Bought this notebook at the KL PC Fair over the weekend. Prior to purchasing this notebook, I was deciding whether to get the ASUS A42JR (i5 version) or LENOVO G460 (i5 version). The ACER & LENOVO was priced similar at RM2699 while the ASUS is at RM2899 (ATI 512MB) / RM2999 (ATI 1GB). Frankly I prefer the keyboard on the LENOVO G460 as its typing feel was very similar to desktop keyboards. Performance wise, Windows 7 rated it with 5.0. Surprisingly, for the ASUS, its Windows 7 rating was only 4.9 where I noticed that the notebook faired lower in 3D Aero performance as well as Processor Calc per sec compared to ACER.

Having read several reviews on ASUS A42JR pertaining to short battery life & my other notebook being ASUS K40AB (AMD Turion 64) which could only squeeze out 1hr 50 min on battery power, I felt that the A42JR notebook could not justify the extra asking price over the competition. I wasn't convinced by ASUS of being a better quality noteboook than ACER sales pitch. What I didn’t tell the sales person was that my ASUS K40AB got fried on the 2 day of ownership which was replaced with a new set. Powering off the K40AB & left it for full charging somehow caused the burned circuit & the notebook couldn’t be powered on again. So is this quality issue or just pure bad luck? The 2nd new unit worked fine until today however.

Anyway back to the ACER, the machine ran hot with the ATI graphic card enabled especially at the left palm rest area which made typing unpleasant. Battery life as reported by professional reviews put the ACER at about 3hrs of actual use (gaming + wifi). However if you put the machine on power saving mode (pressing the” P” button), disabling the dedicate graphic card in favour of onboard Intel GMA & tweaking the power setting, LCD brightness, disabling the CD-ROM made a significant changes in the battery power life & heat output. Now if I could totally eliminate the heat from the left palm rest area that would be ideal. I notice most of the Pentium or i3 notebooks don’t suffer from as much heat problem at the left palm rest area as the i5 although both chips is rated 35W. Perhaps I need to open up the machine & mod a better thermal shield & risk void warranty....

Snap shot below, 99.6% of battery charge could power the notebook for another 5.5hrs (typing work & surfing with wifi on). Very impressive indeed as such battery power life is close to the low performance Intel SU / Atom chip notebooks.

Thought there is not 4745 club. Finally there is .... Nice

Totally agree with you about the heat from left palm area. I am guessing that part is the gpu????
I think i need to get DIY cooling fan and place a fan right under the left palm area of the laptop.

how about this image for the thumbnail of this thread?

Well, both GPU & HDD generate heat as we speak...but for games and intensive use of the GPU, it will be hotter than HDD..for HDD, the temp seems good as in idle @37C (guessing in a cool temp room)...

I agree when playing intensive games, the laptop tend to get hottt, especially the air vent (thats what its call right) the one to the left hahaha. But gaming wise, I'm rpetty happy, can play crysis on high, Sims 3 no problem, COD6 ...really great laptop smile.gif

That kind of hot running notebook is not my cup of tea. It won't last very long in my hands at that temperature. Looking for notebook that can last for at least 2 years (without having to claim warranty - the last thing I want to do - time wasting).

For the warranty. Is it come as standard 3 years or you get an extended one?

btw if really say so, then i may buy a Cooler Master Infinite 4sub for this notebook at home.

actually, fbing, surfing or just playing music does not cause the laptop to run very hot, or even warm.. its actually quite cool. Its when you start playin INTENSIVE games, like COD6 or Crysis that it starts to heat up, games like chess or flash games wont cause it to heat up.

Not need to worry about this. I also plan to buy this laptop tomorrow morning.
Air cond room definitely does help a lot in reducing your laptop temperature compare to any cooler.
I am mad with my xpsm1530 because the graphic chipset keep spoiled. Even surfing net and do assignment can make my m1530 super hot.

Actually not hot la. I used it at non air-cond place, the temp is around 35-45C average.

Putting any sticker at the laptop cover will void the warranty ah?

Hey guys my model is slightly different,it's 4740-332G50.Pretty similiar la just the proc and gc only.

When I measure the temp using Speedfan, the GPU temp is 50 celcius blink.gif

Core 0,1,2 and 3 is pretty ok around 40 celcius +.

When I put on my lap,it feels quite warm.I'm wearing normal cotton shorts.

Is the temp and warmth normal??

I'm in a non-aircond room btw,in the afternoon now.

TS you should change the topic title la,make this thread the fan club or discussion thread or something, where users of this laptop gather and discuss about this lappy.

'Battery life' sounds as if u just asking bout the battery life.

hm, actually hot laptops does not mean won't last. My S42 is approaching 2 years, (november) Idle gpu temp =60 ish and gaming is 75-85 range... no need warrenty before.

also SDR showed in GPUZ is because the gpu is new, so it doesn't detect accurately. iirc it should be ddr2

Wow RM780 just for 80GB,with that kind of money I can get maybe 2 Western Digital 1TB hard disk, but of course SSD is fast.

My laptop installs things quite slowly, mine is 4740G-332G50,the HDD it seems 5400RPM,it is 500GB capacity, but installing stuff like The Sims 3 took nearly an hour shakehead.gif

It's still new by the way,not much things installed on it except for AVG,Spybot,CCleaner,Firefox and the likes. No games in it except those games from Acer.

Why is it like that ? hmm.gif

Anyone found a way to have the WIFI turned off by default when reboot?

Added on May 4, 2010, 10:37 amAny idea what is the procedure to setup the display driver? I tried uninstalled it and resinstalled the display driver but failed to go into windows 7.

By the way, is the sleep mode work on your laptop? Mine failed to wake up from sleep mode, and since then cant boot into windows unless i restore it to previous restore point.

Any idea? Thanks.

I tried to uninstall > driver sweeper > install new driver. But they excluded out the switchable gpu. So end up have to revert back to the original version.

Hey guys, I desperately need your help. Got myself the Acer 4745G during last month's PC fair as well, but it went 'KONG' (blackout) last week out of a sudden sad.gif Tried restarting it with and w/o the battery but it only managed to run Windows 1 out of 20 attempts. Was too caught up with work recently so hadn't got the time to send it to the service center (BTW, I heard the service center "Highpoint" is really a turn off).

The saddest part is I haven't installed ANYTHING into it yet (NOTHING!! no games, no programs, no whatever sh*t!), other than just transferring a few pictures from my phone. I only used it to watch 2 movies through DVD and that's it. When i switch the power on, the power supply LED will light up blue but the HDD light will NOT! I'm expecting that it must be the HDD which is having problems or something. Please do correct me if I'm wrong smile.gif

Still considering whether to pay Highpoint a visit this weekend or not, but I really hope that the experts here in Lowyat would be able to solve the problem or give helpful advice!

Thank you guys first smile.gif

yes most likely its the harddrive, seeing as booting up is also problematic. have you tried booting form different harddrive? that would be the best way to check whether your harddrive is the problem.

Guise, I wanna ask.

I just bought this Acer Aspire 4745G yesterday.
I wonder why when i press Fn+F3 (to enable wireless or bluetooth),
the button seems to work otherway?
I press ON, device goes OFF.
I press OFF, device goes ON.

Or is it meant to be like that?

I got this problem on this acer one. it won't play games even after change the bios setting to set the VGA for direct GPU unit, since it cause me problem trying to play game like Splinter Cell Conviction, which when playing it, it actually using the Intel GMA GPU, not the ATi Discreet GC.

I want to queer this whether any of you guys have any GC related problem when playing certain intensive games??

And every time i want to play the aforemention game, it always fail that i don't have 2Gb memory and couldn't not play the games???

Originally the BIOS state it Hybrid. so my conclusion is to change it to Direct GPU. And course my aforemention problems start crop out.

Btw its fix, i recommend to update in the Intel Graphic Driver and ATi Driver to a new one, which is resolve the hybrid problem issue.

Any new driver for this specific switchable graphics model?

Played a couple of games since I got this lappy a month ago.
GRID, L4D, MW2, BC2, GTAIV, SF4, NSF U.Cover

For me, it performs OK.
Just cannot set some of the newer games too high.
But GTAIV is a bad port.

I think older Acer model got smaller power adapter.
AFAIK, most Acer power adapters are interchangeable.

Anyone can do me a favour by capturing the main bios screen for me? After sending in for MB replacement, the info was not set back correctly. By the way, you may mask out the important inof like your serial number. Thanks.

Hmm...I seldom uses battery except during my classes.

If just reading Ms Word documents, probably 4~5 hours if under power saving.
Other than that just 2~2.5 hours.

Thanks. My bluetooth Icon missing since forever. tongue.gif
YouTube's 720p and 1080p HD is still below par for me. I do a lot of HD uploading on YT so I can see the loss of quality there. But for casual viewers it's okay, since YouTube is purely optimized for quality + compression.
But still, using flash on browsers will take up a lot of CPU power..
You guys might upgrade to Flash Ver. 10.1 too since it has added GPU acceleration capability.

Yeah me too. If at home, mostly just plugged in.

TBH, this laptop isn't really hot. I've laid on the couch and put it thigh for a few hours. It's pretty cool.
Of course, one might stay away from playing intensive games like that. laugh.gif

If warcraft is not that hot, just that some very intensive game like Civ 4 really can make the laptop hot shocking.gif

True. So I use fan cooler if Im'ma gonna play games. laugh.gif

BTW, how's everyone's webcam functioning?
For me, the camera is quite crap.

Even my dad's 4 year old C2D Acer's Crystal Eye webcam have more depth and fluidity. Sigh.

Not only that, I have a problem with the lan driver too. Wireless works good though.

For now, I'm using vmware image. So it works but not fluid enough, slight problems here and there.
Might work on dual boot and finding the best distro. It's damn hard. shakehead.gif

But seriously, OSX is plenty easy.

hmm i am interested in this question too as the price diff is small between the two model.

i know the 4820 is thinner, only got 3usb vs 4usb, 1yr warranty vs 3yrs, higher capacity battery but the keyboard flex badly unlike the 4745g hmm.gif

Well, 4820TG offer you a more stylist design (TimelineX series) and long hours battery life (8 hours) while 4745G is a normal aspire series, the spec is the same so go with either one is still good nod.gif

well, if the timeline's battery life is accurate at around 7-8 hours and you're main concern is battery power, better take that cause the 4745G would probably max out at around 5 with intel graphics and all the power saving options turned on

You can check out Lyn's Hackintosh Thread

I personally haven't tried the real deal yet and is quite difficult to set up. What I ran before this is a vmware image copy of Snow Leopard. So some things are out of the question.

I also worried about the drivers. Atheros driver might come as a problem.

Well, go to BIOS and see the HDD connection setting, if its on AHCI mode then its might be why you are having problem installing XP because normal XP installation cannot detect AHCI unless you tweak the installation CD icon_rolleyes.gif..need to change it to IDE tongue.gif

OMG. Thread died out.

Oh btw,
My webcam is laggy. How to fix that?
My dad's Acer Webcam is a beauty. 4745G like crap. sleep.gif

Also, anyone tried out JoliCloud OS?
I can't run it. My bro can with his dell. Maybe it's the dual GPUs.

Another thing, does your lip close fully? I mean snug fit?
If my display is stretched out till max, sometimes the hinge will make it hard to fully close and have noticeable gap.

One more, laugh.gif
Do your drive bay have slight movement tolerance when closed?

Overall experience after 4 months of using 4745G:

Pros:
- Switchable graphics = sweet battery life, can reach ~5hours
- Nice ATI HD 5470, capable to play low-mid gaming ( some latest game with lowest setting )
- Acceptably nice design from Acer
- Cheap

Cons:
- High temperature issues especially when playing graphical games
- Crappy build-in video cam
- Very annoying Caps Lock pop-up, especially when playing games
- No Catalyst upgrade because of switchable graphics (you can still upgrade but with no switchable graphics)
- Not-so-good LED LCD screen, need to adjust at certain angle for better view
- A bit loose lid
- Quiet weak speaker (despite of Dolby Home Theater Virtual SurroundSound system... doh.gif )

Recommendations (IMHO though...) :
- Upgrade your RAM to at least 4GB for better performance
- Uninstall any useless Acer applications+ trial games
- Use GOOD laptop cooler for intense gaming, and try to focus at left side of laptop
- Find yourself a good earphone/speaker/headphone. Believe me, you'll need it...

Overall: thumbup.gif Nice laptop for expendable battery lifespan and switchable graphics, but not very recommended for heavy gamers.
(7/10)

Question though. If the warranty seal sticker at the back of laptop 'broken' (torn up) when we try to open the back casing (for example RAM upgrade), will the warranty void?

Bolded above. That's very true.
The lid.. I have solved the gap issue by closing the lip in a fast pace. If slow, the hinge will get laggy and stuck.
The LCD viewing range sucks. when you have black BG's it won't look good. The lighting doesn't blend in whichever angle you put it. doh.gif
But some games like BC2 I can play medium setting, left 4 dead medium and ect. mostly medium.
Too bad it ain't coming with HD5650 though. That is great.
Same with encoding. I do a lot of raw HD video encoding (HDTV streams and what not), temperature will jump and gets a lil warm on the left palm rest. (Not very noticeable like MBP though)

I have all of the above too. essential for me soon. biggrin.gif
ubuntu rocks. But my bro used it and it seems to suck the battery real bad. Haven't really tried intensely with mine though.
But there's some issue with the GPU & network drivers.
If you manage to get online using LAN cable, tell me ASAP as I can only get it online using wireless. smile.gif

I never touched the bios. I just keep it the way it is since there's no problems.

Oh by the way, today I've got my hands on a Acer brochure, 4741G seems to have different design right?
Looks like no shiny sidebar and less metallic feel.

But I for once, wanna own MBP though even if it's damn expensive.
Their specs quite decent nowadays apart from their price lah.
But I mainly like it because of their solid unibody quality. smile.gif

Nope. Just press the power saving button to on/off.

Probably I'll reformat the whole laptop since my system is getting slower. Boot also takes few minutes sweat.gif

But I do have a problem with the shutting down.
It's marginally slow for my standards.

I don't have lots of processes though.

I got a different version of 4745G:

i5-460M 2.53 ghz
radeon 5650 1gb vram (Class 2 gpu according to notebookcheck.net)

Games I've played so far:

COD:MW2 = Runs very nicely on highest settings (Left the textures on "Auto" though. It'll get laggy if maximum all the time...)
SF4 = Highest setting (with AA turned off tongue.gif Must be a bug even at 2x the FPS drops 50%. But at 1366 res you don't need AA)
Starcraft2 = High Profile. Doesn't work too well on Ultra, but still very playable.

The Laptop gets hot but I think the heat gets exhausted pretty well for such a thin laptop. I do use a notebook cooler all the time @home.

SPEAKER SUCKS! Camera isn't that good either. Also no 56k modem. My old 4520 is better for these things.

Anyone know if the switchable graphics switches automatically or manually ? I haven't tried it yet (put it on discrete).

AND if you put another 2GB RAM in do you get all 4GB according to Windows (WinKey+Pause). Mine says 3.87gb usable with discrete graphics only and 3.68gb usable with Switchable....sad.gif

My old 4520 uses all 4GB (Win7 x64 4GB DDR2).

Thanks for any reply biggrin.gif

Hmm that's a hassle. But you don't need optimus to have automatic switching. Optimus is a bit smarter than normal automatic switching, it knows (profiles) graphic intensive apps and switches accordingly on the fly. Some non optimus (nvidia) laptops switches to intel when on battery and back to discrete on ac power...so this laptop can't do that ? That is disappointing.

Also if anyone can try this:

Put you laptop on discrete graphics only (in BIOS) and try to refresh your Windows Experience Index. Mine always crashes (BSOD).

Current WEI (with Switchable): 5.9

Processor: 6.9
Memory: 5.9 (I wager this gets higher if I actually have the full 4gb usable)
Graphics: 6.7
Gaming: 6.7
HD: 5.9 (because it's 5400rpm)

If that's what you mean by automatic switching, it should be able to done it, but I thought by default it should be like that, no?

mine 3GB ram also get 5.9
and as for HDD, you would need SSD to go higher than 5.9
even if you get 7200RPM Momentus XT, it will still 5.9

Can you refresh your WEI on discreet only though ? You don't get BSOD-ed ?

Oh okay about the HD. But SSD is too small and expensive for my uses.

Also I checked with my friends Vaio laptop also i5, radeon 5650, the 4gb ram doesn't get used fully either. Must be something about ati or i-core cpus that takes some of the RAM off, for something...

Wow this thread is so quiet, my old 4520 was a bit more popular. Is this laptop like the ugly duckling of acer. hehe.

Yeah. A bit on the expensive side but the quality is immaculate.
Then there's no need to get pissed off wiping the smudges everything.
Top, it looks awesome.

I wonder why. The disappearance of glossy lid cover model?

Yeah. I think I need to upgrade the ram.
How much is 2GB RAM nowadays?
How much slot?

You have 4GB RAM right?
How's the startup speed?

I think I'll upgrade to Momentus XT + additional 2GB RAM.
Care to recommend some cheap but durable rams?

My startup is around 2+ minutes. Too many junk file inside. Should be faster actually.

I upgraded from day 1 I bought the lappy. Kingston 2GB smile.gif
My next upgrade probably HDD. You get the Momentus then tell me the result nod.gif

I haven't really timed my startups also.
Might do with both Windows & Ubuntu. biggrin.gif
There's some bug with Ubuntu on acer though, the main probem is it can't detect the batt. status.
Wil find out ways to get out of this. Ubuntu is awesome for a free source.

Kingston? Good reputation for me. tongue.gif

Okay, but won't be that soon. I wonder how fast will it be booting up and opening heavy apps.. drool.gif

You can try. brows.gif
I think it should.

But isn't it a bit too much? Not all apps can take all of the 8GB's though.
Unless you open Vegas, Photoshop, Premier at one time. laugh.gif

My ram has always been idling and with some apps on (Rainmeter, Rocketdock, skins, cd art display, browser) at 50 - 60%

Quite high imo.
But still runs OK.

How's yours?

Anyways, miscelleneous.. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

didn't know there was a thread for this laptop

anyways, my review after 6 month of usage.

its quite a powerful laptop, but the given 2gb ram is surely not sufficient for daily usage. Even on idling mode, the ram usage is 1.6gb. Imagine opening googlechrome with 10tabs of youtube. Recommend go for 4gb of ram.

Im a casual gamer, i play games like team fortest 2, starcraft2, l4d and cod7. I don't really play long, because i suffer from motion sickness for fps games. so max i will usually play for 2 hours. This laptop is surprisingly good at gaming. This laptop also suffers from heat from the left palm area. I can't solve that problem yet. I also bought a cooler master infinity for cooling purpose. Im not sure about the result, because i don't know how to check, and when im at home, i usually hook it up to my monitor,keyboard,mouse.. So i can't really feel the heat.

The bad part about this laptop is that, the keyboard gets laggy when you switch it to the powersave mode. Im not sure if you guys are having the same problem as me. But its sure laggy. And also, the gloss on the side of the monitor, and the cover, its like a fingerprint magnet. But after 6 month, i don't really care about already. And also 1 thing i don't really like is the keyboard attract alot of dust and it's very hard to clean.

well, thats all from me biggrin.gif

From what I searched, adding the maximum amount of memory will improve performance and help extend the useful life of your system as you run increasingly demanding software applications in the future.

It might be wrong though. And yes, it can support 8GB

Nope, unfortunately it can't.

If you have XP, it'll ask you to upgrade to Win& if you plan to install it.
But can for Linux OSes and Windows dualboot.

Added on February 13, 2011, 4:18 pmI don't think you can get this model anymore. hmm.gif

There's better specced Acer models out there now, you should get it.

i5 480M, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD, newer generation ATi GPUs @ RM2.4K

Yes
27~28 mb/second for 7.84gb file

Ok. I've found out that FW 1.28 = 25nm chip. Maybe that's the cause of the slow rate sad.gif

51.1gb for C:

I think I'll use it as my boot drive and also to run programming/photoshop better. Since most of my read/write is on the stock HDD from my laptop.

I guess its this issue..
QUOTE
Drives are now shipping with 25nm NAND. This is the next die shrink the industry has been preparing to move to. One effect of the die shrink is the traces being closer together. Because of this the NAND is not as robust as the previous generation in regards to the voltage needed for writes and erases. This made necessary a reduction in the rated P/E cycles. The most common P/E cycle rating being 3000 now instead of the previous 5000.

To still provide a drive with a reasonable life expectation the amount of NAND set aside for over-provisioning has been increased by a few GB. So, for instance on a 120GB drive, if you see an unformatted capacity of 115GB this is perfectly normal.

Any questions concerning the move to 25NM NAND as it relates to drive size should be asked in this thread. Any new threads started related to this will be closed with a link posted to this thread. Also, please remember this is the support section of the forum. If you have a suggestion or complaint about the use of 25nm NAND use the appropriate section of the forum for those posts. Any post of a non-technical nature in this thread will be removed. Thanks.

No difference, 1333Mhz will downclock to 1066Mhz since that is the one supported by your CPU..
Unless the 1333Mhz is the same price with 1066Mhz one, no need to pay extra for 1333Mhz...

Everything speed up except the writing/reading but still it's faster than the stock HDD.

Probably thinking to get another one in the future when the price is affordable tongue.gif

Certain 60GB is less than Rm400. Must ask for best price biggrin.gif
Now does ram >4GB ram will do any wonder to the speed? hmm.gif

If I have a desktop right now, I'd consider.

But laptop, have to sacrifice DVDWriter if can. Cannot leave out DATA. sweat.gif

But what my friend said also not bad,
SSD 60GB, use 16GB thumbdrive for downloading then transfer to exHDD.

Only for downloading, won't necessarily fill the space. Just download and transfer, slow also nevermind. Just data only. tongue.gif

If I'd get SSD in near future, I think I'll go for 128GB. sweat.gif

By the way, bought and placed the additional 1333MHz 2GB ram. On idle, it's 30%, half of the resource cut off. laugh.gif

Loading apps are much more faster, such as Lightroom and explorer especially thumbnail generation.

Oh yeah,

Hooked to an external 1080p monitor before the upgrade.
Recorded and just for show (+ other purpose only) laugh.gif

Without A/C room, my CPU is generally 50~56C

Well, they both have the same TDP and since you are going to replace the thermal paste as well, maybe can get lower temp..

GPU, no upgrade.

MBP 13"? nod.gif

Shashinki have that. Which is great.

Anyway, I plugged in my battery this 2 weeks and the battery level changed to 12.7% from 20%.
I'm guessing it's calibration problem?

hey guys..recently i've encountered a problem which is my intel gadget is showing that intel turbo boost technology monitor has encountered a problem

from what i've read turbo boost is almost equal to overclocking and from googling around i found an answer that when the laptop time span of around couple of months it would collect dust and it would become hotter so the intel turbo boost is turned off

is that true??or is it just my gadget is having a prblem..somebody plss shed the light

Try reinstall the camera software/webcam driver ?

The beeping sound, does it occurs when you are in BIOS ? or only when inside Windows?

Though I've lost my Acer. I can say that this is normal. The thin frame makes it easier to have heat build up.

Hi there,

I know this is old thread, but I hope some of you are still watching it.

I have the 4745G (i5-430M version). I am trying to upgrade it to 8GB (2x4GB) but am having problem with resuming from sleep, that is the laptop will not just resume normally but instead it restarts and then goes
to safe mode. Other operations are normal.

Seems like the laptop cannot provide enough power to power-up the RAM modules from sleep state. And also it looks like quite a common problem among laptops prior to 2011 that try to have 8GB RAM. I also tested using only 1x4GB stick, and still get the same problem.

So I just wonder if any of you have this laptop and have successfully upgraded it to 8GB RAM (2x4GB) or perhaps just 1x4GB will help me mention what compatible memory modules you use in your system.

Thanks,
Lunk

Did anyone manage to find the Windows 8 drivers for this laptop model?

Hey guys. lol.

Anyone know how to flash bios using a pendrive?

Cuz i switched the bios setting to discrete graphic only. then the laptop starts up with fan spinning, black screen and LED light. I think my ATI card failed and i need to set it back to intel.

Please help. Thank you.
