Hi,

I'm using the 5MB business package for small office but the wireless keeps on and off, very unstable. I'm thinking to replace the wireless router but after reading all the thread, still a bit confuse. Hope someone here can help me to answer the below:

1) Can I totally replace the DLink router? If yes, how to do it? Do I need a special wireless router?

2) I understand I can setup the Wireless router in between the DLink and my network, right? Any special Wireless router I need to purchase?

3) For either setup above, do I need to have a router with DD-WRT compatible?

I'm planning to get the Cisco small business grade wireless router, is it ok?

Many thanks in advance.

You can use your own router by using Riv's method by changing the DIR-615 to a switch that only does vlan tagging.

Or you can totally replace the DIR-615 with a vlan capable switch such as...
The RB250GS which is cheap, good and has all the functionality for vlan you need, and extras like bandwidth QOS if you require that.

There are screen shots of the SWOS it's web interface uses here

Hi All,

If I want to replace the dir615 completely, can I use the the NETGEAR WNDR3700 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router? I understand I need a VLAN capable switch, does this Netgear router have that function?

Also, is the setup kind of straight forward for the total replacement of dir615? I can't find any setup guide for this configuration.....maybe someone can point it to me :-)

I went to that site already but I didn't see any guide on the setup to totally replace the dir615, unless i missed something.......the guide is more on how to setup dir615 as VLAN bridging......

wow, sounds like quite troublesome......if I'm going to use the dir615 as VLAN bridge, NETGEAR WNDR3700 should be able to use as my wireless router link to dir615, right? In this case, no need VLAN capable router, right?

Correct. This would be the more trivial option.

Hi Mox123, may i know where are you getting the WNDR3700 and what's the price ?
I am interested to get one but was quoted RM 555. Also there is a new WNDR37AV Listed on Netgear website, so i might be waiting for that.
Thanks.

If people use google to look for these things before they ask here.

Seriously, many of the questions have been answered including where to buy those routers. Not long while ago there was even a WNDR3700 sale :/ but you all miss cause you couldn't google.

Use the lowyat search or google search next time  doh.gif

Seriously, I don't think there's anything wrong to ask questions which have been asked thousand of time.......after all this is a community forum which open to help each other. If I post question, I hope to get some quick response and if someone kind enough to answer me, it'll make my day.......if not, I won't blame because I know that it's most likely have been answered already, then I will have to spend more time to "GOOGLE" it.........And seriously too, if you feel that I'm those kind of idiot just want to ask fast question and get fast response without doing much homework, you can just ignore me, no point for posting above response .......

They seems to be the only one in Malaysia to carry WNDR3700, but no stock need to order also.
If you are interested perhaps can organize a bulk ?

Thanks all for the input......suddenly, it becomes so much choices.....maybe I shd state down my requirement......the router I'm looking is actually for small office use (<5 persons). And it's more for office networking + internet (off-course not so much on p2p, streaming or gaming things). I would like to look for something which is easy to setup, not too much of customization or configuration to do (because no expert in my office tongue.gif).

I choose the Netgear is because saw some reviews on it and sounds pretty reliable too......but most important is to solve the intermittent problem from the dir615 :-(

Btw, i was given the budget to get something not more than RM700 ;-)

ESR-9850. Stock firmware good and performance better then the other 2.

Much cheaper than the other 2 :/

Higher price doesn't mean better. and if your all not expert just use stock firmware not third party cause youll just end up bricking your router.
If you require wireless client mode meaning the router can access other wireless access points, then yes get either the netgear or asus, but your gonna have to install third party like dd-wrt or tomato teddy bear carefully tongue.gif

Thanks for your input.....will look into this particular model :-)

There's one things keep puzzle me which I wonder why replacing DIR-615 with other similar router is so troublesome......isn't the DIR-615 just a normal wireless router? Is it because this DIR-615 already been special mod by TM?

Yes, it's a modded router with VLAN tagging capability. Most home routers do not support this and none of them support multiple VLANs which is required for the IPTV + Internet to be used at the same time.
Hi Rizvanrp, thanks for your explanation :-)

Hi Guys, I would like to ask one question:

As I know for apartment unifi installation, it is still using the existing copper line, not the fiber to modem, right? So, how is the speed/performance wise, are we still getting the same thing as Fiber to modem like those landed properties?

in terms of speed/performance..u will be getting the same as the landed property albeit with a slight increase in latency...and the copper is only from the house to the small exchange that is servicing the building...

so dont worry..

Thanks :-)

TM people aren't allowed to go onto, into the roof so I had to climb into my roof area and pulled the cable into an already existing conduit. The conduit leads to a mezzanine area. So, with a puller, I got the cable into the house without any hacking.
Hi, just curious, why TM people aren't allowed to do the above......did they tell u the reason?
