Super easy.

Bring up your phone dialer. (Press the phone icon, lol)

Then key in the following code:

*#*#4636#*#*

Then go to "PHONE INFORMATION" > and scroll down to "SET PREFERRED NETWORK TYPE" > then just select WCDMA ONLY for ONLY 3G signal, if your signal drops off, you can always come back here and switch to GSM.

Mind you WCDMA eats a bit more battery compared to GSM. But then you understand why la, since you get 3G. =)

You can download an app called "SECRET SETTINGS". Does basically what I just said above, but more, and slightly faster la, and gives you a few more options to play with. =)
Yup. Factory reset will wipe everything botak. Haha. But if you're rooted, then the phone remains rooted though. No way to unroot.
