just curious... since this is Android section, assumption i make is that most are Android users and indirectly, should be Google users.

so, essentially, we are ok with leaving our data with Google. they are big and so far they have done no major wrongs.

data = contacts, emails, credit card details, etc... the full range of Google services and products.

however, how does one feel about other company handling your data?

companies like... Facebook, Twitter whatsapps, tango, etc... From what I understand with companies/ apps like whatsapp, they will use their server to send the messages between your contacts. potentially, they could be keeping a copy of your messages. are you guys comfortable with that?

for me... i'm not really into FB. never liked how they handle our privacy -- heck, i feel they totally want to disregard our privacy.

i've yet to install whatsapp mainly because i dun like to have another party handling my data/ communication. since i already 'trust' Google, prefer to use Gtalk, etc... However, most of my contacts (iphone users especially) is not on it...

so dilemma for me... what about you guys?

I use FB for fun.  It's a great way to catch up on friends whom I don't contact as much as I want to.  I don't upload pics, but friends/family upload them and tag me (I can't stop them).  Certain details have to be accurate and real so old friends can find me (name, etc).

Google - they read my email and target me with personalised ads, know my appointments via Calendar, what I have on my phone via Market, etc.  But I don't really care.  I'm just 1 tiny dot in the sea of millions of their users.

Whatsapp - they can know my entire phonebook and my conversation with all of my contacts.  This feels a bit scarier to me, so I've never had the urge to install Whatsapp.  Having less control than conventional IM makes me feel insecure.

Nowadays corporations can easily identify us as individuals, knowing where we live, what we bought, what we like, how we look like, who our family members and friends are (and details about them like above), where we work, how much we earn, etc.  Scary, isn't it?
*
ya, it is scary. so i try to limit my exposure. Google is a 'risk' i can accept. some like skype (i think now considered as part of MS) is also acceptable.

sms is still playing an important role for me -- most of my friends still like to send short messages, etc... so, i'm a bit disappointed that i can't join in as most want or are using apps like tango/ whatsapps. i'm still trying to resist installing in... trying instead to get my friends to install skype, etc...

anyway, i have a few apps installed -- mainly games. but non games ones are: tweetdeck, Google Reader, Google + (apk), 3G watchdog, LinkedIn, Barcode scanner, Dolpin HD, moboplayer and recently -- Note Everything (this is a super excellent memo apps -- and best of all, free -- plan to donate to the dev later).

anyone playing zenonia 3?

playing it... though sometimes the UI seems buggy... every now and then, i activate the powers even though my finger is nowhere near the button/ icon... but otherwise, its nice.

another one i'm spending time on is Pocket Legends.

my apps on Samsung Galaxy Ace

Social networks
- Tweetdeck (for Twitter & Facebook updates)
- Skype (for free calls. but always running in the bg. don't like it but no choice)
- Foursquare (for checking-in. but not using anymore)
- Whatsapp (free msg-ing with those having Whatsapp acc)
- Viber (like Whatsapp but with VOIP function)
- Molome (more or less like instagram for iPhone. photosharing app)

Cameras
- Camera360 Ultimate (very good fun camera with alot of effects)
- ActionSnap (fun camera. let you take a few pics at the same time)
- Mei Tu Xiu Xiu (good photo editing app. only in chinese but easy to work around)

Games
- Reversi Free
- Shaky Tower
- Big Big BIG 2

Tools
- Goggles (Google using image)
- Papago X5 (navigation app)
- Green Power (cuts off your 3G/Wifi when your phone screen is off so it saves battery. really works for me)
- Advanced Task Manager (kills your bg running apps within the set timer)
- Springpad (notepad app. can sync with Chrome browser app on your desktop)
- Cinema Showtimes (showtimes in Malaysia)
- GO Launcher Ex (home launcher. the ui is a LITTLE faster than the original home. doesn't lag)
bolded apps are recommended
*
tweetdeck can also do 4square check-ins... wink.gif

aren't you worried that 3rd party like whatsapps and viber may keep copies of your sms/ voice calls? smile.gif

shaky tower... concept seems good but i din play well on my phone. the sensors din seem sensitive at all.

i didn't know tweetdeck can do foursquare check-ins.  blink.gif
i go try out now! HAHA!!

regarding whatsapp keeping copies of my sms / voicecalls, i'm not really worried.
not like i have big business or political issues going on. if they want to keep copies of my gossip then let it be lah.  rclxms.gif

i cannot stay long on one game. i usually get bored after a few hours.
i only play games like "big 2" and reversi.  biggrin.gif
i install shaky tower so i can let my brother / boyf / kids play. LOLOLOLOL!!
*
then, some simple games that might interest you... free too
* angry birds
* fruit slice
* fire ball
* cut the rope (apk) -- i recall that time the apk was a legal distribution... not sure if you can still find it since its not available for purchase on Market

i think i read... there's now a free version of fruit ninja as well... similar to fruit slice. in fact, fruit slice is a copy of fruit ninja. easy to play games...

tried all of the above games already.
not interesting.

angry birds are more fun on comp.
fruit slice doesn't need to use the brain, boring. LOL
*
angry birds fun on the comp?!? eerrrr... using mouse?!? errr... no fun leh... for me, i find using touch screen more fun. computer = i m assuming, the chrome version?

isn't it usually the brainless games that is quite fun?!? lol...

i think there's another one called burn the rope or sth...

anyway, i'm still playing pocket legends. sort of stopped Xenonia 3 since i keep getting the UI bug -- buttons pressed when my fingers are nowhere near the icons. might download inotia 3 later.

having played, both... yes, i agree with your assessment. but currently, the UI bug i face in Zenonia 3 is really a turn off.

is it really good? i dread spending more money on games. i bought samurai 2 after so many ppl said its good... after playing it... realised its not sth i like. i like games like Ultima 4 & Ultima 5 (PC days). Pocket Legends, Zenonia and Inotia is nice too. Final Fantasy 7 is also another game I like. is battlehearts similar to these games. looks like it is...

I detest console-type RPGs because they are long-winded and I hate the party micro-management.  I also don't play many action or RPG games on phones.  But Battleheart is something different, it's easy to get into, is not too difficult, does not punish the player, and everything is very polished.  It's the only mobile game I have ever been almost addicted to.  It's nothing like Ultima or FF series, because everything is simplified for the casual player.  There is no story.  It's just levelling and getting better loot... and it does so excellently and cutely.  Frankly, I think it's not your cup of tea laugh.gif

I use Dolphin Mini.
*
ya, dun look like it'll be my cuppa tea... i wanna be able to like grow my character, assign attributes, etc... if its just attack, collect loot, upgrade, attack, collect loot, upgrade... i call this the diablo-type of game. something like samurai 2.

thanks anyway for the feedback... saved me from having wasted some $$$. smile.gif

guys... asking for advice. currently using TweetDeck. i kinda like it because its a one-stop for Twitter & FB updates for me (can also do 4Square checkin).. and I can also have multiple accounts.

but there are some little bugs (or maybe i dunno how to use TweetDeck properly) like when i get the @me updates (usually FB posts), sometimes i can't seem to be able to click and go to the post to reply.

and there are just some little quirks like refresh rate now working like it should. set to 15mins but sometimes it does not update at all.

anyone can recommend another similar apps with the following requirements:
* gather posts from FB and Twitter
* support multiple Twitter account
* 4Square check-in would be nice

due to the internal memory constraint for my htc nexus one,

I found a few apps that quite worth to mention

1. Swype keyboard
2. Docs by Google documents
3. Analytics by Google analytic ( it has a widget app, pretty cool)
4. Google+ (now able to reshare a post via phone, previously can't)
5. handscent sms
6. xe - currency convert
7. Karl Mortage calculater (very useful for calculating mortage repayment, got chart and all)
8. Twitter for android. (the stock app by Twitter developer still the best, the rest are too complicated to use)
9. Foursquare for android.
10. Expensify (record and analyze your expenses with web browser support)
*
for #3... didn't know they have that. thanks... will check it out soon!

as for #4... is it officially available for MY? I only found the APK but not sure if its the latest. where did you get Google + apps from? Market? Or...? Can share the site?

guys... any suggestion for twitter client/ apps?

must have the following:
* multiple account
* single timeline (for the multiple account) -- meaning all the tweets from the different accounts appear on one screen

tried the following:
* tweetdeck -- it din feel as intuitive as the others i tried out
* ubersocial -- likes this... would have been good if not for the fact that it costs usd4.99 for 1 year (unlimited upgrades). plus, their support page in website had quite a number of ppl complaining about the pricing, etc...
* tweetcaster -- no single timeline for all the accounts
* plume -- not really intuitive and there was something else about this apps that i was not too happy with... can't remember.

recently installed Line by Naver. decided to open myself to even more means of communcation.

not bad -- from initial use and quick look... it looks like a good combination of Whatsapp and Viber.

from what i can tell (not yet tested and will share why later):
* can do group chat (like whatsapp)
* can make calls (like viber)
* lots of nice emoticons/ stickers

hard to do the tests above... coz seems i only have a few contacts using this... but it seems good, and free. smile.gif

but ya... kinda like it more... it's really good and i like the BIG stickers/ emoticons... smile.gif

i am just wondering whether our communication (photos, text messages) are stored on LINE/ NAVER servers, which i dun want... it's something i'll also have to dig around a bit later on...
