The flasher way is also official release. It's release by Nokia.

Just that it's the manual method.

NSU and OTA is the easier method, but it has higher possibility of failure. When fail, you still have to use back the manual (flasher) way. So, even if you choose to use OTA or NSU, no harm downloading the firmware in your PC first, in case something happen, you don't have to wait for the download.

OTA will require enough rootfs space, else you'll get "not enough memory" error.

NSU way, you will still need to redownload and reinstall all the apps again. It's the same as flasher tool, except it's wizard/UI based. flasher tool is console based. They're actually pretty much the same thing.

Flasher --> NSU --> OTA

OTA, the simplest way but have most problem and risky (if anythings goes wrong). If something goes wrong, you have to revert to the flasher tool.

NSU is like windows based, a wizard. it will download the firmware into your PC and then perform the update.
It is similar like flasher, but it gives you like UI and wizard based, means just click click click. The downloaded firmware is probably kept in temp folder and deleted after the update.
If something goes wrong, you have to revert to the flasher tool.

Flasher is the manual way, console based; Means have to get your hands dirty, but you get the experience and learn more stuffs. The firmware need to be downloaded manually but you can keep it and re-use anytime required (e.g. bricked your N900, you can save your N900 with this)

If not wrong, it's the firmware release/revision. Third Maemo release is PR1.1.1

1.1.1 to 1.2 got difference. The useful and important is USSD, Option for Video Call, Option for "Display SMS only for Mobile Numbers", OFFICIAL Facebook Chat plugin, updated OVI Map, ability to re-arrange your programs (no more MORE menu), Email widget, Qt4.6 available by default, better App Manager "Update ALL", more rootfs space!!! etc.

1.2 leaked and 1.2 Official.
Honestly, I can't find any difference. Take so long to release. Rubbish!

Honestly speaking, it's really disappointing what Nokia did to the N900 users.... they're not paying attention and putting enough effort/support to this product.
If there is no community support, this phone could've died easily,... many apps, features lacking in the N900 is provided by the community (e.g. MMS, contacts plugins, widgets, etc). And after so long, Nokia still can't update the N900 properly, even the community has provided so many of it, such as MMS. Nokia should've incorporate it into N900 by NOW, or earlier. They took so long, only able to provide Facebook Chat plugin? The community has provided so many plugins long ago.... USSD only available officially in PR1.2 which took ages to come.
What is Nokia doing honestly? MeeGo MeeGo MeeGO! And no official MeeGO for N900.
Can't they concentrate and update N900 OS properly at least.

Did you try to flash normally without flashing the eMMC.

It's simple, easy and fast and doesn't matter if you have incompatible apps installed or rootfs space not enough.

For easy, just flash the firmware, forget about the eMMC unless your really want a clean install.

Flashing the firmware only, your contacts, sms still there. Your settings is reset to default, apps are gone.
You can use restore to restore the settings, and restore app to restore the apps.

Your laptop spoilt? Then you might want to think twice doing FOTA.
If FOTA fail or something went wrong, you'll need to revert to the flasher tool.

There're cases where FOTA causes reboot loop; Those early N900 owners will know, when they update to PR1.1 or PR1.1.1.

Logically, Desktop is not possible, unless they have applied fixed positioning for the icons and widget.

The beauty of Maemo desktop is you can arrange widget and icons as you like, flexible! No restrictions like other Smartphone OS "Home Screen".

If you have other smartphone OS, take notice how the icons/widgets are placed. They're place inside a container or fixed position; So when you switch to portrait/landscape mode, these containers are re-arrange according to the orientation.

NSU is same like flasher, but it is windows based, Wizard based (click click click).

NSU can fail too, even flasher can fail, but flasher you can re-do again because you have all the files.
NSU, the files is downloaded and stored somewhere unknown to the user, once flash, the file is most probably deleted. I'm not sure if there is failure, NSU will ask you to re-flash again or not.

You will notice during NSU update, there is warning about not disconnecting the cable during the process... imagine power trip, etc.
Besides, when plugin to NSU, after it detects and ask you to update and you click YES, it will download the firmware which take sometime and it never say it is safe to remove the cable? It's not flashing yet, only downloading firmware....
So the whole process would take long time.

Important information when using NSU or flasher tool.

Make sure your N900 battery is charge at least > 50%. Advisable to fully charge it if you can wait.

I remember there is one app which provide grid or something like that to the desktop.

Portrait mode will be nice, but I prefer the flexibility and uniqueness of arranging the icons/widgets, etc. It's what makes Maemo so special from the other "smartphones". This is a true Desktop, you can even overlap you icons, etc.

You can create custom wallpaper and adjust you icons to fit your wallpaper, that's cool.

With the flexibility, there's so many things can be done and we can see many more unique and creative Desktop design from different people. While other smartphones, they all look the same, the only thing interesting is the theme.


Probably something wrong with your bin file since you're able to flash back to PR1.1.1 using the flasher tool?
Try re-download again the bin file or try another region file (if you know which region your N900 is).

Also, try to remove your micro SD card and see. I'm not really sure what's the cause of the reboot loop.

As I remember, PR1.1.1 update is to make preparations for PR1.2.

So, possibly you can try to flash to PR1.1.1 first, then PR1.2?

Yea, the problem is not during download, it's during the flashing/installation process.

Remember to make sure the battery is enough (for OTA, best to have fully charged or keep the charger plugged in). Because it will take a while to download, and the App Manager takes up a lot of resources on the phone. After it downloads, it will install automatically right? If yes, must make sure the battery is enough especially if you're outside on 3G which will consume more power during OTA downloads.

Ah yes, if I remembered correctly, for major update, YES.

But I could be wrong, someone please verify.

UPDATE: I remember that someone here able to update via OTA?
Maybe you need to have more FREE rootfs.
And also uninstall some apps, I think Eriaku mentioned before.
