I'd appreciate if anybody here could tell me A42JV's FPS performance for Team Fortress 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 (at whatever detail settings you're playing at).

QUOTE(markypcs @ Jul 16 2010, 08:51 PM)
For TF2 around 50. I think, but no lag at all.
*
At what graphics settings? Relatively high?

QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Jul 16 2010, 11:54 PM)
Stock clock...
L4D2 runs at everything very high/high with no AA/AF@1366x768 around 60FPS most of times, with heavy smoke and fire on first stage, down till 34FPS...
With overclock, +-10FPS to previous fps...
Need to turn off TurboBoost as there's a kind of 1ms hang frequent... hmm.gif
*
Thanks lee_what2004. What's AA/AF btw?

Anyway right now using a 2008 Vaio VGN-CR35G with a low-end ATI Mobility Radeon™ X2300. All my TF2/L4D2 graphics settings are low 800x600 and usually get 20-30FPS only. Time for an upgrade.

Cool! If it can play MW2 at highest settings, should be pretty good. I use earphones too so speakers loudness isn't an issue for me either.

Now just need to find the place where I can get a good deal. The Asus Shop at MidValley selling for 2899.

don't get it there! very cut throat in terms of pricing imo. get in low yat or digital mall or even online sellers at lyn.
i'm sure you'll get better deals if you look around these places. good luck! oh and i reckon you should upgrade to 4gb ram.
*
I see. I'll check out the shops at LYN then. Thanks!

i read a thread say it will sell 2299 when pc fair

I think it's possible the guy who reported it made a mistake about the model.
When is the the PC fair? Doubt it'll drop RM500 suddenly.

If I buy this laptop, I think will uninstall the Antivirus software. Even though my current laptop's Windows Vista doesn't have any AV software, it's still running smoothly and virus-free. I believe 99% of viruses are infected via users visiting dodgy websites and plugging in infected USB drives.

I thought Nvidia had less driver issues than ATI. hmm.gif

Edit: My main worry now is the Optimus technology used in A42jv.
Seems like it randomly switches between Integrated/Discrete graphics cards.
No manual way to force it to use either one?

Just bought the A42JV. Now downloading Google Chrome and trying to update the Nvidia drivers.

If anybody else has anymore starting tips, do share. smile.gif

I have checked the Add "Run with graphics processor..." Option to Context Menu menu item in the Nvidia Control Panel.

Can't seem to install Steam. Keeps saying "Steam is temporarily unavailable, please try later" even though my other laptop on the same network can connect to it.

Viruses are just programs. They infect you in a few ways
1) Browser exploits
2) Infected USB programs
3) Running suspicious programs
4) "Ahem" videos

For (1) just avoid Internet Explorer and don't visit silly sites. The others I use a Linux machine to open and verify first before I launch in Windows.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I copied my Steam folder (minus the steamapps directory) from my Vista laptop. Now it works! I can connect and see my Friends and Library. notworthy.gif

I blame Valve for writing such a shitty installer. mad.gif

Games I plan to play:
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 1/2
Half Life 2

USB pen drives infect via autorun.inf. Normally this file is safe, but can be modified by virus.

Since only Windows uses that file, if you have another operating system (Mac/Linux), just use it to check if that file is there. Then rename the file to be safe.

Even if you create your own autorun.inf and put it in your pen drive, another program can overwrite it. So no choice to be 100% sure you have to pick a non-Windows system to rename before you insert.

Unfortunately, even folders, hidden or not, can be modified/deleted/moved.

Edit:
New question:
Is the only way to disable the Intel Turbo Boost through the BIOS?

Installation no problems...
Games, L4D2 got some texture problem with the guns...

Played L4D1 and L4D2 last night on my new A42JV, stock drivers, guns looked okay but sometimes the shadows of fires and explosions look really weird.

QUOTE(verdangilte @ Jul 21 2010, 10:56 AM)
why de new driver seem many problem

I haven't installed the new drivers yet. Is it this one 258.96? Do you guys install manually or is there some special program that comes with Asus that automatically updates?
Maybe because Optimus is still new. A lot of old games and stuff don't work with it properly.

Out of curiosity, does anybody here use Driver Sweeper as described here to completely uninstall your old drivers before installing a new one?
