i'm currently slowly building a new PC after 6 years. got the case (Corsair Carbide 400R) and psu (Corsair TX650) already. last week ordered an Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard. now waiting for the Ivy Bridge processors to be available...

a very slow project indeed...lol

wats the difference ( Real world application ) between SB vs IB?
*
although the processors are not available in the market yet (except few Core i7) for us to make conclusion, jumping from SB to IB wouldn't bring much difference if you ask me. yes it is a technology jump, but from SB to IB, a minor jump. not worth the upgrade, unless you have the money to burn of course.... however if your current pc is using Pentium D like mine smile.gif , it is a huge jump......

real world application as in application themselves ? no difference... all application running on SB will run on IB..

the only difference i can think of that affect us is the power consumption....

z77 supports pcie 3.0. to get the benefit pcie 3.0 you must have all of this component : a pcie 3.0 gpu, a motherboard with pcie 3.0 slot , and intel ivy bridge processor. missing any of those, bye bye pcie 3.0 benefit...

why does it seem Asus has most of the flavours for Z77?
Where is GD65 or 55 from MSI? Extreme 6 from Asrock?
*

Ivy Bridge does get really hot when overclocked.
I managed to overclock the Turbo clock up to 4.1GHz(4 cores)/4.3Ghz(1 core).
When all cores stressed @ 4.1GHz, the temp reached 90'C.
Maybe my cooler is not good, but I think even for good coolers the temp can reach about 70-80'C.

P/s: Malaysia weather is hot nowadays  mad.gif

you need it water-cooled bro... hehe.. or is it already ?

why you hit your own face? theoritically 3770k can accelerate to 6.3GHz since its max multiplier is 63x wink.gif

umbelieveable? believe it tongue.gif
*
in theory yes, but you need liquid nitrogen/CO2 cooling for that i believe...

on top of that Mobile chips are downclocked vs their desktop counterpart. Thats means even less heat produce. So the small die isnt gonna cause any issue.

Again by using TIM on IVY and not mature 22nm, Intel has lost quite a bit of money from Sandy bridge users.

I dont think the small saving they get from using TIM is enough to offset the lost sales from Sandy bridge users. Still dont understand why they do such thing.  shakehead.gif

emm.. perhaps it is their way of saying "hey, we won't stop you from overclocking, but if you do it you will suffer heat issue. if you want higher clock processors we have them here (hands showing ivy variants)"

... anyway are those heat issues so significant they can't be solved with water cooling kit ?

my processor in i5-3450, so obviously not meant for oveclocking. yesterday i did a prime95 stress test (max heat, max load etc) for around 10-15 minutes. the max temperature was stable at 48 degree celcius.... not sure it that's acceptable temperature for full load or not. i was using corsair hydro series h80 by the way...

low end market also cannot fight in price and performance. whats the point.?

Anyway this is intel thread,, stop talking about losing platform like AMD already.....lol

btw, want to ask intel users, the virtu lucid thing....does it really shutdown your discrete gpu to near 0 power usage when nt in use? Planning to
upgrade to Z77....rig will be on 24/7 for download also. Btw, there seems not much diference between Z68 and Z77? z68 cheaper wor...i am now eyeing that Asus VLX mobo. Around rm430.
*
if you're eyeing the -V LX mobo from Asus, might as well get the Z77 chip version.... also cost rm430... P8Z77-V LX.. i'm using it...

emm.. perhaps i should make a thread called "All about CPU - Intel, AMD, Motorola, Cyrix (opps Cyrix died already)" so that we can discuss microprocessors generally....
