I think there will be no noticeable increase in performance judging from how a normal user would utilize the i7 and a quad core rather than imbalance.

Why didn't you ask her to opt for 64-bit? Since everybody is going to move towards that path in future anyway. Is it because the applications she uses doesn't have 64-bit support?
