Added on April 30, 2010, 1:01 amhow do they prove i'm a student?

and if i get a macbook and i want to link it to my desktop monitor, must i get extra cables? is the cables to connect included in the box? i'm using a samsung monitor.

and seems like they don't have speakers/headphone for macbook. can i use ipod headphone to link to my macbook?
*
speakers/headphones dun have "for macbook". most speakers and headphones use the same 3.5mm jack. cheap rm30 ones, ipod headphone, even rm2k ones, all use the same jack. no matter for notebooks or mp3 players or old walkmans

as far as i know, they dont ask for proof that you're a student

yes u need extra cables. depends what input can your samsung monitor receive. a macbook uses MiniDisplayPort. so for example, you samsung monitor needs DVI, then u need a MiniDisplayPort-to-DVI adapter

@dvlzplayground: yaaa. my monitor got holes instead of pins. exactly same ammount of holes.
*
shudn't u get the programs ur uni/college requires u to? the whole adobe range is available in mac versions, maybe u'll want photoshop, illustrator and indesign. google sketchup maybe good for u too.

about the monitor, afaik there's an adapter for that, called VGA female-to-male converter. female means the end with holes, male is the one with pins. im not kidding tongue.gif

Is it worth getting the Air or should I get an iPad instead?

*
VRAM mostly lets u use more/higher quality textures in games. i suggest i7 if u can afford smile.gif

no one can be sure. juz because 1 unit very hot doesnt mean every single unit is hot. we all know got case where MBP explode etc but u dont see every single MBP in the world explode. read a few pages back on what i said about manufactured products. worst case, u can claim warranty.
don't think so..now mac already have the now i5 and i7 for the mbp 15 and 17

acpp = applecare protection plan. it extends ur warranty for 2 years, so u end up with total 3 years warranty, with tech support

WTA : we all know that MAC OS is virus-free OS..but what if i opt to install windows on MAC..does it still vulnerable to the viruses and as such? this my first time using MAC OS..has anyone ever encountered crashes or corruption over MAC OS? i know windows always do..is it save for me to not have partitions rather than keeping my files on 1 partition?
*
actually virus can go in OSX, it's just that it cant do anything. e.g. if i copied an infected file from a friend's thumbdrive, then i'll have the virus in my mac...but it wont affect OSX at all. but then if i share that same file to another windows friend, n he download it, he'll get infected. can understand? :S

so if u install windows (either bootcamp or VM), yes you can get virus. if the virus come into ur windows system, then it'll infect windows. if it come into OSX, no problem.

crashes can happen to any system...but i realize it's far far less in OSX compared to windows. about corruption, so far i only had 1 corrupted file in my 4 years using mac smile.gif personally i dont see y people like to save different files on different partitions...what's so bad about folders?

hmm, am i mistaken or was there a virus in the wild already??????? oh on a lighter note teh bootcamp partition separates the two partition so that windoze dont screw up the mac partition, its always the case isnt it?. Ok heres the thing remember in OSX not to put yourself as an ADMIN, make a separate Admin account and relegate your primary as a standard user, just in case someone wants to remotely control something.
*
im wondering if this is still true? bootcamp 3.0 can write to the OSX partition right? so virus can go in OSX partition? no effect la, but juz wondering if it's possible

In what way a windows virus can affect OSX files? This you need to understand a virus characteristic. It delivers a payload once executed or the condition in right and target the system vulnerability. Windows and OSX have different vulnerability i.e. different kernel, file system etc. What is an executable in windows is not in OSX. So the virus can't execute it's command in OSX where it's not familiar with. A virus exploit the system vulnerabilities.

On the other hand, we can see that OSX is getting a foothold on the computer industries compared to like 10 years ago. OSX user base have grown a substantial numbers, so I would not be surprised if there would be "viruses" written specifically for OSX in the near future. The anti-virus industry is a big money thing. Last time, the OSX user is so small that it's not beneficial or profitable to virus writers or anti-virus companies (which sometimes I think writes these viruses - hahaha conspiracy theory).
p/s - I stand corrected. A quick google on Mac OS X viruses shows a few viruses for OSX already circulating i.e. HellRaiser Trojanhorse aka OSX/HellRTS.D (http://www.securemac.com/hellrtsd.php). Like any trojanhorse, user need to execute the virus first to release the payload.

Another virus Leap-A (probably written as a proof of concept) spread thru iChat IM (http://news.techworld.com/security/5392/worlds-first-os-x-virus-hits-apple/).

And the best thing

thx for the long long reply haha. but ya i know the virus is unexecutable on OSX. that's why i'm asking about bootcamp or VM

bootcamp 3.0 can access n write on the mac partition right? so does that mean the files in Mac HD can get infected by virus? let's say i'm in bootcamp in windows 7, somehow caught a virus, and the virus infected a file named random.pdf, which is located in Mac HD. then i boot back in OSX, i email the random.pdf to a windows friend, and he'll get the virus too. am i correct?

same thing with VM. lets say i shared my Pictures folder in VM. and somehow i caught a virus in windows. can the virus infect the files in the shared folder? and same thing lah...if i email the files (regardless in OSX or windows) to a windows friend, they can get infected?

QUOTE(izact @ May 2 2010, 06:12 PM)
hehehe..there is nothing wrong of having folders on the same partition..it's just that i had been using windows for years..and the traumas of losing files and corrupted data when windows crashed still rings the bell..ive been asking a lot bout this partitioning that ive come to solution now as advised..thanks guys..

1 thing though..can i run applications or games that were installed on MAC from WINDOWS or the other way around?
*
lol. consider a backup system, much much better than doing partition hehe. windows crash nevermind....what if ur HDD kaput? u got 10 partition also all will be gone. dead HDDs are more common than what u're probably thinking

applications n games for mac n windows are totally different. as u know, windows use .exe and mac uses .app. windows cannot open .app and OSX cannot open .exe. the only way to do this is using virtual machines. there's a thread about Parallel Desktop, VMWare Fusion here, i recommend u go check it out smile.gif

QUOTE(frozzbyte @ May 3 2010, 02:41 PM)
If bootcamp have direct/full access to mac partition, then the example random.pdf (but mostly would be *.exe files) thats been infected/modified by the virus would be transmitted to your friend if you email/passed on to him. This is more like a trojan horse then virus, since it needs human intervention. Viruses will only propagate and spread itself if you're on your windows thru bootcamp/vmware/parallels. That's why you need to use antivirus on bootcamp/vmware/parallels even on Apple Mac system (not the OS X itself). If you sent an infected file, regardless from OS X or Windows, the other party using windows will get caught.

If you read the article from macforensicslab.com, there's a definition on what is virus, trojan horse and worms.

So ... careful when sending stuff to your windows friend. Kesian sama dia.  biggrin.gif . That's why I disabled windows having full access to OS X partition in parallels.

p/s - The links and article I posted is to share that Mac/OS X are not virus free. In fact the first virus created was for Mac back in those days. So if Apple evangelist still say that Mac do not have viruses, they are wrong. Only that viruses for OS X is not as rampant as those in windows.
*
thanks for the confirmation. haha true also, too long on OSX i forgot the difference between virus, trojan n worm dy tongue.gif im just using windows security essentials on my XP VM..hopefully it's okay

cscheat ur temp 70C? in ur screenshot it says 39C only tongue.gif 70C is pretty normal when under load

Owh, so the problem is more to that the MBP is built from aluminium? Should be ok then. I have this Zalman notebook cooler and i think it's able to cool the bottom part of the laptop pretty well.
If possible I wouldn't even wan to install windows.. Heard that it messes up the com after a while. My friend dual boot his lappie to play WOW and now even when he's running OSX it becomes laggy.

sorry for the noob question. Is OSX = Snow leopard? or is it one version before the Snow Leopard?
*
"OSX" is like "Windows", "Snow Leopard" (or 10.6) is the version, like "XP", "Vista" or "7".

about ur friend's mac, i dun think windows is the problem. maybe cuz his OSX too unorganized dy. try Onyx or defrag it

Oh... thanks for the info.. i always thought that OSX is like Vista and Snow Leopard is like Windows 7, as in Snow Leopard is the new OS. Ok, will note that down and tell my friend to give it a try. Is reformatting on MBP a hassle or easier compared to Windows?
*
oo hehe no no… the full name of SL is "Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard". before this was "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard", "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger", and so on. so the next OS will be something like "Mac OS X 10.7 [some huge cat's name]" tongue.gif

yes all stores have the same price for new units. probably some stores can give u freebies n stuff. cheapest way is to get from online store with education discount, but no freebies la (unless u consider shipping as a freebie tongue.gif)

the compression depends on what file are u zipping. for already compressed formats lke JPEG, MP3, very hard to compress further. this is true on any operating system

browser depends on individual. i dun really like opera's interface, but the Turbo mode is very useful when i cant get good internet connection. i prefer firefox due to extensions, but chrome beats vanilla firefox IMO biggrin.gif plus, firefox 3.7 should have sandboxing feature like chrome

8gb ram only helps if u're doing lots of work on it (which i can't imagine why u would, since u already have the i7 imac). SSD supposedly helps with battery life. so i vote for SSD if 128gb is enuff smile.gif

QUOTE(Qubezo @ May 6 2010, 10:06 PM)
Hey sorry guys. I'm quite new to Mac (just bought the new MacBook White few weeks back). I have a question on the battery health care. Since MacBook White has a non-removable battery, suppose, is it okay if I just put on the power cord to charge my MacBook even if the battery indicator shows 100%?

I find it a bit troublesome to keep recharging everything when the battery drains, so I'm  thinking of continuing the charging process even if the battery is full as if like I'm using a laptop without the battery. My battery is showing a health of 88% with 65 cycles. Do you think I should call Apple Care?

It seems like I could only use my MacBook for 5 hours with 30% screen brightness and I charge my MacBook almost twice everyday due to heavy usage. I scared my battery isn't working properly.
*
just keep the charger on, it's okay. if it's not, apple wouldn't have created a non-removable battery in the 1st place, don't u think? smile.gif IINM only apple n sony laptops are okay with this

heavy usage at 30% brightness for 5 hours is pretty good (of course, it depends on what 'heavy usage' is). 88% after 65 cycles is quite low i think, try to calibrate it first.

Aww, so the battery won't like blow or something? Haha. I'm just afraid if anything bad happens. I was almost screaming my lungs out after looking at the battery price in Apple Store :T When I mentioned "heavy usage" I meant I turn on the computer like for hours (this explains the part where I recharge almost twice everyday). How do I calibrate exactly? I'm using iStart Pro widget to see my battery status, maybe it varies with the actual one?
