I think Wah Chan Midvalley's prices are reasonable. Recently they had quoted me the below, but I still think the deal is not attractive enough as the settings are selling have bad craftsmanship.

0.38C, 3ex, none, E color, Si1 RM3060
0.40C, 3 ex, none, E color, Si1 RM3600

I personally think that I can get a lower color grade up to H-I, clarity level I would prefer a nice Si1 that looks like VS2, which can get a huge savings from that.

Back in Aug'15, I was quoted by the HK private jeweller , unfortunately he could not hold the diamond for me when I was planning to go to HK in Nov'15. He quoted me as per below:

0.49C, 3ex, none, G color, Si1 HKD 7,400 + white gold ring HKD 2,200 = HKD 9,600 (MYR 5000) for the whole ring.

The perfect thing about this stone is it is 0.49C, which looks exactly like a 0.5C, with huge savings up to USD 500 per carat from 0.5c. Additionally the stone is table clean, and eye clean, it only has some feathers and pin points at the sides and girdle area. This is a rare Si1 0.49c, unfortunately I have no fate to get that. I am so tempted to get a 0.5c stone on my finger.

So now the jeweller has a few not-so -attractive choices available, reason being that in HK everyone will go for 1 carat when it comes to engagement ring:
0.40C, 3 ex, none, E color, VS2 HKD 6,900
0.43C 3 ex, none, I color, VS2 HKD 5,700

I'll be going to HK in Nov to choose one of the stones if they're still available.. whoo hooo!!!

Got my ring from one of the famous diamond wholesaler from Hong Kong.
0.5 carat F Si1 3ex Non Florescent for HKd 10,900.

The Si1 there is gorgeous, at least it looks like VS1 to me under the 10x magnifier unlike those poor qualities stone that i have spotted in Wah Chan where you can see feathers and clouds all over.

Though I forgot to check the crown and pavillion angles which are a bit out from Jannpaul's marketing gimmick ideal cut, the diamond appears to be very shinny and I hardly spot the difference in the brilliance between an ideal cut diamond with my diamond (I think probably you need a very good pair of eyes and my diamond is small therefore has not much impact). I was too concentrating to compare the fire under the fluorescence light between 4 stones that he picked for me. The best thing is if you buy a diamond from the wholesaler they would not mark-up the price for an ideal cut because the price is determined by the specs in the GIA cert. Therefore feel free to pick by looking at the proportions yourself!

The international price for 0.5 carat F Si1 3ex None is USD 3100 per carat however after the conversion to HKD, he sold to me at HKD 8700. My 4 prongs setting is HKD 2,200. The heart shaped prongs enhanced the size of the stone.

Finally my diamond hunting journey of 1 year has came to the end.

engagement ring or marriage ring?

I only have one ring for everyday wear. I see no point of getting those wedding band that I don't love at all.

In order to create surprises, you can buy the ring first after that go to the retailer to resize. Another recommended method is to use a dummy ring to propose first after that you can bring her along to choose for her dream engagement ring.

About myself, my bf let me choose for my own ring from the very beginning given a budget of 5k to get a 0.4+carat diamond. However in the end we ended up over- budgeted for about RM 1.1k due to the recent currency depreciation ( I bought my ring from Hong Kong). I've got a 0.5 carat instead it looks bigger and the price difference is merely 1000 HKD. Prior to that I did a lot of homework from research on the diamond selection, my reliable jeweller and my preferred setting that makes me more appreciate and understand my own unique ring. Of course this would ruin all of the surprises ( I'm still wondering how he'll propose to me), in return I got to choose what I want to wear for the coming years, instead him getting me something that I don't like. Hehe I'm kinda fussy.
