Is it me or has ALT begun to raise his prices? He tends to quote higher prices offhand. Best to negotiate with him and insist on a certain price point for his services. He also tends to "forget" certain things he has promised before.

On a somewhat related note, I think Fly FM just tried to prank call ALT. Heard it on their morning show while driving to work today. Wonder who sent in the prank request?

The suits look nice, but generally everything looks good on a model's body. How much is the asking price for the suit and just the pants?

Whether it is a good buy ornot depends on the value proposition i.e. bang for your buck.

Beau,
Ben (the Dj) pretended to be an Indian gentleman (complete with heavy accent) asking ALT if he could make a suit using his wife's huge and expensive collection of Saree cloth.

Ben then asked if he could have vegetables and fruits attached to the suit.

ALT was cool tho, he just said 1) Saree will make a transparent suit, hence unsuitable and 2) He can't help with having vegetables and fruits attached to the suit.

When pressed further, ALT just said that there is a customer walking in and he needed to attend to him, and after saying "sorry I can't help you", promptly hung up on Ben.

Tad expensive no?

But if it suits your budget, they why not?

Was at ALT for my first fitting today.

My requested slanting shoulders became "natural" (horizontal) shoulders so I insisted that ALT change it (which he initially resisted). Arm holes, sleeve lengths and side vents look good. Button positioning a little high and had it lowered. Trousers a little long and had it shortened. Second fitting sometime next week.

ALT keeps flip flopping on his labor charges for work shirts. He even wants to charge me extra for non fused collars and cuffs. I'm seriously considering engaging another tailor for this.

If you have naturally horizontal shoulders, you should just let it be. Imposing slanted jacket shoulders on human shoulders with underdeveloped trapezius muscles causes the jacket to be supported from the shoulder tips. This is a bad arrangement. The best you can do if you have horizontal shoulders is to have minimal padding. Not a great solution, but the best one in light of hard constraints.

Added on November 6, 2010, 10:10 pmThe first time he did me non-fused collars, he tried to charge me extra too, but I brushed it aside.

The second time he did me such shirts, he tried again. I brushed it aside.

Now he just goes, "How much would that be?"

I'd say, "I'm paying you 220* for the lot."

He'd go, "Oh, OK."

*220 is a hypothetical sum. Not to be taken seriously.

Noted with thanks bro kotmj. Thankfully, my trapezius muscles are generally considered well developed. I'll just have to wait for the second fitting to see if the adjustments ALT is supposed to make on the shoulders will look better.

On the shirts, seems like I'll have to bargain harder with him on his labor charges or I'll just have to get another tailor to do it. Any recommendations bro?

I've personally used 6 tailors for shirts. ALT is the best by a large and noticeable margin (but also amongst the most expensive of the 6, same price as the worst). Now that he makes non-fused stuff with success, he is essentially the only one I would use for fine shirts. I use a small town tailor for casual shirts at half the price. But there isn't the same satisfaction wearing his stuff.

I have directly inspected the shirts of maybe a dozen other tailors, most recently Lord's in Bangsar Shopping Center. They all suck.

Added on November 7, 2010, 1:07 amdecatano is not too bad. You might want to try them. Not for me though, as their's are factory-made and the salespeople in the branch near mine have never heard of MOP, have never worn linen, and are generally IQ-challenged.

Thanks again. Guess I have very limited choices on who I can leave my Acorn fabrics with.

Very nice DB/assemble, tho IMHO, just a tad formal for an "event". I would think that any of your SBs would have made an equal statement minus the formality that comes with the DB.

How did the night go?

You know, following Mark Cho's example, I am thinking of buying up MBT. Will then turn it into Malaysia's largest tailoring enterprise. Will make MBT sign a 5-year contract (he's only 50+) to stay on as well as provide him with equity. I think 10X present year's earnings would make him sign. The guy has no successor anyway, and his customer list would be worthless if he retires.

It should be possible to triple revenue within 12 months. I've been there so many times and have only seen one other customer. Very phak woo ying. The guy is an abnormally talented fitter.

Go for it. But get key man risk insurance on MBT in addition to other stuff such as training apprentices etc

Kot, surely the Project Manager can't be "to appeal to the lower income customers and will be fused". How about "for the most yim chim of customers who knows what they want, provides his own materials and haggle for the lowest prices"? lulz
