The main diff between the AD series and A series of the ATH line is that AD = open, A = closed
and if you're planning to get AD900 for gaming, may I humbly suggest you also audition the dt880 from beyer? The price is similar and it wouldn't hurt to try both before you decide

From what I've read, stereo headphones with big soundstage (AD700, DT880) combined with a soundcard that has dolby headphones seems to work wonders....I haven't tested since I'm too broke to spring on a X-fi or something similar

IMO, it's the price, ad900 and dt880 goes up to nearly 1k
and from the experience of a friend whom i introduced to Jaben, he says that the dt880 beats the ad900 by a large margin....he actually got poisoned and got it a few days later
but as always, audition first and trust your ears
