Maybe he don't do Galvanized. Proper galvanized metal, it can last long for welded portion need to use good primer + paint (or even some paint now are very good to protect rust) will do.

You can do powder coating and oven. The powder paint very hard, thick and strong bond.

Powder coating is more for the aesthetic while galvanising is corrosion protection. Both function differently smile.gif

FAQ Galvanized

1. How does galvanizing protect steel from corrosion?

Zinc metal used in the galvanizing process provides an impervious barrier between the steel substrate and corrosive elements in the atmosphere. It does not allow moisture and corrosive chlorides and sulfides to attack the steel. Zinc is more importantly anodic to steel – meaning it will corrode before the steel, until the zinc is entirely consumed.

4. How long can I expect my galvanized steel project to last in service?

Hot-dip galvanized steel resists corrosion in numerous environments extremely well. It is not uncommon for galvanized steel to last more than 70 years under certain conditions. To get a good idea of how long your project will last, see the service-life chart.

Not just aesthetic. Powder coating do protect from corrosion. If you notice those factory electrical box or db box, the box is coat with this. You can't scratch it off easily.

Been trying to put what I read into practice, but my contractor seems like a little clueless when I asked him on:

1. Powder coated mild-steel price. He said normal (non-powder coated) = RM10/sqft. Powder coat must send to factory - must check back price. Anyone know what is the price range like?
2. Sleeve anchor. He said he use wall plug (plastic) and screws only.
3. Weld nut after fasten on sleeve anchor. That won't damage powder coating at the bracket?
4. 1.2 mm vs 1.6 mm. Dunno about 1.6 mm. Regular one 1.2 mm only. Anyone have 1.6 mm thick grille?

1. Think is only extra RM 1 or RM 2 only.

2. Yup, normally use wall plug and screw down, than weld and grind off the top. Than paint. Only door they use sleeve anchors, than cut and weld after secure.

3. It won't cause usually the grill have extended ear, and the nut are bolt on the ear.

4. I think you need 2" or maybe 2.5" steel to get 1.6mm. Mine 1" is also 1.2mm maybe 1.1mm not too sure.

1. Powder coated mild-steel price.  He said normal (non-powder coated) = RM10/sqft.  Powder coat must send to factory - must check back price.  Anyone know what is the price range like? Powder coating is done by specialist. Not every grill fabricator will have that.
2. Sleeve anchor.  He said he use wall plug (plastic) and screws only. Also OK la... if you are fixing the grille on the inside. Just try to cover up the screw so that it would be difficult for anyone to unfasten them.
3. Weld nut after fasten on sleeve anchor.  That won't damage powder coating at the bracket? Could always protect the rest of the parts during welding
4. 1.2 mm vs 1.6 mm.  Dunno about 1.6 mm.  Regular one 1.2 mm only.  Anyone have 1.6 mm thick grille? Price will be dependent on the material thickness. Reckon, for window grille, 1.2mm should be more than sufficient

If your concern in on the padlock's abrasion onto the painted/ powder coated surface, why don't you install a mortice lock instead of the padlock. Thus no moving padlock when the gate swings.

Do you mean that you do not intend to lock the small door or what? Don't understand.

Check out the available lock set that suits your requirement. There are some that needs the key to lock, etc...

Sorry. I meant most of time I will in / out from the small door instead of through AutoGate except night time lol. hence will need to ensure the lock area will not get rush if I didn;t do galvanize or powder coated.
I will talk to the contract maybe could in place stainless steel ear lock brows.gif

I'll advice if you want powder coat, get common color so is easier to patch by normal paint. I am using normal matt black powder coat internal, external is galvanized + paint over it using same color.
