Yep. Which is why you'll notice 3 different driver versions. Only tried it on Splinter Cell and I would say it's really smooth compare to previous driver. Whenever I start up the game, it'll lag most of the part include starting menu. Even after I lowered the details to medium to make it smooth, it just won't do it. After driver is updated, smooth, all the way, with some settings tune up a bit, still performs better than older driver. Heat wise is the same as switchable graphics on ATI with new BIOS, ave. 50-54C, lowest 48C, highest 74C. brows.gif
*
after installing 10.4 you still can use switchable graphic?
you refresh the ATI 5650 bios?or the lenovo y460 bios ?

How bro? Set BIOS for "Switchable Graphic"??

-pWs-
*
in order to download the 10.4 cat
you need to set to dedicated graphic in bios
and download the 10.4 , this is because the ati utility will scan the hardware before download the driver, in switchable graphic the utility is unable to detect 5650
after finishing download the driver
then restart windows and set the graphic to swithcable graphic in bios
after entering in windows, switch the graphic to ati 5650, and open the 10.4 drive,
i chose custom installation
in the installation menu
i unchecked the "ati catalyst control centre"
then just click next
then during installation, the screen will go black , and unable to recover back = =' some say is the bug of 10.4 cat installer, so better sendiri agak agak the time when the installation will finish.
and then switch off the laptop and on the laptop again..then check the driver version of ur ati 5650, should be 10.4 like i have shown above tongue.gif

Ehh... Did you check your driver version?? It's still the same as the original one, which means you only have Catalyst 10.4 software installed w/o new driver upgrades on HD 5650  sweat.gif

You can see my last pic. Left: New Catalyst w/ latest driver ; Middle: Original Catalyst and driver ; Right: Original Catalyst and driver for switchable graphics.

ops~~ i was wrong sweat.gif
pai seh pai seh~~ > <

but from this my cat is 10.4 O_O

btw there is a guide for you all to install 10.4 on switchable graphics
it is kinda tedious , it is a china site

Thanks for all your help. Anyone knows which shop (which sells lenovo y460) offers 0% installment plan (without charging any processing fees)? Would like to know so that I can go straight to that shop to purchase.
*
why don't use cash ?
no charge for credit card interest as well XD

Maybe you're right. The games I play are like Rise of Nations and Medieval Total War and playing both of them will always distort my cursor. I'll try newer games to test if it's the case.

Added on May 29, 2010, 9:21 pmA correction, the game is actually Medieval 2 Total War. Is it really such an old game that ATI newer series do not support?

try to use atitools to check artifact .. it could be due to your GDDR3 defect

what is the average battery life for y460? hahah i went to lowyat today and all the seller quoted me 3699 for the laptop, some even went up to 3799. so disappointing.
*
3699 ? what extra thing they give you ?
impossible they jack up the price just for a unit of Y460!

if that is the case
i recommend you look for sony EA16
almost same spec as Y460, but a bit pricey since it is SONY @ rm3999
you get i5 520m, 5650 (underclocked), but much cooler lappy XD

from the benchmark of street fighter at full setting for sony ea16 , average is 55fps
on the other hand, y460 got 75fps average on same setting

but y460 is a good deal if you can get below rm3599 biggrin.gif

@ rubrubrub
which shop in lowyat you have visited?
i don't think they were trying to con you, brochure should have stated the price and spec, they are unable to con you, unless they misunderstand
afterall, lowyat is not the only place can get Y460, many other places can get Y460 at lower price^^
such as PJ digital mall, Mid valley, etc

@ jotaro12
i know, but i was wondering how can EA16 be so cold even running street figher 4 bench on a table without notebook cooler ?! even the heat from exhaust is also not very hot while running sf4 bench

Sounds like you've played with 1 before  brows.gif  Mind share us your experience??  tongue.gif
I would assume Sony uses better material/heat design hence better air circulation on GPU+CPU. It's a bit rare to find a thorough review on EA16(maybe didn't find hard enough...) and I can't find tear down shots like what 4820TG and Y460 has so can't figure out how EA16's heat arrangement look like  hmm.gif . One thing for sure, Sony hardly does bad designs on cooling.
*
haha not really play with it XD

other ppl just demo it using sf4 bench
the windows index for ea16
is surely less than y460

cpu only 6.2 for intel 520m
and gpu for aero and 3d gaming are also 6.2 if not mistaken
so we can see sony underclock gpu for few percentage

but the heat produced is as good as idle while loading?! the surface of keyboard as well as palm rest is very cool
perhaps that time was in air cond room, but the air cond is not very cold...
or it could be due to the stressing is not long enough hahhaa
so i can say sony has a very good heat management, this also thanks to underclocking

just got the y460. why is the right palmrest warmer than the rest of the laptop? isnt the cpu and gpu at the top left? also there some sort of whistling sound under the palmrest.

anyway, for my cpu temp, its around 33C with intel gpu idle, and 65C with ati playing games. way cooler than my last laptop, hp dv5. now deciding whether to change to ssd or not.
*
why is yours so much cooler ?O_O
what BIOS you use?
are you in air-cond ?

btw how did you get such a low temp ?
my laptop can get lowest is 38C with intel gpu on

Added on June 18, 2010, 10:26 pm

read at china article..it reduces idle state temperature but the gaming part..still maintain at high temp..

Added on June 19, 2010, 10:13 amregarding the reinstalling of win7..i am still confused about it..hopefully somebody can englighten me..
1)what is the purpose of making recovery disc?what kind of things do we store inside it?
2)since we dont have win7 disc installer,we need to download it(win7 home premium 64-bit) from microsoft?
3)after successful clean install of win7,we install driver from D: back to C : right?
4)after i am satisfied with my new OS,can i set OKR to format back to this OS(new) in future(virus or etc)..?
hope someone can solve my confusion..xD
*
1) make recovery disc = making ur own customized recovery disc , stores the thing you like to be recovered when using that disc
2) you can get from internet , make use of google
3)yea
4)i am not sure about this, since i prefer manually install rather than depends on backup bcos software always get newer and newer smile.gif

sorry for late reply,

1st u need to disable out those bloatware that is on your laptop,
you can do this by:
on the start menu, on the textbox, or, you can just press the windows + r button (on ur keyboard), and type in msconfig.
then, go to the startup tab, & disabled any non-useful application (untick those selected application)

NOTE: just make sure that the you didnt disabled out the important one (wireless, bluetooth, intel, ati, ur antivirus)
by doing this, less processes that involved, & less heat that will be produced,

you also need to set out ur power plan setting to power saver mode, and make sure that ur power play is set to
maximize performance: Previous Post regarding on power play setting

and use cooler pad  tongue.gif

just now i've use the OKR disc, yes, after i use the OKR, it reverted back to the factory setting
(just like 1st time when we switch on the laptop), all the previous data that stored on the HD will be erased.
bloatware also pre-installed LoL  smile.gif nevermind, can disabled those bloatware...

hey guys,
great news, i've managed to install MAC OS Snow Leopard OSX86 on my laptop,
i've made it by creating a new partition (that new partition is for MAC OS)

windows 7 still can be loaded (on drive C:)  rclxms.gif
i just use the OKR, then install & use the EASUS partition manager for creating the new partition,

insert the Chameleon + install MAC OS Snow Leo OSX86,
and then, on startup, u can choose between OSX86 + Windows 7 (but need the chameleon to boot up both OS)

i've tested it out on the MAC OS Snow Leo OSX86, things that can be used so far:
sound, keyboard, touchpad...

but still need tweaking on the touchpad part (there's bug where my cursor sometimes, move randomly on the MAC Screen..)
i've also tested it out by watching video's on that OS, so far so good..  rclxms.gif
*
wow
congrats
can you explain how do you install OSX86 ?
is it install using retail osx iso?

ati 5xxx work seamlessly ??
what kext you use?
you need to patch dsdt so that keyboard is working ?
