Hi,
I have a 55" 6 series Samsung LCD (not sure exactly what its full name is) and I've noticed a strange problem with it. When playing my PS3, if I set the picture size on the TV to 16:9, it crops off a little big of the picture on all sides. If I set the TV to stretch, it leaves a very thin black bar on either side of the picture (the PS3 is set to 1080p via a HDMI cable). The same problem occurs when I watch astro on my beyond box on 1080i. I thought that since I have a 1080p TV, and I'm using 1080 sources I would get pixel to pixel matching, and have a perfect fit. Why is it that when I set the TV to 16:9 it crops the picture?

After a bit of research, I think it may be something to do with 'overscanning' but I don't know what that is, or how to effectively turn it off.

Help will be appreciated

did you tried "Pan and Scan"?

mine using series 6 too, but is 32" and older model

i always use PS3 to watch anime and movies, most of the movies i watch is 16:10 and if the TV set to 16:9, both upper and lower part of the video will be crop, aka overscan.

so that's why now i'm using the "Pan and Scan" option and no more overscan, from what i see, if set to 16:9, the TV will be display the video in it's original respect ration, which means 16:10 will still be 16:10 but it will crop upper and lower part to become 16:9, hope i'm correct about this.

my samsung la40 b530 (full hd) also crops all sides when i connect my laptop thru hdmi (1080p). no such problems on other hdmi tvs / lcd monitors.

am i missing a step here?

stretch option makes text quite hard to read..

IIANM, the 16:9 overscans by 2.5%. To defeat overscan, u need to select Just Scan Mode (if available)

is there such setting in samsung tv?

There is an option called 'fit to screen'. This is perfect for my PS3 and DVD player, but doesn't work well with the astro byond box.

When I watch some SD channels, there are these white dots at the top of the screen, and on most of the channels theres a small black bar on all sides fo the picture. Even on the HD astro channels there are a few lines of black pixels on either the top and bottom, or the sides of the image.

Is it possible to select 16:9 for HDMI 1 (astro) and FIT TO SCREEN for other inputs?

By the way, I have a LA55B650 I believe. Its either B650 or A650. I got it in november of 2009 if it helps.

On the SD channels you are seeing the broadcast noise that is there for a purpose (not for the user more for the sat guys). I am not familiar with ur model so I am not sure if u can select different aspect ratio by channel.

Sammys does have one mode that does not overscan. I might be wrong on the naming. I recall it being something that said "Just" but am unsure. As the OP said, it "Fit to Screen".

If I set the TV to overscan, will it distort the HD channel images too?

if use fit to screen mode, pixel shift option cant be enabled. problem for samsung plasma user like me

overscan just a few pixel only.. make no different much..

OK well I managed to fix the issue. I set the astro HDMI to 16:9, which overscans the funny dots, while I set the DVD player and PS3 to FIT TO SCREEN so they display properly.

One othr thing, is it necessary to actually calibrate the TV? I have a calibration thing on one of my blu ray movies but don't know how to use it!

Mine doesn't. It has a mode called FIT TO SCREEN
