I know it's a bit hard to describe, but what do you mean by different between the two? I know it's a closed can design but that's about it.

I have read quite a few comparison and some even said it is a 701 killer.

I like to try it but trouble is I am in London and I don't know where I can try.

It's hard for 1 headphone to kill another.
Due to different sound signature, if i remember correctly based on my previous observation on both k701 and w1000x, both sounded different.

k701 is towards bright sounding and
w1000x sounded slightly warm (perhaps i prefer bright cans), and with the special effects (natural tree sound) that describe by bro Akabane, lol.

i may suggest ath-ad1000prm to you (bright sounding), which i am currently using...
if k701 sounded like you are standing at the center of big open field, ad1000prm will sound like you are standing on the top of the hill.

I tried ad1000prm at Jaben, still far far away from ad2000. Maybe the Jaben's can havent burn-in, but from what i remember, everything is in a mess in ad1000prm.

I think you are referring to instrument separations, especially there's a lot of instruments playing.

Took the plunge and went for W1000X. 





The sound signature is really different from AKG K701, I must say for what you pay for K701, it is an excellent headphone.  However the W1000X is more exciting to listen to than the K701 although bearing in mind I can buy two K701 with the price of on W1000X. 

The soundstage on W1000X is good and the sound is warmer than K701.  It sounds wonderful with classical music, in particular the lush sound on the cello/violin. 

My only complain is the headphone feels a bit lose on the head and doesn't give a secure feeling like the K701. 

All in all, I'm now an AT fan (and also AKG )!

I returned the Valhalla as the money meant for a new amp got diverted to this AT cans thanks to a broken AKG. 

I would guess that a tube amp would go well with the W1000X?  For something priced similar to the cans, has anyone got any idea what would be a good tube amp? I'm currently running it from Headfive.

Hmmm.. The HA-02 should be about twice the price of the W1000x though...

I've read quite a few good reviews on the Yamamoto but yeap, the price is outside my budget

By the way, I noticed that burn in makes a difference to W1000X as the sound seems to have 'tighten' up after about 30 hours burn in.

well. the AT gathering have woodies, just no w5000 which is what im curious with actually ><

i dont see myself purchasing anymore headphones as at the end of the day i still favor open speakers more than anything. that could probably change if the pads for flagship/higher end reference headphones can actually solve my sweating issue. i know for a fact that the comfort level/quality of higher end headphones do beat out lower range ones ^^;

well thats what the page says, its not sold anywhere like ebay/amazon, so price could be very much higher

Really miss the "ATH-W11JPN with yamamoto" combo setup to be honest.I hope those who are going there soon will enjoy what I already been through during last time with that particular setup.

unless the mic does not require a clip on/hook onto ear, i dont think it will be suitable

haha i see. btw i just did a damn ghetto quick mod on the crossroads stand. remember the sponge thingy that akabane took out from his hippo case? i took that out, cut it, and stick 4x small sponge thingy with blu tac to the cross roads stand. voila no more metal marks on the headphone pad LOL
