Streamyx got 5mbps... For those 4mbps users capped at 5/6mbps. ~~~ But streamyx still uncompatible with UniFi, without considering the quota and TM "FUP". Upload speed is a mass difference.
*
Not to mention, there seems to be less restriction regarding upload, as according to tmnut upload won't be throttled :/

If you are a torrenter, especially to private tracker, maintaining upload ratio is important. This would be a huge difference between streamyx and unifi due to upload performance.

agree with u 100% i support streamyx it's unlimited download and upload.
*
No no.

I was actually meaning that Unifi may actually be better since upload won't really count toward bandwidth cap.

Streamyx only has 512 kbps upload, compared to Unifi 10 mbps upload shocking.gif

So you could argue that 5 mbps unifi BUSINESS package may be the better choice over all doh.gif

Price still sux but at least the performance is better than 4mb streamyx.

10mb and 20mb unifi BUSINESS package is too far out of reach for most of us in affordability rolleyes.gif

Lets just hope that consumer package bandwidth caps and throttle speed policy are revised.

PS: When i put emphasis on upload speeds, this is of importance for people who host servers whether it be web server, game server, file sharing (DC+, utorrent etc). It's most especially important for torrenting because the more you upload, the higher your priority is, which is why upload speed shouldn't be neglected. It's especially true for private torrent tracker sites like baka bt, and what.cd that puts importance on upload ratios. It's gonna sux if you got a measly 512 kbps for such private trackers when maintaining ratios.

But of course download speed will be the highest priority doh.gif

The problem still boils down to being the whole fiber optic network being built by tmnut.I'm pretty sure they are taking their sweet time laying all the cables and stuff as there is NO COMPETITION!!!

I feel that they have more than sufficient manpower, machine and money to do a fast rollout since they are the biggest telco in Malaysia. If they can't who can?

Don't even talk about ROI being too long and stuff as i currently don't see any other telco(even maxis)being able to compete in it for at least a few years to come.

Heard that maxis still need to rely on tmnut's fiber optic network for their HSBB.
*
I am pretty sure that tmnut makes a lot of money.

If they ever say they have none, it's because most of it went to stock holder dividends, and little was left for network upgrades rolleyes.gif Anyone a tmnut stock holder to confirm this hypothesis ?? Don't forget, they spent money on many stuff such as sponsor Manchester United.

I mean they are a monopoly for a single country, so i would find it hard to believe they aren't earning ridiculous amount of profit, especially when it was recently said in a study that tmnut is charging the most expensive broadband in the Asian region.

And as for the HSBB network implementation, VDSL2 was used for high rise buildings because the implementation for those structures was more suitable. FTTH (fiber to the home) was used for landed property for scalability. The FTTH network needs to be setup at some point, may as well be now.

VDSL2 could have been mainstream implement ages ago, but they didn't so thats why ftth is being used instead for the mainstream implementation. Even ADSL 2 was not fully utilized. 4mb isn't even top speed for ADSL2 o_O; They were obviously dragging their feet with adsl technology for many years.

I am pretty sure tmnut would have been much happier had they remained with copper internet forever and kept charging us the same expensive pricing which equates to fiber broadband packages in other countries. However they must have received some pressure from the government to get a move along to develop their network.

rolleyes.gif

So since sticking to an oudated copper network and cash cow that way was over, they are now trying out bandwidth caps which is fine, except they are doing their best to exploit it by setting ridiculously low bandwidth cap and throttled speed, yet expect us to pay a premium for it ? Maybe this is plan b for milking money from Malaysia netizens, rather than actual fair usage to make the internet fast for all.

Why not include the stats from the past 5 years.

in the recent year, especially 2008 and 2009, they spent money on ftth and that cost a pretty penny.

Very satisfied, but the cap policy to be enforced later is still doubtful whether this will remain so doh.gif

Hm the stuff i download is like 1080p stuff doh.gif 5-12gb per file so it kinda adds up.

Yes. Buy new hard drives. your gonna need the capacity brows.gif

Oh and buy a new router if you don't already have one. The DIR-615 they give you is junk. Follow Rivzan's guide to use your own router. I am using the ESR-9850 i ordered from hongkong, only cost me RM280 and the performance is great for that price nod.gif

My setup is like this

Fiberhome modem > dir-615 (configured using Rivzan's guide so it only does vlan tagging) > esr-9850 (this does dhcp, wireless and the routing).

My ftth install only took like 4 hour only :/ 10am to 2pm.

I am using DU Meter to monitor my bandwidth. It only records for this one machine only.

To better monitor, you would need a custom firmware router which has bandwidth monitoring such as Tomato firmware or DD-WRT.

@azzrul: What do you mean ?

@avex|mode: ah. Well .... i would sorta say yes kinda.

Speed right now is nice but it won't last when cap is enforced. Whether the consumer can make enough complaints that bijas will pressure tmnutters to back the fug off still remains to be seen hmm.gif

you on VIP5 or VIP10?

VIP10

At this point i'm not too inclined to bump up to 20mb :/ i'm too poor. 10mb is plenty fast enough.

is it me, or the router that unifi provides sucky as hell, its my 4th day using unifi, the 1st 2 days were great, I was getting speed as good as 19mbps on average.

yesterday nite, the router decided to stop working, it stops transmitting wireless signal, and I am not able to access to the router even via the network cable.

called tech support, took them 2 hrs to solve the prob, solution was to do a hard reset on the router, but they were reluctant to give me my password, keep asking me to troubleshoot.

now that its fixed, the problem still persist, I still get frequent disconnections (wireless signal). Can I ask for a router change? whats the point of having 20mbps speed that cant be used man.
*
Yes the router DLink DIR-615 they provide is crap. It's been mentioned a lot in this thread :/

Your should invest in a better router such as ESR-9850 which is good and cheap, or get one that supports DD-wrt or Tomato such as Asus RT-N16.

Follow Rivzan's guide how to setup using your own router.

I don't really watch iptv at all.

But i do think it's a good idea, if they ever bother to add some anime onto it with more selections.

If people don't agree with Kahak, why not just ignore his comment ? There is no need to flame him ;_; Everyone has their own opinions.

Anyway, if their going to charge for iptv, i hope it is possible to unsubscribe to iptv for a cheaper internet broadband.

I know their in the business to make profit, but they sure aren't making any brownie points with their customers rolleyes.gif

Unlimited browsing is a given.

But unlimited bandwidth isn't once they enforce cap.

Meaning for example, if your monthly cap is 60gb per month, after you use that much bandwidth when downloading content, you will be throttled to 250 kbps.

So that is bad ;_;

I'm not playing with your words or trying to be funny here.

I'm just stating a fact, since unlimited use of internet does not mean the same as unlimited bandwidth .... I felt you had a misunderstanding so i helped to clarify it for you.

This may be true now, but it won't be for long :/

The only solution so far is the DC+ hub Riv helped to start. Hopefully that will alleviate the problems for downloading stuff...... but we would still need to be careful especially with what we download as that would add toward the monthly bandwidth quota. Upload doesn't seem to be counted toward the quota, so that at least is good.

I have a question : does online gaming count toward bandwidth? No right? Sorry for the nooby question  blush.gif
*
Well depends.

This is what i found out.

Stuff not counted toward monthly bandwidth

1. local download and upload
2. international upload
3. iptv (uses additional bandwidth which they give ontop of your package, meaning if your VIP5, you get 5mbps + somemore for exclusive use for IPTV)

Stuff counted toward monthly bandwidth

1. International download only

Basically any software on your pc may have traffic to local or international sources. It's hard to tell.

If your playing games like warcraft 3 on US realm with us players, I don't think you need to worry about the internet usage for those things.

The only thing you need to watch out for is torrents, direct downloads, xdcc downloads, or any big file downloading for that matter from international sources.

Having a router loaded with Teddy Bear Tomato firmware is good since they have bandwidth monitoring. Sadly it won't separate international and local traffic :/ But at least is gives you a general estimate for total bandwidth used.
