there's no hard and fast rule. everyone here will have their own opinion on which one is best. you just have to try them out and find which one is best for yourself. All of them (distros) have their own strength and weaknesses. As you get better at linux you'll fall in love with one of them.

For me I started off with mandrake, then moved to debian, suse, xandros, yoper and finally settled with knoppix.

welcome to the world of linux!

all three ... if you're looking for immediate support you need to subscribe, then only SUSE is your option.

Myself prefer Fedora Core 3 & Suse 9.2

Have Fun!

troubleshooting time

i bet your knoppix cd still with you. or whatever installer cd that have recue mode.
get boot up with it (let say now we use knoppix cd) and try to have root access.

in knoppix you just have to change to the first terminal .
maybe the CTRL+ALT+F1 will help
(you can change to ay termina using CTRL+ALT+Fx)

in the root's terminal, try to mount the partition where your install your Linux
using full path. afterthat "chroot" to the mount partition. Now you are in suse. change root password by issueing command "passwd". now you have setup the new root passwd. Now time to reboot the pc.

e.g.
1. mkdir /mnt/tmp
2. mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/tmp
[i assume you have installed your Suse in first partition so i use /dev/hda1]
[please use the mount command with the device file or you wont be able to
chroot in knopix]
3. chroot /mnt/tmp /bin/bash
[now you are in suse]
4. passwd
[changing root passwd]
5. CTRL+D
6. reboot
[logout and reboot your pc]

now you wil be able to logon to your linux sytem and also any Linux systtem that physically unsecure ...

however theree is a faster way using GRUB to do this, but i not familiar with suse GRUB, suse costumize it turning to LILO like application.
