Greetings lowyatians. I would like to join Wawasan Open University in this coming July 2010 intake but one thing makes me pondering about is the degree level in Wawasan Open University compared to other conventional colleges and universities in terms of "Distance Education" and "Traditional Lectures".

I've acknowledge that Open Universities graduates are valued for keeping their professional skills and academic up-to date, dedicated because they need to balance their life between family, career, and tertiary qualification. Not only that, they're also recognized for their effective time management and commitment. (Quote some from WOU website but is this some marketing gimmick to hook us in?)

How will employers judge us graduates from Open universities compared to conventional colleges? Are we having an advantage here or disadvantage?
I've done a lot of researches as well but I want inputs from the others before I make my move.

FYI, I will be taking Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networks (Hons) as stated in the WOU degree programme. I'm entitle to get 40 credits also known as 10 courses exempted based on my Diploma from KDU College Penang and my results as well, they claimed that it's only going to take around 3 years to finish up my degree. I'm 22 this year and working in an MNC currently.

Thank you in advance.

Hi djcarmen, thanks for the constructive and informative reply, I appreciate it.

One more question, how would employer judge open universities certs and conventional colleges degree. Will there be any difference? Is it a second class degree compared to the traditional degree?

that is a question u have to ask urself. are u confident enough to complete this programme n prove to others than a person with open uni certs are better than a conventional degree?

what i believe in is that... u can make it anywhere n be anyone u want to be, as long as u put ur heart n soul for it. there are nothing impossible only when u believe so. hope u get the inside meaning on this...

I would like to ask is Wawasan Open University acceptable internationally or just for local? due to i may want to apply for jobs in Singapore or other countries in future...

Between,if i want to take degree courses like Marketing, HR or Finance but partime, how long do i need to take to finish it,in the shortest and fastest time??
*
Hi there,

Speaking about Wawasan Uni are internationally recognized I'm actually not sure about that but I know that they're associated with the global organization including the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), and the Commonwealth Educational Media Center of Asia (CEMCA). They're also working with all other Open Universities globally. Besides that, it is also accredited by our Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.

Basically, a degree program that Wawasan Uni offers takes 5 years to complete, but if you have a diploma, you can apply for Advance standing/Credit transfer to an approximately 2 years. Results is a concern too if you're intending to apply for it.

That's it, good luck! smile.gif

Saying something and doing something are totally two different thing, it's like comparing apples and oranges, what I can say is, it's not going to be an easy path, but fruitful for the future. When I attended the orientation day, the professor told us, a lot of their students dropped out and never came back after 1 or 2 semesters, they urged us and other future students not to give up. Good luck.

well my bro said that Open U is for someone who have diploma background else is a very hard way to catch up the study

Well, I have a diploma but I would say it's totally down to that person attitude and determination. But it might be a little tough if you're not from IT background education previously, and furthermore, you need to study by your own mostly even though they are classes and lecturers. Not to hamper you with all these discouragement but if you want something, then go get it. Studying is never a wrong path. Trust me.

Hi,

Sorry to add in. I'm also having the same problem here. I'm a person who's considering WOU or OUM but the course BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGY but my highest qualification is only SPM and i've left study almost 7 years but i'm keen to study back. Then,i'm also scare i'm unable to cope with the study especially through distance learning due to tutorial class is only once a month and everything through online. What if the online is very bad since malaysia online thing is so super slow and always down and get disconnected most of the time?

Actually due to study back,i've change from a higher paid but work on weekends job to a lower paid but 5days weekdays job. I'm really hope that with this degree,it can bring me to a higher level but scared of my capabilities to cope with what i want study(psychology) as i've none of the knowledge and have been 7yrs not studying especially through online(reason as i said above).

But i also don't want to waste my time or money if after i've started it and then, regretted cz i really cant cope with it(coz no one to ask and all self-study) and quit.

But also at the same time,i want it so much that i want to change my life with it, hope it can help me to get to my dream...

I hope someone can gv me some comment on this and help me to thk out of the box...

Thanks a lot to whoever who will reply me here

Lol, you're not a young kid anymore, think wisely and practice displine. If everybody can do it why not you. Go talk to the consultant in WOU. They might help you. Good luck bro.

Hi, recently I also considerinng to study WOU or not due to some factor still under my consideration:
1. Is the degree well known by the company
2. Is the lecture qualified and experience
3. should i study part time and full time ( really dun know choose)

Currently I wan to persure in logistic and supply chain management, anyone in this couse.
*
1. WOU Degrees are recognized by LAN/MQA and well known to some extend due to the first batch of degree holders are only going to graduate this year 2011. But I've seen alot of companies advertising in WOU and our Forum Board. Such as Flextronics, CIMB and ETC.

2. Lecturer wise, some are extremely good and committed to their job but a few of them are bad. I believe every universities do encounter this common issue too. tongue.gif

3. There is only part-time course if I'm not mistaken. The bad side is it takes 5 years to finish a degree but if you're a diploma holder then you might get exemptions up to 2 - 3 years depending on your CGPA and past performance.

I'm not sure about other universities, but theres one thing i'm sure about is you're not gonna make it through if you dont have discipline because of the numerous assignments and course-works, not to mention the final exams as well wink.gif

I am the second batch WOU student in Computer system and network. This June will be my last semester exam. Currently doing my project. My advise is don't delay, just get yourself started since you get so many paper exempted. 10 paper = about 2 year of study. as one can finish only 6 paper/year. I am sure you can finish your study within 3 years. I started in 2007. Doing assigment is harder then the exam itself as it take time.

Since we all are working adult with limited time for study. Time management is a must for distance learning as well as internet connection at home. You can choose to go to the library to study with your friend if you are from Penang. It nice place to self-study there once a week. They are now giving free startup fees for those who sign-up for the study. Just give it a try and see if it work for you.  As a working adult with full time job, we don't have the luxury of doing full time study and distance open learning is our only option at this moment. Hope you can make up your mind and decide soon as WOU now is open for enrollment for coming july semester. Good luck to you.

Hello!!
I am currently doing MBBS second year in Aimst but I found that this isn't what I want and how my life should be in the future.
I am considering to enrol in Bachelor of English(Hons) in WOU. I love writing and hope it will be part of me.

Is it only part time courses available? I'm just 20 and I don't have a job so full time will be ok for me.
Please help me out and thanks in advance!  icon_question.gif  biggrin.gif
