You can get the Panny PT-AE 4000 for around RM6600. It's a great option for those who are "rainbow" sensitive.

This is very interesting. Where to get this? In Singapore, it's slightly below RM10K mark. I guess that this is a direct conversion by using US price hmm.gif

For less than USD1.5k, I can only recommend Mitsubishi HC3800. Around USD1.2k. Although no iris, the native contrast is quite good near 2500:1. HD20 and Vivitek 1080FHD is entry level 1080p projector. Most reviewer would recommend top up a bit and get HC3800.

Of course it's the direct conversion of a US price. The OP said he's going to do a bulk buy from the US (that's not counting delivery to Malaysia). What the OP didn't say is at what price is he going to sell after his markup.

The 4000 will sell here for around RM11-12k, as usually the practice when there's a new model comes out. Unlike the previous models, the 4000's light bulb is specific to this model only.

Projectors are not subject to Malaysian tax so if you want to buy one from the US, just get a mail forwarding company to send it to you. The extra cost would still be lower than the authorized dealer price here.

Imported from US for US$999. Singapore has it but US still the cheapest. I'm a easy man to please. May be when 3D projector goes to main stream then consider changing. smile.gif

I would pay too since pj is more sensitive if to compare to other display panels. If it does kick a fuss within the warranty period, then you still have peace of mind.

Will check out on the fhd pj when I go to Singapore.

sometimes it 1/3 up to 1x of the pj price.
if AE4000 US market price around 7k, sg can get for 8k so a bit ok la.
if HD20 US market price <4k, but here is 6k, so is it worth it?
i can insure for my pj with that extra money biggrin.gif

it is likely they will repair for u but kena bayar lo...

as for sg warranty, i personally feel its no big deal sending to sg.. coz its the same for me coz my hometown is very ulu.. anything rosak i need to send to KL service centre anyway.. so sending it to sg or kl invloves the same trouble... but if u live in KL then diff story...

I think sg local set rm8220 and malaysia local set rm13,000 the diff of rm5000 is risking.. rm5000 can send to sg for repair many times jor hhehe

Knowing mal cos.. they will try their very darndest to dishonor warranty more so if u didnt buy it from them..
Havin to pay for repairs when rightfully it shld be under de privilige of being warrantied is not helpin at all.. it jus rubs salt on an alrdy festerin wound..
To me not hvin a local rep to do all de run ard is bad as I dont hv d time nor strength/ability to get de offendin unit up n runnin.. BUT of cos if its worth de risk [ meanin substantially cheaper] .. I will get de Sgp model ..

Who in d rite mind wil pay 50% more?

haha interesting.
my conclusion:
1) get pj from sg if your hometown in sg.
2) dont buy from local distri (not worth to pay extra money for the warranty)

hey anyone know how this thing works?
http://ucare.com.my/coverage/index_standard.html
its like we can insure our projector.
export set can?

Just took the first step into the world of projector by purchasing a Vivitek hfd1080. Like what HTkaki said, one you take these step, there is no turning back. Now, I watch my 46 lcd tv is like watching a 20 tv. The only thing I'm not satisfy is the dark background is not solid black more of greyish. Maybe still not get used watching projector, too use to lcd tv.

gst can only be claimed when u travel by air.. a good dealer will deduct the gst for u when u buy it.. save u the trouble of claiming at the airport.. the sg gov will reimburse to them... but if u meet a lazy dealer then u just have to claim it from the airport.. no big deal.. these are sg officers who are there with a smile n ready to help u.. not the hand picked fXck head gov officers we have here to mislead n point u to the wrong way...

My friend would like to sell off his Optoma 720p HD66 3D projector used for less than 5 hours only. Looking at RM 2800. No 3D glasses included but you can get any glass that is DLP-Link compatible. He throw away the box as he is moving to his new house. Anyone interested just pm me and I'll pass his contact to you. Anyway, he bought this unit from US as Malaysia still don't have 3D projector.

Bought it in Ipoh and around 5.5 Ks. Not very happy with the screen. There are wrinkles at the side of the screen. When there is a panning shot, you can see wave on the screen. These is very distracting. My screen is draper luma motorised screen. Bought it secondhand. Got it for nine hundred bucks. A friend of mind recommend me using white screen. mine is a grey screen. I thought grey screen more suitable for dlp projector like mine.

I thought grey screen more suitable for dlp projector like mine.

best is to have a fixed screen. How's the pj performance thus far?

Grey screen is better in side ambient light rejection but some material have a lower gain. You need a bright projector to match with grey screen. Traditionally, DLP is the brighter projector thus the recommendation of grey screen.

for Vivitek, grey is better since it's a bright projector and also vivitek isn't as black (but details are good).

At RM5.5K, it's a very good deal IMHO. On my next trip to Ipoh, am I welcome to your elite HT room?  blush.gif

You are right about the "V" formation on the screen. That is risk buying secondhand screen. You know these is my first time into projector.
Mine is not an elite setup like yours notworthy.gif . More of a peasant setup. No problemo. You are welcome, bro. wink.gif

Yeah! you are right about the picture detail. The screen is distracting me to enjoy the full potential of the Vivitek. The wrinkle at the side and the dirt stain on the top of screen. How to wash off those stain? Went to another hifi shop nearby my place to check for screen. The boss recommend me OS screen. He said it is made in Japan and more thicker than my draper screen. Not easily wrinkle. He also recommend me to let my screen down for one week and not roll it up. He said these might get rid some of the wrinkles on my screen. wink.gif

Even if you buy new screen the "V" might form later in future. That's why fixed screen is best. But in your case, with LCD TV behind hard to use fixed screen.

Tab tensioned pull down screen eliminates the 'v' problem but at a price. I mean hefty price.

I always figured that the best way to integrate a flat panel with a projector within the same room was to have the fixed screen start right from the ceiling, then the center channel speakers are placed right underneath it and then the flat panel TV. The flat panel TV is on a bracket that can horizontally stow it when you're using a projector (either stow it in front with the rest of the HT equipment or you stow it inside the wall).

Some idea you can consider. You can flip up the screen to the ceiling when not watching projector.

OS screen is not that expensive compare to one more screen that hifi shop boss recommend to me. It is call Screen Research and cost around thirty Ks. Really out of my budgets shocking.gif . As for wrinkles, he dare not guarantee there won't be any wrinkles but it is much better than Drapers. He said ninety percents of draper screen will wrinkle after being use a while. try amscreen, a local company in Subang. IIRC, a 92" fixed screen is around RM1.2K.

If you are into DIY, then you can just buy the screen online from US and build your own frame. If not, send to photo frame maker or carpenter to do it.

Hi caerulln,

OptomaHD20 is only US950 after discount in US. Lets say its (US990xRM3.3=RM3267)
There is no tax for computer and projector items. Is it cause about RM1000 for insurans and shipping? Incase if got tax also the price wont be such a high.
Revised your price bro, so that more people will consider to buy it.

Yeah shipping is around that.
I was quoted USD269 by an ebay seller.
There is 10% sales tax on projectors.
Locally I was quoted RM6k+ for HD20 which is insane. Probably due to its popularity.

I'm just trying to help people order.
I place a fixed price so I'm taking a risk if somehow there is any hidden fees etc.
I guess u can consider it as service fee.
If u find it cheaper to order yourselves, I have no problem with that smile.gif

Projection screens have optical coatings that enhance their reflective properties. White walls don't. You can certainly use a wall if you want to, and you will get a watchable image. However, compared to the image you'd get with a screen, highlights will not be as brilliant, contrast and color saturation will be reduced, and (depending largely on the texture of the wall) sharpness will be reduced as well. You will end up with an image that is not as good as your projector is capable of delivering.

I guess he would opt for 'conventional' 16:9 screen since AE-900 native ratio is 16:9.

Interesting. Even with service charge still worthwhile.

This coverage by Malaysia with service charge is stated in the warranty card?

Here's an interesting fact between the 2 budget projectors.

http://www.projectorcentral.com/vivitek_h1...ctor_review.htm

Vivitek H1080FD versus Optoma HD20

Lumen output. The H1080FD is rated at 1800 lumens to the HD20's 1700. That's not much of a difference, but in actual use there is more of a spread. The H1080FD's 1607 lumens in Bright mode is much brighter than the HD20's 954 lumens, and makes the H1080FD more flexible for use in ambient light. In their respective theater modes, the two projectors are much more similar, with the H1080FD measuring 712 lumens to the HD20's 633. In practical terms, the two projectors are on equal footing when calibrated for home theater.

Contrast. The H1080FD and HD20 have similar contrast specifications - the HD20 is 4000:1 while the H1080FD is 5000:1. However, when placed side by side, the difference shows - the H1080FD has noticeably higher visible contrast than the HD20, making the images on that projector more dynamic and three-dimensional than those on its competitor. The HD20 had a deeper black level, but overall its contrast does not quite match that of the H1080FD.

Color. If you want a projector that you can simply plug in and start using, the HD20 is your best bet. Out-of-the-box color accuracy is far better on the HD20 than it is on the H1080FD, and the projector needs very little adjustment to reach its peak. However, if you don't mind a little fine-tuning, the H1080FD has brighter, richer, more vibrant color post-calibration than the HD20, so do-it-yourselfers who don't mind fiddling with the picture adjustments will prefer Vivitek's offering.

Portability. Since both projectors are so small, some people will want to travel with them. The HD20 is physically smaller, though not by much. The H1080FD is lighter by about a pound, and also has one feature that the HD20 lacks - an onboard speaker. The five-watt speaker is small and tinny when compared to even the most rudimentary outboard setups, but it can accept audio signals over an HDMI link and turn the H1080FD into a complete mobile theater solution. The HD20 lacks a speaker, and so any mobile use must incorporate an alternate speaker system, such as that on a laptop.

Fan noise. The Optoma HD20 is noticeably louder than the H1080FD, in both normal and eco lamp modes. Quiet operation is typically a feature of much more expensive projectors, and it is nice to see an inexpensive model like the H1080FD that has so little fan noise. Fan noise on the HD20 will be more of an issue if you want to set the unit between the seats right next to the viewer. Both projectors will fade into the background if ceiling mounted.

Rainbows. The Optoma HD20 has a 4x-speed color wheel with RGBRGB segments, while the H1080FD has a 3x-speed wheel with RGBCMY segments. All this gibberish means that we saw more rainbows on the H1080FD than we did on the HD20. If you are sensitive to rainbows, you will have to consider the trade-off: you can get better contrast and color on the H1080FD, but you will see more rainbows.

My main gripe at most of these projector review sites is that they never ever post the calibration results, so u never know what they mean by colour accuracy. I like AV forums becoz they post the charts and its clear for u to see the actual results. (this is only for colour and contrast, the rest can be seen by eye, however the colour and contrasts are equally important)

Note that Vivitek doesn't had greyscale tuning in user menu, only hidden in service menu. Unfortunely, I can't find any service code for Vivitek and the secret is only accessible by certified ISF tuner. Without greyscale, CMS is pretty useless.

That outrightly sucks! A modern day projector without access to greyscale controls is sinful. Even the budget Optoma sets had greyscale controls.

I believe the need for a CMS and proper greyscale/gamma controls for a projector are extremely important. More so than a TV due to its size.
