@naughtyz I'm the wrong guy to ask since I've never change my display for 5 years+... but to me, good display are Eizo or NEC pro line. But those cost more than a Mac. Anyway I refer to MacWorld for some lead. Then head over other sites for some personal reviews (in forums) or better, test a demo unit at showroom if possible. If you are on tight budget, the price range will do the choice for you rather easy. @tabs, no hard drive will last forever. Backups is the key. Eventually all drives will fail one way or another. If you prefer retail drives, where it come pre-fitted (casing and hard disk), I love the newly refreshed Western Digital Passport Studio for Macs. in a nutshell, firewire's just like the usb connection on your external hdd. it's a medium for your machine to read/write onto the external hdd.
some prefer firewire because it does not go through the cpu first unlike usb, hence if you're transferring large files it puts less load and is able to sustain it's speed throughout the process whereas usb fluctuates.
codicil*
for normal usage, usb would suffice. but if you could find a good deal on firewire 400/800 equipped devices, well yeah :)

@wei Indeed the both display you mention earlier is much much more over the budjet, today i bought mini display port to DVI port and connect to Samsung SyncMaster 931BW and i found that the brightness is less even i put it up to the maximum (100 %). Is this happen to all Samsung Display? (i know you are the wrong guy to ask...but anyone who know some info plz share ya ) here the problem (As you can see the brighter differences ) This post has been edited by naughtyz: Oct 20 2011, 02:28 AM Attached thumbnail(s)

@naughtyz - firstly you could do a minimal brightness "tweak" via display calibration. if that proves to be unsatisfactory, try giving shades a go. http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades

I know shades is rather ok to overcome "over brightness" where it dim the screen further than Apple's brightness control. Never know it can boost brightness...

Cheap and nice SIPS LCD. LG IPS236V, Dell 2312 and one more Asus one, I forgot the model. RM600-650. I believe they all use the same LG panel.

I know you can use it when on AC power, but when on battery? you must connected to power if you want the to use it with lid close. no other way. mine once inserted in the dock, i wake the screen using the bluetooth keyboard/magic mouse clicks. at first i was afraid about heat issues but not anymore. when my son was born i was away for 1 week in the hospital & remotely access my macbook using my iPad with no problem.

Getting Started

|
Anyone out there can share their experience using the display unit other than Thunderbolt display and HDTV? I plan to buy a good LED monitor to replace my HDTV since it's advisable to get one with IPS panel when using Mac. Thunderbolt display too pricey for me.any recommendation? anyone has use LG LED 23' monitor (IPS236V) with their MacMini 2011? is it comparable/near to Thunderbolt display in term of quality? I also plan to get a new wireless headset since my current one (Sensonic) seems not compatible. any suggestion?
