Hi all, I read somewhere if to apply CC in Singapore, those under employment pass will need at least SGD60K to qualify, is this correct?

Thanks.

Thanks Alex. Seems like the requirement is still high for me... Just curious is there any Free for Life CC in SG?
Anyway I don't think it is feasible to use Msia CC in SG right?

Generally if you are a non-native in a country, applying cc over there can be a daunting task. Expect higher income requirement, stricter paperwork, local address and proof of employment, duration of stay in country, etc. You can't really fault them ... too many defaults and people who abuse the system. I have encountered this many times ... when the foreigners leave the country, they 'forget' to pay the last cc bill which will run into the thousands.

In SG generally everyone there cancels and reapply for new card to avoid AF. I'm unaware of FFL cards in SG.
And if you are using a non-local credit card in a foreign country ... there's always the conversion + admin fee which makes it slightly more expensive. Still sometimes it still works better to your benefit as the money changer rates are worse off. In some countries, money changers charges additional conversion fees - many Malaysians unaware of this as our local money changers don't work this way.

Thanks Hye. From first page, for overseas trans I see MBB charges 0.5% while Alliance is 0%?
I also recalled someone mentioned SCB VI rewards you more for overseas spending, is this correct? Any other CC that rewards better for overseas spending and do not need high income requirement? Sorry for asking this again as I know someone asked this before, just that I could not find this info in first page.

No problem.
It is a good question to answer and it is not those questions that I dislike.
Yes ... you are right about MBB and Alliance. Plus although MBB charges 0.5%, many has reported that their exchange rates is quite good and in some reported they are being charged lower than official forex rates.

SCB VI rewards you 5x or 10x (on yr birthday month) for overseas spending and their CS are definitely better than your MBB CS quality. Cons for this card ... you cannot apply for it anymore even if you meet income requirements (I think it was RM180K) as they now issue it exclusively only to SCB PB customers only. Lack of support for EZ payments (if you like this) vs. MBB among others. Again ... every card has their plus and minus and I think you understand this.

I think for your requirement ... best to go for Alliance. Not so high income requirements, 0% charges for intl spendings. Note your potential shortcomings ... CS so so only, Alliance not well known to give away super CL, gifts redemption (sigh!) and hope you are not fussy about cc payment. (There's always MEPS Interbank transfer)
The next one would be MBB AMEX which give away 5x points but the admin fee for AMEX is the highest ... so I'll avoid it if I were you.

* I always laugh at those who just started using cc when they say don't want to pay Interbank fees which are RM2. In early 2000, they are RM5. You want to save on RM2 but don't mind spending petrol and parking to go to the bank. Even walking to the bank is an opportunity fee ... I used to skip lunch just to pay my bills, now I do it @ night from the comfort of my home.
*
Thanks again Hye.
Probably will try to apply for SG debit card first. Unless I cannot get any SG DC or CC then only consider to get Alliance CC. My income is less than 40k so all those platinum or higher end CCs are out of my reach tongue.gif

I'm currently using Amex Gold CC and so far it serves me well except for the poor CS... since it has highest charges for overseas usage, I probably keep this as a backup card for use in Msia.

Anyway, I'm one of the person who's not willing to pay for RM2 IBG fees. It all depends on how we organize our schedule & activities, we might save $ and time.
I don't like to purposely spend my time and petrol just to pay bills. I have bank account for CC I'm using and I'll keep a certain amount of $$ to pay for my CC. The only thing I need to do is physically transfer money from 1 bank to another bank, which I only do so when it is convenient for me.

If you have a premier account from HSBC Malaysia, it will be easier to get a HSBC cc in Singapore if you work there.
*
hehe, I'll need at least another 3-4 years to be "qualified" for HSBC Premier Account laugh.gif

QUOTE(alexwsk @ May 9 2010, 03:19 PM)
i guess you can always go for debit card then although I'm not too sure bout dc in SG
i normally use US debit card while I'm in US, though nowadays i'm using my PBB cc coz it's just short term plus lazy to buy paypal funds

unless you get paid in that country's currency, else no point using their cc/dc
i assume you'll be working in SG for the near future
*
Yes I'm planning to work in SG in near future. Hence I'm checking around to see if I'm able to apply my current "spending/payment pattern" in SG.
Thanks for the suggestion. Debit Card is another option for me too icon_idea.gif Gonna do some research for cash rebates cards when I have the time.

Oh ya, kockroach from SG Working Life forum shares this link to me, HSBC Plat CC requirement for foreigners is only SGD40K... seems quite low if compared to Msia.

HSBC has just launched a new credit card today. It's called HSBC Advance VISA Platinum and is actually a complimentary card. HSBC Advance is a current account and replacement to HSBC PowerVantage. It is a lot like HSBC Premier in many ways, some of the benefits include the use of Global View and free Global Transfer between your local and overseas HSBC accounts (capped at US$10,000 for HSBC Advance and US$100k for HSBC Premier) which was previously available only to HSBC Premier customers. You need only an initial deposit of RM20,000 to open this account and the HSBC Advance VISA Platinum will be mailed to you in the next few weeks.

i see.
btw, if i cancel before the anniversary date, i wont be charged RM50, right?
So is it possible to apply for another cc, then cancel before the date, then repeat process with another bank?
*
If you apply new CC, bank will charge u RM50 immediately when you get your new card... there is no way to avoid the RM50 tax unless the bank waive it for you.
The only way to avoid "paying" RM50 is to apply for CC that gives "cash reward" for new approved card (after met certain conditions) to offset RM50 tax, then use it for 10-11 months, cancel it and apply another card with cash reward... but do note you still need to pay RM50 from your pocket first...

You will have to apply for the HSBC Advance first. I suppose they just expect you to make the deposit at their branch someday when you go to get your HSBC Advance ATM card.

Anyway, if you open the HSBC Advance online, you'll see a message that you'll be applying for the HSBC Advance VISA Platinum at the same time (see below).

[attachmentid=1687994]

And the account maintenance fee won't come into play until 1st January 2011.

HSBC Advance VISA Platinum Credit Card = free annual fee, but with RM50 tax right?

I have the same situation as well but I know why.
I have several cards with SCB and the bank followed the anniversary month of the very 1st card I had with them. Over the years, I have changed cc products and although they are not applied in the same month of the 1st card ... all my cards with SCB use that month (1st card).

Well ... generally the cc anniversary should correspond with the expiry month of your cc. Only in few cases would it differ.
*
I had the same case with my Amex Gold CC. It followed my Visa Petronas card aniversary.
