Hey guys,

Need some opinion. Just bought a westipoo (age : 2months ++) and the owner is feeding her ANF. somehow or rather can't find anyone in Penang selling this brand. Hence, she suggested that I try to feed the pup Blackwood Lamb & rice. I've bought the product based on the owner's advice and now wondering is this the right choice. Need some opinion on this brand as I have been hearing mix review. (i'm slowly reading the whole thread; so apologize if it has been posted and answered) Hope someone can help me.

A Westipoo doesnt eat much. I suggest u buy better brand and slow transition it over the old one. I would suggest a grain free dog food. Jes to name a few top brand such as Orijen Six Fish, Acana Pasifica, Annamaet Aqualok, TOTW, Evo and others. You may refer to dogfooadvisor.com to see which is the best quality dog food.

Yup. I want the best for the pup that is why am researching and asking opinion. I heard about Acana as well. Will go look for more info on this brand. I know my local petshop sells acana. But as for the rest, will need time to look into it.

Agreed. Since young u enforced the puppy with good food so later they grow up they will have a well built structure and strong. Last time because of no knowledge i start my dog with not so good kibble (nutriedge  ) so now she is a bit small size n no matter what good food to give her now also no help. Seems like human ma. Luckily my dog is a girl so she stay slim is okay. Haa...(self console   )

M worried cos first time having a puppy (no excuse - i know) so must do homework. I'm worried I pick the wrong food for her. I'm sad to say but petshop nowadays keep pushing their brand or whichever brand they get higher profit margin. So dont know who to trust.

I'm collecting my pup in 3 days. Super excited. Just missing the right selection on food. wub.gif

Sorry ya. One more question, is acana formula suitable for puppies?

Dun worry, u still have much to learn. Keep on researching and eventually u will know what is best for your dog. Petshop will of course try to push whatever brand so that they can get higher profit. So it's up to us to decide. Also vet will push u their sponsored brand such as science plan etc which is quite useless kibbles. Who to trust? Trust yourself and trust dogfoodadvisor.com. Check out their 5 star rated dog food and u will get the best. Of course not all brand available in Malaysia.

Acana have a few range in Malaysia. I recommend you go for grain free Acana which is for all life stages. Of course u can opt for grain food in Acana which is a little cheaper and are for small breed puppy etc, but grain free is still the best to feed your dog. Malaysia only selling Acana Pacifica (fish based) and Acana Wild Praire. (Chicken and fish) for their grain free range. I am feeding my dog Acana Pacifica which he is doing quite well.

Anyway, it's all up to the dog. A super brand can be good for many dog but not yours. U need to find 'suitable' food for you dog as some dog cannot tolerate some ingredient if you know what i mean..

I agree.. After a few research and finally found Orijen. rclxms.gif It's an ever learning process. Hehe.. Hopefully the pup is ok with the food. Hope and pray for the best.

Hi, I'm curious. My 2.5months pup has been on ANF (previous owner feeding her that) and her poop stinks no bad breath. My friends pup (littermate) popp doesn't stinks and super bad breath (on ANF too).

I heard somewhere that poop stinks normally is caused by the food they consume (Pup doesn't eat anything else apart from ANF). Is it true?So want to confirm whether is the food that caused her poop-ie smelly. Is there any reason to panic? I've bought orijin. Should I do the switch asap or wait til about to finish ANF?

You will need to transition the food slowly to orijen, mix a little bit of orijen first then slowly increase the ratio if you pup is doing well.
*
Sorry. Need to re-phrase the question. I still hv around 2 more kg of ANF. Should i slowly mix a bit of orijin (until ANF totally finish) or just you know make the transition and not give ANF to the pup after the transition period?

It's more to I'm concern if ANF is the reason to the stinky poop smell.

Its one of the few 6-Star rated kibbles around BUT am not sure how easy it is to source....

Haven't bumped onto one thus far....
*
There is a shop in Tanjung Tokong, Penang selling TOTW. I've been feeding my pup Orijen but it didnt work well on her so I've switch to Acana and still not really working for her. Hence, wanted to find something else for her

Maybe its hidden somewhere tongue.gif

Which ORIJEN have you been feeding your pup?
*
Orijen for puppy. My pup is 5 month old. Was thinking of annamet but according to the shop assistant it's for adult dog. (can feed but don't recommend). She is recommending me Natural Balance.

Well my pup is just 1 week away from being 4 months old and he is being fed with Orijen Large Breed Puppy and he absolutely LOVES it!!!!!

It depends at times on the breed its being fed to. Some smaller breed might have issues with Orijen due to its 'claimed' high Protein level....
*
Mine is a westie-poodle. She was on Orijen Puppy for 2 months and she was itching like crazy. The doctor says it's not allergic. Then I switch to Acana. Less scratching . Not too sure if it's due to the high protein level. Poo was smelly when she was eating Orijen. Acana - smells better (still smells like poo =D )

Awesome phrase above there mate.... tongue.gif

Anyways, it may or may not be of the Protein level IMHO....

My pup has had itch like a few weeks after going into Orijen diet....one vet told me to change the food....another told me not to worry its just an bacterial infection and prescribed him with some medications - Now, he has no more itch issues....
*
Been to the docs and she said that she doesn't wanna put her on medication for the itch yet. Since it's not too serious. So am monitoring.. haha.. Do you feed your pup supplements? What breed is your pup?

Normally shop will promote the brand they carry n can earn high commission. Annameat is all life stage n not many shop selling because of the price. I went to many pet shops n most of them will only said good abt the brand that they carry. I personally dont like natural balance cos they put potato as their first ingredient which i think is high in carbo low in meat. My two dogs tried before n poo a lot. This is my opinion.
*
Yup.. i do agree that they promote their brand. I just keep insisting I will research and think about it. I've tried Orijen & Acana (don't know if that counts.. cos they are kinda like sister company if I'm not mistaken. But I find it harder to trust shop assistant. sweat.gif But not all is like that..

I got a 4.5 months Shih Tzu, previously was fed with Origen Puppy  nod.gif

Ya, the poo is terrible smelly and soft, hard to clean it, sometime it will stick at her fur as well, have to take bath every few days  rclxub.gif

So far I just fed that for 2 weeks time, but her weight was grow almost 1kg  shocking.gif

I think the protein is too high for it, so I decided to change others brand. whistling.gif
*
It depends on individual. I'll give you an example. My girl Lexy & my friend's pup Otis. Both of them are from the same litter. We feed them the same treats and dog food and also the same supplements.

So far, before switching to Orijen. (was on ANF - by breeder)
Lexy was 3.3kg (Poo smelly and hard) and Otis was 3.4kg (Poo smelly and soft).

After 2 months,
Lexy weights 3.9kg (Poo smelly and soft) and Otis is 4.9kg (Poo not smelly and hard).

And after changing Lexy to Acana, poo less smelly and slightly harder. Otis remain on Orijen as it seems to be working him

What to do she knows i sayang her. Since small she is like that. Now i added salmon oil and nutripet gel in his food and she loves it and now she has a very good appetite after eating the nutripet gel. Sometimes she is so naughty that she purposely left some food behind and hoping that i add in some more nutripet gel for her. And most of the time she WIN. Salute her. notworthy.gif
*
OMG... i must try then. Now meal time is like war time for my girl.. she doesn't wanna eat. Darn picky. I really wanna surrender d. Can i ask how much portion of kibbles and how much of nutripet gel u give her? Every meal?

You do realized that you are encouraging her not to finish her food, right?

Muahaha... kinda feel like it also refers to me.. sweat.gif But I really tak sampai hati. Each time I come up with the strong feeling to the policy "Eat or no food for you til the next meal time" but at the end can't do it.. Haiz.. heart too soft I guess. The only difference is if I add something extra to her kibbles; I will not add on if she finishes the treat and not the kibbles.. that is as far and strict that I can go.. sweat.gif I know.. very bad of me.

I know.  She is my sweet heart and i just want to see her happy. I personally felt that keeping a pet is different from raising up a child.  I dont want to so stress and strict to her and made myself angry all the time.  whistling.gif  She happy and i happy then is okay. icon_idea.gif  this is only my opinion.
*
OMG.. I agree with you. I keep getting angry at myself too.. Haha.. but very heartache when I see my girl don't eat. I just wanna her to be healthy and happy. BTW, tried the way you were teaching me. She really likes it. Hopefully she will continue to eat more. She got a pattern one. So skinny but still eat so little. Thanks rclxms.gif

My vet advise me when changing different source of kibbles (ie lamb to fish or one brand to another), try to change his kibbles slowly. 2 weeks instead of a week. According to her, each dog is different. A bit like playing "ma masak" So start with

Day 1 - 80% (old), 20% (new)
Day 2 - 80% (old), 20% (new) - monitor the stool, if condition ok then proceed to reduce the intake of old
Day 3 - 70% (old), 30% (new)
Day 4 - 70% (old), 30% (new)
Based on what you wrote, he couldn't really digest day 4 & 5. So try to change day 4 & 5 to day 11 & 12?? Hopefully by introducing the food slowly it will be ok. Just a rough idea. Hope you Teddy will be fine soon. Do update us

Weird, I've been feeding my pup with Orijen puppy large and he has been having soft stool since day 1, not sure if it's because of Orijen. hmm.gif

Wonder what other quality kibbles to try?
*
Hehe.. same with mine. Lexy was on Orijen for 2 months and never once she had nice firm stool. But once I change from Orijen to Acana, her stool was much better (not very firm but firmer than Orijen). Currently, she on TOTW and her stool is firm and less smelly.

PG selling 2.2kg (can't remember the exact figure) = RM58 (puppy) for the rest of the flavour I'm unsure but if you give me a week, I'll update you on the pricing). So far in Penang also only found 1 shop selling TOTW
