Hi guys, let me keep this as simple as possible:

I have finally decided to go with plasma due to it having superior performances in almost everything as compared to a conventional LCD. Also, I am viewing from a dimly lit air-con room so reflections and heat aren't problems. Plus I've heard burn-ins have been reduced for the models nowadays so it's no longer an issue.

1.) Using it to play PS3 games as well as HD movie and series viewing, including blue-rays.
2.) Budget is from 4 to 5k, cannot stretch more.
3.) Prefer 50" as I am greedy. drool.gif Viewing distance is about 6 to 7 feet. Overkill? hmm.gif
4.) Heard that Panny is the best. But open to other brands.

Please give me your recommendations guys. Thanks!!

Not sure what the current market price is but try contacting some of the owners here to get a better idea.

I've got the Pio 508x and can tell u that it'll smoke most of the entry to mid level full hd tvs in the market now.

But beware of the latest bunch of Plasma, each manufacturer seem to have some kidda issue ! Pana seem to have floating black level issue and Samsung some serious IR problems . Just going by other users here and in avs.

nope, mine is the 768p version but as I mentioned earlier still smokes many of the current 1080p panels IMHO biggrin.gif
Bought mine back in 2008 and never once have I seen an IR ( image burn-in ) on this Panel .

Compared to my other Sammy PDP, there is virtually no image retention especially after watching channels such as 8TV or Astro programs (the ones with their static logos at the upper right corner)

My Sammy tends to have a bit of image retention. Though it disappears over time, thanks to the anti burn-in technology, it still bugs me shakehead.gif

Agree with Kalido, though not Full HD, PQ is still way ahead of the rest of the newer breeds of Full HD alternatives out there.

Besides, KURO's black levels have no equals in the market today

Harvey is selling new 508XG at RM9k. Not sure still got any left over or not.

Someone quoted can get KRP500 at RM11.9k @ KL. Let me know if someone is selling that price @ Penang.

Hi Buddy,

If you post this question on a Pioneer or Samsung thread you'll likely to get more info? whistling.gif

OK, here's the scoop,

Pioneer 500XDA (same thing as XG, kalido correct me if I'm wrong)

http://www.cnet.com.au/pioneer-pdp-508xda-339281523.htm

Samsung UN55B7000

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sam...7-33490415.html

720p vs 1080p

Here's a posting on Yahoo where a guy did some homework to compare Pioneer & Panasonic

user posted image

My answer to his dilemma would be................ seated roughly 8ft & beyond, our eyes can't differentiate btw 720p & 1080p.

In other words, you'll need to consider these 3 factors in your buying decision:

1) Screen Size
2) Viewing Distance
3) Resolution

See chart below:

yeah...i reckon the 508XDA , the 508XG and 508XD are all the same models meant for different regions.

this calculator would also be quite useful in working out viewing distances based on THX and SMPTE standards and guidelines.

and this spreadsheet is even better.... wink.gif

why compare 55" B7000 with 508XG? i believe 55" B7000 should be more than RM10k. if compare with KRP500, i will take the latter although is smaller.

Wanted to get a flat panel for my parents place so 2 days ago I undertook a mission in search of the answer to the same exact question .
And now , I'm in the LCD wagon....lol .
As a kuro owner, I strongly believe Plasma is clearly superior ( in IMHO ) but just can't rely on the current Plasma manufacturers who're just killin the plasma reputation or what's left of it after Pioneer exited the business.

Pioneer has stopped producing their Kuro plasmas? shocking.gif

I might get LCDs but 50" FHD + seems too expensive

yes, they do . I was all set to go for the 2010 50" model till I got to know bout the floating black issue. Just check out the thread here for more info.

-kytz- : Pio had just announced their collaboration with Pana for plasma and started releasing LCDs in collaboration with Sharp back in 2008/09. They had to resort to such strategic bussiness collaboration in order to emerge out of the heavily unprofitable plasma division due to bad sales and market response . Not very long after that, came the bloody financial crisis to ruin it all....thus they announced their exit out of the display business altogether. The END of the legend and the cease of genuine TV technology innovation .

But all was not bad , when the news that Pana had bought over Pio plasma tech came lurking out, fans were relieved .
And the 2010 models did seem they were worthy replacement with excellent black levels but with the floating blacks issue, the so called Panasonic Kuro remains a myth .

Guys, time is money.... if you still keep on debating on this topic, don't think you'll even find 428XG anymore rclxub.gif

Btw - what you're paying for the current price is just a mere fraction of the retail price if Pioneer had not exit the business cry.gif

I have repeatedly mentioned that stocks are running low since a month ago and they were selling like hot cakes when dealers were clearing their stock.

I have seen this coming and bought the KRP-500A in Dec even though I was fully aware that it is no longer in production! nod.gif

One forumer asked for my help to reserve a KRP-500A through my contacts. Next thing he 'Fong-Fei-Kei' hoping that the price will drop further. Too bad!

Even if you would like to pay extras now, availability remains in question.............

Better make you choice, it's now or never!

Quite possible to see some KURO elements in the next few batches of Panasonic PDPs. Not surprised if the KURO brand is retained since it is highly regarded in the industry rclxms.gif

To utilize KURO tech, Panasonic may have to build their PDP panels from the ground up, especially now the trend is moving to 3D. That's exactly what the Pioneer engineers did for every KURO generation. They'll probably need time to come up with a new processing chip as well.

If all goes well, perhaps 2011 biggrin.gif

Added on April 11, 2010, 11:33 pmBtw, if you guys are serious about getting a KURO and would like to get some tips on where to get a unit, you might want to post your question here:

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1340204

There are also few guys asking around for the nearest shop that still offers the PDP. One prond owner just bought 2 KURO units (428XG & 500A) at the same time!

I bet you'll find some help here. If you don't ask (politely), you won't get an answer tongue.gif

All registered KURO Kakis in this thread! thumbup.gif
