Hi guys. I'm hoping someone can help me a little here.

I'm a little intimidated to post here at 1st, but what the hell, I need some good advice.

So, I started to go to the gym a little over a month ago, it's a small ghetto gym with most of the members there doing bodybuilding.
But, what I want, is really strength. I'm currently following the 5X5 stronglift loosely, but I'm a little worried that I might gain too much mass.
As I play a few sports, and am looking to venture into mountain climbing and martial arts in the near future, I would like to keep my mass down but be stronger.
Of course, I would like to have the killer looks too, alike to the Spartans in 300. (go on, laugh) And I'm really all for the Gym Jones' philosophy of looks comes along with strength.

So, after all the babbling, my question is, is it suitable for me to continue the 5x5 stronglift, or do i have to change my training, and what about my diet.

Before someone comes in and say I'm looking to be spoon fed, I actually did do my own research, but a lot of times I'm confused by the jargon. And most of the threads here are talking about bodybuilding, and even if it's strength training, their goal is not the same as mine, which is to be compact but strong. Thanks in advance.

I read that when I just started going to the gym, and reread it just now. I still don't know if 5x5 is the right one for me.
And the gym boss is constantly pressuring me into following his bodybuilding routine. shakehead.gif

Tell him you're not interested in bodybuilding. But
then you want killer looks though so it's kinda a
conflict of interest.

Then powerlifting. You can gain some
mass but you won't achieve the development of a
bb'er. Madcow is pretty solid.

Hey welcome bro, I totally know how you feel bout posting here haha. Don worry bout it, the bros here r really nice and friendly. Generally you're worried about gaining too much mass I believe, which is the main concern when people start a strength/bb programme.. they wana get 'fit' but not bulky like the hulk.. sumtin from the faq..

The trainer at the gym said that 3x8 was better if I don't want to get bulky.
•Many people struggle with losing their skinny look, although they're lifting weights, because they aren't eating enough. Getting bulky isn't that easy: you have to eat more than you're doing now. You won't get you there by training hard.

•3x8 actually gets you more bulky than 5x5. High reps build sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (fuller muscle, less strength) while low reps build myofibrillar hypertrophy (denser muscles & more strength). So if you don't want to get bulky, stick to the 5x5.

hope that helps

Hahaha, ya, it's intimidating, very much like being in the gym for the 1st time.

It's not the bulky looks that worries me, it's me slowing down after I gain mass that worries me. I still want to be agile and fast.

Thanks for the info on the difference of 3x8 and 5x5. The gym owner is always trying to get me to train till failure.

I'm not skinny, maybe even a little fat. I'm like your average dude, with a little tummy. Flabby arms, chest, but quite a broad shoulder for my height.
Weighing 66Kg at 170. I have big thighs though, from all the football and basketball.
