlords....both of them aren't that calculative... Then your in the minority, rather then the majority. If you know any service staff, they will tell you singaporeans are very finicky, just ask any SIA staff who flies the HK route, if they could they would avoid them at all cost.On a lively note, indian passengers would order whiskey with either water or soda, and "one" ice while bobbing their head left to right. QUOTE(wlcling @ Aug 31 2010, 06:18 PM) my 3 landlords were pretty good. Not everybody is so fortunate im afraid.my first one sometimes bring me out & rest of tenants for dinner. Money-minded when utilities shoot up but generally know how to "chou-yan" la. my second one bought some extra furniture for me to use without me asking, also let me cook, etc my third one, i don't know much since i rented the whole unit, but she every time come collect rent will bring fruits. She also pays for small things like changing bulb, locks, etc, even though in contract its stated that below $50, tenant bears the costs. So just as how landlords can chose who their tenants are, I guess you just need to know how to choose your landlords too I've met my fair share of landlords which aptly fit the description of the "typical" singaporean. They remind me of scrooge mcduck. There was this fat landlord who wanted to rent a room out of the three bedroom apartment and the landlord slept in the living room coz that persons excuse is that the rental money is her income. and like most typical landlords, you can only use the washin machine once a week, lights out at 11pm and if you have a pc, you have to goto the nearby mcdonalds to leech their electicity supply since she wont tolerate you sucking up the PUB bill, even though its "supposed" to be inclusive of rental. I heard gay landlords arent that bad if they dont hit on you. This post has been edited by crapp0: Aug 31 2010, 09:55 PM |

QUOTE(darkages @ Sep 1 2010, 09:31 AM) LOL!!! Read that part too. One fella mentioned that singapore is not a chinese province but oddly enough whether your in beijing or ang mo kio, it feels the same due to the people there. If you can get the break down of that statistics from Singapore Department of Statistics, then we will talk. Added on September 1, 2010, 2:25 pm QUOTE(yokatasan @ Aug 31 2010, 10:12 PM) Its not hard to find a room. The only prob is price, location and whether you have a lemon of a landlord. On another note, theres an increase of allowance for NS personnel. Not that it would matter to some NS fella's, i know a group of singaporean who have yet to serve on day of reservist duty and they are very proud of that fact and boast to me about it. They usually escape duty by paying a doctor to write a letter informing the army that the fella has some mental ailment or nervous breakdown. And the army never counter checks this and lap up the lie. This post has been edited by crapp0: Sep 1 2010, 02:31 PM |

QUOTE(seantang @ Sep 5 2010, 10:23 AM) True. It is unfeasible for the singapore government to do a background on every single PR to see of they have property in other countries or in their own country. They rely on the "fear factor" that they have put in place and sentences as a deterrent. If the singaporean cant even detect reservist escapees in their own midst, what more of doing background checks on foreigners asset overseas? |

QUOTE(Nokia convert @ Sep 5 2010, 10:17 PM) I'm currently applying design engineer jobs in singapore. Can anyone tell me the salary range for a mech engineer (degree) with 2 years exp? I tried google it but this bit of information proved to be hard to find. Need assistance from forumers here to know the situation on the ground. How good are you at autocad and are you familiar with the autocad derivative software called safenet?I prefer to have some figure in my mind before I go for interview as it will help me when I'm negotiating for a better renumeration package. Thanks in advance! Beers on me if I am successful. |

QUOTE(Nokia convert @ Sep 5 2010, 10:38 PM) Very familiar with it. In fact, I did a lot of 3D fabrication drawings for my previous employer using Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks. My particular software isnt stress analysis but corrosion mapping and thickness gauging software for corrosion risk assessment. Coz i know a company headhunting for people who know how to use this software out of the box.Totally not familiar with safenet. However, I do have extensive knowledge in stress analysis softwares such as Ansys 12. |

QUOTE(Nokia convert @ Sep 5 2010, 11:22 PM) My previous job scope covers mainly structural designs for cranes and hydraulic systems. Thus my exposure to corrosion mapping was very limited. However, that sounds kinda interesting and I will read more on it when I'm free. Oil and gas/marine sector. What industry is the company you mentioned coming from? Kinda curious about it. Cranes usually do load test analysis to check stress analysis on areas prone wear and tear. Corrosion mapping is usually done on ship structures, pressure vessels, chemical tankers, piping etc. The discovery channel had a segment on piece of equipment that i have witnessed on the field which was a very efficient and time saving method for corrosion mapping, too bad it cost a bomb. |

QUOTE(nicvoo @ Sep 6 2010, 03:05 PM) yup same Thats coz your job requires you to have your passport on hand. Most ppl job here dont require a passport to get around in singapore when the work pass is sufficient. Except for getting a mobile line for some odd reason since the work pass is similiar to a passport for normal administrative purposes, donno why getting a mobile line is the exception.go m1 go bank formal stuff if u r on ep or spass jus bring along ur passport. went to a data landing station for a project meeting insist for my passport in the end i didnt get to go in even when the facility manager vouch for me lol... from tat time onwards any secured facility meeting i always bring my passport. in msia foreigners purchasing sim cards are asking for passports if u r local your IC would do. the way u guys whining is as if its a crime to ask for your passports when its a requirement as u r a foreigner. iirc if u hav the old EP without the pic theres a clause stating u need to bring along your passport together with the ep for identification purposes not sure the new one has it |

QUOTE(shanelai @ Sep 7 2010, 11:09 AM) Since people usually use their IC or work pass to sign up, why the requirement of a passport when a foreigner who is working in singapore would be given a work pass as his/her identification card to replace the passport. |
