hi am new here =D

I bought a bag of eukanuba puppy small breed as it was recommended by the petshop. After reading up on it, only realise that it is very 'meh'.

Should I buy another better brand and mix it or switch later only when the eukanuba bag is finishing ? Just open the bag.. like very wasted to throw =(

I actually felt quite pressured into buying.. I told the sales guy I heard eukanuba not good.. but he said this is good blah blah blah, puppy shud eat this, its complete and affordable.. Kena CONered lol (my prev doggies all don't eat kibbles, they take real meat & rice, so kira kibble noob)

dunno consider lucky its only 7.5kg pack and not the 15kg one =/

I'm planning to switch over to Avoderm and/or Artemis in future so I guess I'll go ahead and get a pack to mix.

Yah, just welcomed my MS home last week, though he not so puppy anymore at 7 months+ XD;;

Alpha Lamb, Chicken and Rabbit sounds interesting =O Which petshop in KD can you get it from ?

I also called a few places to ask about Artemis, one shop in PJ told me Artemis supplier no longer brings in Artemis liao =(

I went and bought a bag of 13.6kg Avoderm Chicken & Brown rice to mix with the eukanuba puppy.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to store the kibbles so they stay dry, fresh and clean ? The eukanuba bag got ziplock, but Avoderm got nothing.. dare not open til I find a proper storage..

My boy who is on Eukanuba puppy small breed poos a lot and usually quite stiff. He takes a while to do his business too =(

Can't wait to switch him over to AD as soon as I can find a proper container or way to store the kibble.

Fiber will cause increase in poo freqency and amount. If you want less trouble for this, try holistic (grain free) and super premium food. I am currently feeding Orijen. The only problem with Orijen is, the poo is very smelly. Otherwise, frequency and amount is less compare to high fiber food.

Yeah, I notice he poo more compare to when he was on NutriSource. Sometimes it feels like he poo almost the same amount that he eat =(
Now in midst of gradually switching him from Eukanuba to Avoderm =D hope it will help with the poo smell and quantity.

Hi. My puppy is almost three weeks old. He was found behind my house so he's not with his mom anymore. Which brand of dog food should I buy for him? Now I'm feeding him dog food soak with milk.
What type of dog food are you feeding him ? As far as I know they cannot take cow milk as they are lactose intolerant. If you want to give milk, you can try goat's milk. If not, you can soak the kibble in warm water to mush it.

You can consider going for puppy type dog food, try to look for those that has Chicken Meal or Lamb Meal or a named meat meal as first ingredient and the less amount of grain the better.

Currently I'm using Purina but the one for puppy. For milk, I used lactose free milk for it.

Meat as first ingredient....Any good brand for it? smile.gif
You can browse http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ to check ^^
Good brand also depend on your budget and location (if can find them), please get the best that you can.
Just pls don't go for brands like Pedigree / Alpo / Eukanuba ya. Read the ingredient list carefully and eliminate brands that states stuff like "by-products" or too much grain / corn.

If you not sure what brand he will like, some shops got sample packs that you can let your puppy try, or get a smaller bag and let him/her try first ~

U r absolutely right. There may be more than one constraints like location, budget or probably first pet. I believe all this takes time as everyday is a learning day. Consuming samples surely is a great idea, some vets to have food samples as well. I give my beagle home food, like boiled chicken, poached eggs, carrots, boiled broccoli and he loves green surprisingly smile.gif

Goodday smile.gif

I also don't mind if you feed me like that =P Lucky beagle =3

You may also want to consider switching to lower protein % type kibble.

You can read this :-
http://www.doglogic.com/food&feed.htm

Does your girl scratch her ears or just paws etc? Check if the ears got smell or not and if reddish.

@ fione
If keep scratching may be a few reasons.
1) food not ngam so got itchy / skin problems
2) could be fungus or ear mites etc, good to take to vet for checkup. If not sakit then must be food
3) Check body got ants or anything hiding in fur or not.. sometimes those ants crawl up when they sleeping etc.
4) who knows, maybe bored or don't like / not used to wearing collar

For food, you can also try to get food samples or buy the smallest pack like 1.5kg to try on your girl, sometimes they can be choosy.

Or you can try go for BARF which is raw food, just google, can find a lot lot lot of pages to read. Better to feed this after your girl got all her vaccinations and deworm though.

Don't worry so much =3 If you read my earlier posts, I started with eukanuba *coughcough* Now I switched my boy to Avoderm Chicken :- http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-rev...l-dog-food-dry/
I like most of the ingredients on it even though its quite low on meat content. So to supplment, I feed my boy with BARF on weekends so he can get a balanced diet and also not so boring everytime eat kibble only. But please note, don't mix feeding barf/other food with kibble as the rate of digestion is different.

@ kayvan
you live near the pet lovers bangsar ? Is it the one same row as post office ?

Also how do you feed carrot ? Usually I blend it to smaller bits, but wondering if I can give my boy baby carrot or small carrot as a treat and chew toy =P

Have you always fed your boy with fish based kibble ? Maybe he don't like fish or allergic to fish/potato ? Maybe consider alternative like duck / venison / lamb / kangaroo.

For fishy kibble, Origen 6 fish would be better in terms of fish content is higher than Addiction. Addiction only has Salmon Meal as its only significant fish content and Smoked Salmon on 3rd place. Orijen has fishies listed 8 times, with varying degrees of inclusion.

But do note the protein percentage of Orijen is ~38% vs Addiction's ~24%. Too high protein also not good esp for small breeds.

Other pretty good ones are :-
Petcurean Go Natural Wild Salmon http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_re...duct=2296&cat=3

Naturapet California Natural Lamb Meal & Rice http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_re...oduct=437&cat=4

kayvan >>
The BARF on weekends is me XD;;
I also read that cooked bones not so good for furkids so I give my boy raw.
I just remembered got PetLovers at the carpark there, so odd location haha !

I use eucalyptus oil mix with water and spray everywhere, including some on the back of the neck of my boy. He don't have fleas etc, and I don't want him to start, plus I love the smell of eucalyptus.
Some of the pharmacies carry few brands, usually their box is green.

Nutram looks alright in the anaylsis =)

kayvan >>
you can freeze the raw bones first before giving to your beagle, so the blood will not create a halloween canvas =D

rhika....

u know what? seapark pet supplies sell Orijen 2.5kg for RM 62 and RM 139 for 7kg, but petlovers in bangsar gives me for RM 60 for 2.5kg. As it is I live in KL and i have drive up to PJ, might as well get it from here. I think petlovers is still one of the best pet store I have been to, even the one in ikano, pet safari. Those are some of the greatest pet store... there's one in Taman Megah, Pet Family. I have a fren who workes there named Mary, visit her & she'll give u a good deal... She is a sarawakian too wink.gif
*
True, though I'm concerned about the high protein in Orijen.. don't want my boy to be super active, then I pengsan oredi.

QUOTE(caninelovers @ Jan 5 2012, 02:35 PM)
I am interested to know if anyone tried the Brit Care Salmon and Potato as well.
I had been choosing between Brit Care Salmon & Potato and Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish Formula before I made my decision.
Personally, for Brit Care Salmon & Potato, the first 4 ingredients Salmon, Potato Meal, Ground Rice, dehydrated Salmon Protein had built a very good combination of protein and omega meal for skin and coat. But when comes to the 5th ingredient which is the Poultry Fat (preserved with tocopherols) , I personally thinks that it doesn't make sense when a poultry fat (avian fat it could be chicken fat/duck fat...etc) added into the food.

My dog is allergy to chicken meal, until i found out that Natural Balance L.I.D Sweet Potato and Fish comes into play.
Natural Balance® L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets® Sweet Potato & Fish Dry Dog Food is made with:
Fresh Salmon, Sweet Potatoes, Canola Oil, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed...... etc
They also emphasize on the word L.I.D (Limited ingredient Diet), one premium protein and one highly digestible carbohydrate.

So far, my dog has no problem with NB sweet potato and fish..
*
Judging from the first listed meat ingredients in Brit Care and NB, both the salmon are not listed as dehydrated or meal form, therefore the main ingredient in these two are likely to be the 2nd listed ingredient which is Potato Meal and Sweet Potato (again not listed as meal). For the same price, better to get some other brand with a fish type meal listed as the first ingredient.

I'm buying my little girl with Olive and Salmon fish oil dog foods. She got skin problem currently and not advisible to take other foods. She  seems so skinny also. But she just cannot take other foods beside the Fish oil biscuits ( Kinda expensive to me  blink.gif ). Any dog lovers here know where to get cheaper price out there? Thank you smile.gif
*
What kibble do you feed her besides Olive oil and salmon oil ? If you keep feeding salmon oil, also do keep track of whether any of them got Vit E. Too much fish oil dimishes Vit E, so got to keep a good balance.

thanks kayvan..hm, i stay miri, sarawak..i been survey few pet shop, but mostly brand they carry is the commons one, etc, pedegree, alpo, borsh, my dear dog, royal canin, others brand from korean which the packing wording also korean and Nutram which i did post the ingredient at this forum before..i saw this Orijin at vet clinic when i bring my girl to check up..still thinking should i change her to better protein or just in this Nutram is fine..This brand got lots of packing, even for those sensitive skin & allergy care, but mine one was grain free one..the only one not good is the grain free packing only got 1 size - 1.5kg..no bigger pack..that what me headached..  (http://www.nutram.com/products/index_minibite_brand_DOG_premium_food.html  - puppy).

Between, what is the meaning of AAFCO? i see it at the bottom of ingredient..

Nutram: http://www.nutram.com/products/index_nutra...emium_food.html
*
Fione, stick to Nutram for a month plus first unless you notice she scratch and poo is bad. Frequent change to diet also not good, especially in young puppy or senior dogs as their system won't be able to adapt easily.

Another option is try searching for a list of petshops / vets in Miri and call them up to see if they got other brands, types, size and price then only go make trip to buy =D

QUOTE(adriankhoo153 @ Jan 9 2012, 07:41 AM)
I think he should be ok with Orijen Six Fish cause i use Evo Salmon and Herring treats for his training.
*
Adrian, what is the size of the treats and where to get / price ? I'm using Avoderm Baked treats for my boy now and he enjoys them, but they are huge (about 6.5 X 2.5 cm) and hard to divide =/ Smells super nice though..

Anyway, this is my Snoopy new toy, Kong Wobblers!  rclxms.gif
Now i feed him dinner using this Kong Wobbles. Very nice to see he works hard to get his food and he seems interesting too.  laugh.gif

For Oven-baked there are a few places that has it.

1) Pet shop near Leisure Mall, Cheras, don't remember the name but they have a Peke running around the shop, 3rd or 4th shop from corner lot, that whole row got 3-4 pet shops same block one
2) Nilufar, Scott Garden, Old Klang Road
3) Pet Safari, IPC/Ikano (If I recall correctly)

For Kong, I've seen pink and green ones at random places, usually for puppy. Kong Wobbler spotted in Dec 2011 at Pyramid Pet Lovers Centre and one more place I cannot recall.

*
What type of puppy you have and how much you feed per meal ? 15kg packet can take up to 4-5 months to finish so make sure you store properly / keep half in freezer.

Also, make sure he got all the shots etc before bringing him to the training ^^ Which location training are you going to ?

Pets Wonderland Mid Valley has a range of Kong stuff in, including Kong Classic in various sizes, Kong bones, balls and Tuff Flyer which I wanted, but it is too big for my boy ;_; No Wobbler though hmm.gif

He's having Orijen for large breed puppy since he was 3 months old ! The amount I gave him was according to veterinary is just ok ! Poop are firm !! Any advice ? Is it he cannot absorb the nutrition ?

how often you feed him a day and how active is he ? do you feed treats as well?
Less active doggy don't need so high protein.

overfed ar?.....but he whack all wor....of course sometimes afternoon feeding cannot finish...maybe reduce to 1 scoop each time...

usually should feed by weight and age. And also feed slightly lesser about 5-15% of what the feeding instructions say on the bag depending on your dog's energy level. I feed my boy a bit more than his usual portion if we went out that day for long walk or training etc
