there are some serial numbers you can determine.

To summarize it, all piano have serial number. You can check on the website on where it is made on the serial number.

Added on April 12, 2010, 9:02 amthey represent different versions which include different scaling, construction and cosmetics. yeah.... they pretty confusing to consumers also dealers.... another maker from Japan, Kawai used to have even more models for a similar height piano. not only it is confusing to consumers but even to their own distributors.. today, many farny models number/prefix have been consolidated and easy to be recongnized.... then again there are still models which are confusing to consumers. most of the time the model(s) of a similar size represent different scaling, construction and cosmetics, as stated above.

before taiwan factory was closed with prefix YT => Taoyuan Hsien Taiwan (also applies to prefix M and P)
with prefix T => cabinet from Taiwan and assembly in USA (taiwan factory is ady closed. with prefix P from Thomaston)
with prefix M, P and T => Thomaston USA. However in 2007 Thomaston factory is also closed.
without prefix as above U1 = Japan
with prefix H = Hangzhou in China (also applies to prefix CN, P and T)

These are the updated list from yamaha on the serial number to determine where it is made.

Yamaha Pianos have been manufactured in 4 locations:
1) Hamamatsu, Japan
2) Thomaston, Georgia
3) South Haven, Michigan
4) Jakarta, Indonesia

As a result, there are four different serial number ranges for Yamaha pianos.

If the serial number begins with a "T", the piano was manufactured in Thomaston, Georgia. If your grand piano is a GH1G, GH1FP, GC1G, or GC1FP, your piano was manufactured in Thomaston, Georgia.

If the serial number begins with a "U", the piano was manufactured in South Haven, Michigan.

If your grand piano is a GA1E, DGA1E, GB1, or DGB1, your piano was manufactured in Jakarta, Indonesia.

If your piano is any other grand piano it was manufactured in Hamamatsu, Japan.

If your upright piano is taller than 45" it was manufactured in Hamamatsu, Japan.

If your upright piano is 45" or shorter and has seven numbers in the serial number, it was manufactured in Hamamatsu, Japan after January, 1970

Today Yamaha has manufacturing facilities at:
Kemble in U.K. since 1986
Hangzhou in China since 2003 ("H" serial prefix)
Xiaoshan in China since 1997
Taoyuan Hsien in Taiwan since 1969 ("YT" serial prefix)
Hamamatsu in Japan
Kakegawa in Japan since 1965
Iwata in Japan since 1966

Here is the line up of products distriubted:
M460, M560, P660 series are built in Taiwan.
CN116, P22, T118 series are built in China.
T121, U1, YUS1, U3, YUS3, YUS5 are built in Japan.
GB1 built in Indonisia
All the rest of the grands in Japan

I am told that some manufacturing is being phased out of Hamamatsu to expanded facilities in Kakegawa over time.

Yamaha had a joint venture factory with Pearl River in Guangzhou, China from 1995 - 2007. They build one model only to ship to U.S., the UP-125M1. I was told they built other models for far east distribution.

Yamaha's factory in Thomaston, GA, U.S. was closed March 2007. That factory built M425, M500, P600, T116, and P22 series instruments

hi Ml88, ---- I'm planning to buy used piano its M1A yamaha serial numbers 1104607. i dont have any idea what age it was. the dealer told me it was imported from japan. please help me if im going to buy it or not? or should i buy yamaha U1e serial number 568109 used piano still i don't have any idea with regards to the age, same with M1A which was imported by japan. please help.

frankly... dont waste money on these junks, M1A ~ 1970 and U1 ~ 1967... for the money you will be better wif new comparing to a used japanese, the quality new chinese piano would be a better choice than a 20,30,40,year old Yamaha...

a good digital piano will sound better than a crappy upright or a small grand piano

I am looking for a used Yamaha U2 piano, i got one which looks pretty new and its serial number is : H 2418327, how do i know how many years is this piano and where it is made from ?

a good digital piano WILL sound better than a CRAPPY upright or cheap grand piano

same can be said with a GOOD upright piano will sound WAY BETTER than a cheap baby grand

thanks for clarifying that. generally agreed with you though, but still they're apples and oranges if digital vs acoustic though.
