Any UniFi users here using homeplug to connect to their IPTV STB? How's the IPTV streaming performance?

I'm considering getting the Aztech HomePlug HL110E but it's kinda pricey. Another concern I have is I'd probably need to plug the homeplugs into extension sockets at both ends (due to lack of wall sockets) and to my understanding, such setup may or may not work well.

Pulling a long CAT5 cable through the ceiling from the D-Link router may be the last resort. sad.gif

Thoughts/suggestions?

Guys, i have some question on the unifi.

what is the actual speed that get from direct download from US/EU servers for Unifi VIP5?
*
I have VIP5. I have done tests with different servers around the world.

The answer is it depends. It's definitely possible to get almost the rated speed for some servers.

Not many AFAIK. I had a user ask me about them on his own setup.. he said he's using it for IPTV streaming (1-to-1) with two homeplugs. SD channels stream fine but HD channels are stuttering and stuff (likely due to bandwidth issues). You also cannot use two pairs of homeplugs to serve IPTV + Internet over the same power wiring, it causes a traffic prioritization issue and IPTV totally gets screwed up even on SD channels.

I don't really recommend using homeplugs for IPTV myself. Best to pull a cat5e/6 cable directly biggrin.gif

Thanks for sharing, rizvanrp.

Is the user that you've mentioned using the 85Mbps or 200Mbps homeplugs? Just curious...

Anyway, I only plan to use a pair of homeplugs exclusively for IPTV streaming.

Ok, TMnet people came to my place and replace my Huawei GPON on the spot, no wonder my IPTV and my VOIP are not working.

What was their response time like? Just curious... Thanks.

bro,

i want to ask about the IPTV. is it really free (that means cover by the monthly package, not paying extras) or you have to top up extra money for it?

does it have the standard free channels like tv1,2,3, 8tv, etc ?

TM provide h/w to connect the unifi to the tv?

thanks bro
*
AFAIK, for VIP 5 and VIP 10, you'll get the basic channels (e.g. TV1, TV2, TV3, 8TV, etc) for free. Need to pay extra for premium channels starting September 2010. For VIP 20, premium channels are included if I'm not mistaken.

Apart from that, there are also pay-per-view video on demand (VOD) channels.

Yes, TM will provide the IPTV set-top-box which connects to your TV.

Hi guys,

Since that the TM technician need to pull the cable to the house, my question are:

1. do they need to hack the house wall to pull the cable into the house?
2. can the modem, equipment, etc be place in the master bedroom where all my computer are?
Still thinking of whether to apply unifi.. worried about the bandwidth cap. sad.gif
*
1. It depends. In my case, there wasn't any hacking. Guess I'm lucky. tongue.gif
2. Up to you. In my case, I told the installers where exactly the equipments are to be placed. smile.gif

bro,

thanks for the answer. so the basic covered by those free-to-air are all covered by the IPTV right? How is the quality of the video / audio ? good ?

if i want to connect to 2 TV how? buy another setup box? in this case both tv can watch different channel at the same time?

another question. if i terminate unified, can i switch to normal streamyx account with same h/w ?
*
1. Yes, those free-to-air channels come without further cost with any VIP UniFi package. For me, the IPTV video/audio quality is good...comparable to standard Astro, if not, slightly even better. Better still, go to TMPoint to see a demo and make your assessment there. tongue.gif

2. Logically thinking, I'm not sure it'll support two different channels at the same time -- more so if at least one of the channels is in HD. Since UniFi's IPTV bandwidth is capped at 8mbps, that's probably enough for only one HD stream.

I also wonder if it's possible to stream 2 different SD channels to 2 STBs... experts here? hmm.gif

3. Should be possible...just re-introduce an ADSL modem to your setup with minor reconfiguration on the D-Link router.

[Update: According to the T&C, TM reserves the right to collect the equipments upon termination of service. Failing which, TM has the right to charge the cost for the equipment reasonably determined by TM.]

He just said it was a 2 port homeplug .. I think with wireless or something. I'm assuming its the 200mbps. 1 unit directly into the wall, another into a power strip.

IPTV only needs 8-10mbps to function properly anyway but this stream cannot have any connection interference.

After reading much about homeplugs, I decided to give the Aztech HL110E 200Mbps homeplugs a try 'cos I really wanted to avoid drilling holes through the ceiling. The homeplugs are just for IPTV streaming.

The result: It works! biggrin.gif There's hardly any stutter even though the homeplug LED light is on amber (green is best). I only have an SDTV though...so I can't say what will happen if HD channel is played on a HDTV. Anyway, HD channels still play on SDTV without a hitch albeit not in HD resolution of course.

The surprising thing is that my home electrical wiring is no where near ideal. The wall wiring is over 30 years old.

On the router side, one homeplug is connected to a surge-protected multipoint socket, followed by a lightning isolator, and followed by a long extension cord before reaching the wall outlet. It's a weird setup but I just simply don't have enough wall outlets. I know for a fact that having a homeplug on a surge-protected socket is not recommended...I was really pushing my luck here... sweat.gif

On the STB end, the homeplug is plugged directly to the wall outlet. Plugging the homeplug to a multipoint socket did make the pairing fail ....guess that was crossing the limits already. tongue.gif

Disclaimer:

I'm not encouraging people to get homeplugs for their IPTV setup but I just want to confirm that the particular model of homeplugs that I am using do in fact work with UniFi IPTV ....at least in my home configuration.

billing date is 1st july. Charges are RM199(biz5) + RM10(admin fee). Nothing else, which is okay I guess. But I'm not happy with paying rm199 just yet because they have yet to provide me additional services that should come with the unifi package  shakehead.gif

The RM10 admin fee..that's a monthly thing?

I tried to log in to the DLink DIR-615 router today but was denied. The password must have been remotely changed?

I should have disabled remote management on the router from the start. mad.gif
